Prospect Info: Caps Prospects General Discussion Thread - 2024-25

He wouldn't be replacing Ovi. He'd be in place of Sandin/Chychrun/Carlson. They'll keep a right shot for the Ovi spot. Hutson is LH. And again, he would be hoping to earn PP1 time by playing well on PP2 to start.

In my head, in the 2026-2027 season to start:
PP1 - Leonard/Wilson/Chychrun/Dubois/Strome
PP2 - Miro/Carlson/Hutson/Protas/McMichael

(I think Carlson re-signs. If Ovi re-signs, move Wilson or Leonard to PP2 and take Miro off.)

ETA: maybe Cristall over Protas/McMichael?
To me the answer to having all these LD is to flip the alignment, have Chychrun play the Ovy role except at RD and have Hutson or Sandin at LD feeding him. If you put Lenny in the Ovy role it takes him further away from the net, while Chychrun has established he can score 20 from the blue line.

Oooh, I like that idea. But Chychrun is usually scoring like that with a wrist/snap shot. I think you want someone who can one-time the slapshot. Maybe Carlson?

ETA: Chrychrun's stats for the slapshot are solid, so he might work there.

As someone who loves thinking about theoretical questions, the idea that we should trade Hutson now because he will 'demand' PP1 time two seasons from now is a bridge way too far. If Hutson is that good, he will earn PP1 time via his play, just as Chychrun has taken time away from others this year. He doesn't need to be 'gifted' anything, and the team should certainly not trade him because of a future 'what if' scenario.

Edit to add: If Hutson wants to 'pick his team' so he can run PP1 from day one, then he will also have to wait two additional years, assuming he spends 25-26 at BU, before he becomes unrestricted. I don't see that happening. It's not like he can just refuse to sign next year and then sign with someone else.

Two goals for Reschny against Spokane in G1 so far (Spokane down 0-2). Victoria '26-eligible RD Verhoeff is going to be a really good one.

Is all of this conjecture grounded in any reality? Or is this all suppostion on your part?

The PP lineup is based on the current PP lineup with a few substitutions. But really I expect them to completely re work the PP once Ovi's gone, so it could be very, very different.

No, not that. Your assertion that Hutson is going to demand PP1 time, or want out.

I think that’s bunk. 18yr old kids don’t have the right to “demand” anything.

So let’s start over, with that part, yes?

I think Cole is going to at least expect to start off on PP2 with an opportunity to earn his way into PP1 time in 26-27. His older brother was in PP2 to start off the season for the Habs before his play forced the coach to move him to PP1. He's got the insane compete level to one up his brother and gun for a Calder himself.

NCAA prospects do have the leverage for these demands. There's sizeable NIL money available for elite players nowadays who can stay in college and sign with whatever team they want after reaching free agency.

I wrote said he's going to want a path to PP1 time. Which is a very different thing then being handed PP1 time. A path could be Hutson starting on PP2 (in the fall of 2026, not next spring).

For example, if he signed with the Canucks, there would be no path to PP1 time. They have Hughes. I suppose there's a chance Hutson could eventually surpass Hughes, but it won't happen for years. But Chychrun isn't on Hughes' level. So there remains a path on the Caps, but a narrower one than before they signed Chychrun.

Why do I think this? Because of what their father has said about wanting their sons to be on team's that were a good fit. He's said (and Cole has said) he didn't want Cole and Lane on the same team, because they play the same role, and they can't both play that role at the same time. I'm trying to find the source of the quote that said Lane was willing to wait if it wasn't a good fit (and I may wait a month or two, because the best choice would be to ask Habs fans, and that's just messy right now given the potential playoff series. But if I can't find it, I'll ask after the playoffs have been over for a while.) It's also based on Cole saying the Caps were his top choice. Cole doesn't BS. So assuming he meant it, why? Now the Caps are a top notch organization and he's close with Leonard. But mainly, they lack a future 1D in the system. Carlson is still it. So there would be an opening for Hutson and he knew it. Now with Chyrchun, there's less of an opening.

I could be completely wrong. And if I had to bet, I'd bet he signs with the Caps. But I never worried about Leonard or Chesley signing -- you can look at my post history. I do think there's a very small but non-zero chance with Cole.

But what I really mean with my post is that Cole is ridiculously good, and that I'm excited that Caps have him, and it would be perfectly reasonable to treat him next season like they're treating Leonard this season: as a future star for this organization. For example, Leonard got B bonuses that are basically never given to an 8th overall pick; they can and should do comparable stuff for Cole next year if needed, because he's a special player IMO. I wrote that post because I was so excited about how good he looked in the NCAA playoffs.

Clearly, I did a terrible job of articulating that.

He’s got to wait 3 years to gain that leverage. Thats not really leverage at all. Is it a small threat? Sure. But that’s it.

It way overblown. Waaayyyy

Ok, got it. I agree with you on some of this. He should get the Leonard treatment. 100 %
