Total horror. We already have 1 guy whose defensive flaws and physical (or mental in the case of Kuzy) compromises have to be covered up by the other 4 skaters on the ice. We used to have 4 compromised guys in our top 6! The hockey that was played was unwatchable. It’s fine having to cover for Ovi’s defensive shortcomings because he’s about to become the greatest goal scorer ever - but Malkin (who is actually more immobile than Ovi most of the time) does not offer such an appealing offset.

Some additional NCAA prospect notes:

Chase Clark and AIC start their conference tournament today as the 8th seed. They play top seed Holy Cross in a best of 3. It is likely that Clark's season ends this weekend, which would be the completion of his 3rd year playing NCAA hockey. I don't think he's good enough to sign, given the number of goalies the org is already juggling in Hershey and SC, but I guess you never know what can happen.

Joaquim Lemay and Northeastern start their conference tournament next Wednesday (the 12th). They are currently the 9th seed and likely to play Merrimack as the 8th seed in a single elimination game. It's possible that Lemay's season ends on Wednesday as Northeastern isn't good enough to make the full NCAA tournament unless they win the conference. This is the completion of his 3rd year playing NCAA hockey.

The Big Ten tournament starts today, with Notre Dame (Nicholas Kempf) as the 7th seed playing Minnesota (Chesley) as the 2nd seed in a best of 3. It's likely that Kempf's season ends this weekend. This is the completion of Kempf's 1st year playing NCAA hockey. Minnesota is ranked 3rd in the country per USCHO, so are assured of a spot in the full NCAA tournament no matter how their conference tournament goes.

Also playing in the Big Ten tournament with games starting today is Ohio State (Brent Johnson) as the 3rd seed playing Wisconsin as the 6th seed. Again, it's a best of 3. Ohio State is ranked 9th overall by USCHO, so they stand a good chance of getting an NCAA tournament bid even if they don't win the Big Ten.

Michigan State, with David Gucciardi, is the top seed in the Big Ten, and received a bye to the single elimination semifinals. They're second in the country per USCHO, so are assured of a spot in the full tournament. This is the completion of Gucciardi's 4th year playing NCAA.

BC (Leonard) and BU (Hutson) are currently the numbers 1 and 3 teams in Hockey East rankings, and will likely get byes to the quarterfinal games, starting next Saturday, March 15. Both teams would likely get bids in the full NCAA tournament regardless of how their conference championships end.

The NCAA tournament selections are on Sunday, March 23. Four regional tournaments with single elimination games run from March 27 through 30. And the Frozen Four will occur April 10 through 12.

Quoting from a different thread

Edit: Cristall at 2+3. 1st in scoring

Parascak with 1+1.

Baby Protas: 3 apples. 4th in scoring

Patrick Thomas leading the OHL in assists at 73.

I really wonder what the plan with Thomas is. He'll need to be signed by June 1 and of course the Caps have a players-under-contract crunch. He's got great numbers but I have no idea how much those numbers are influenced by the guys he plays with. The last 4 games he has centered Nick Lardis (Blackhawks 3rd rounder in 2023, averages more than a goal per game) and Cole Brown (Devils 6th rounder in 2023, averages 0.5 gpg). I haven't watched him anywhere near enough to guage his skill for professional potential.

Maybe just an AHL deal? Or maybe they trade his rights to somoene who's willing to take a flier on him.

Maybe they trade his rights and Suzdalev to Chicago, so they can play with Lardis and Bedard (Suz's old Regina linemate) respectively. :wg:

Following up my previous ... NCAA prospects who played in their conference tournaments last night:

Clark backstopped AIC to an upset win over Holy Cross in game 1 of their best of 3 series last night. Game 2 is tonight at 1900, the series is best of 3. Clark allowed 2 goals, saving 34 of 36 Holy Cross shots.

Notre Dame also upset Minnesota in game 1 of their best of 3 series last night. Kempf didn't play. Game 2 is tonight at 2100. Kempf has been the backup this season, it wouldn't shock me if he starts in net. No points for Chesley in the game for Minnesota, he was a -2.

Ohio State was upset by Wisconsin 4-1. (Relatively minor upset.) Brent Johnson scored the only goal for Ohio State, even strength in the 3rd period. Game 2 is tonight at 1900.

They do for this season but signing him to an ELC won't start until '25-26 so it's no problem. I would think he's done enough to earn an NHL contract, though it's tough to envision both him and Ilya Protas playing center in Hershey next season. Thomas could start in the ECHL first and I don't doubt Ilya starts on the wing either way (assuming he makes the jump).

It'll be very interesting who joins and plays for Hershey when their seasons are over. Seems like Hershey isn't quite as stacked as usual, even if a few guys are sidelined by injury currently.

I was actually under the impression (mistakenly probably) that signing the contract counts towards the 50, regardless of when it starts, until or unless it slides. But I have no idea why I thought that. I'd defer to your experience on the subject.

I think they can sign him to a PTO/ATO in Hershey for the spring, and that wouldn't count to the 50.

Went to talk a Quick Look at contract situation. Right now we have 47 contracts so can sign up Leonard for this year and maybe even Chesley.

Caps have 9 pending UFA’s on the active roster plus Alexeyev (RFA) plus Ethan Bear (Hershey). 7 more veteran UFA’s in Hershey including Sgarbosa, Smallman, Limoges, Sutter, Shepherd, Priskie, and Philp. Some of these guys will go too.

So out of those 18 I suspect 5 to 7 will be resigned so we should have plenty of room for contracts next year. And space for this year to add three.
