Prospect Info: Caps Prospects General Discussion Thread - 2024-25

I think it's Ross Mahoney who deserves the lion share of the credit for the prospect pool. And he's been here longer than BMac.

(I am very interested to know what happened the first few years of GMBM's tenure. The Caps were great at drafting pre-2014. They've been great recently. But there were those below-average years in the middle, especially right after GMBM took over. Why?)
Maybe the WHL had a down stretch; whether they're drafting well or poorly under Mahoney is dictated by the WHL guys

my memory says that we used to make a lot of picks "off the board", goalies and obscure euros ... whereas in recent years, we have gone for the universally acknowledged bpa and faller's with upside, likely back as far as Lappy and although they haven't proven anything as yet Cristall and Hutson and even Cam Allen kinda

I guess Parascak was a bit out there, but we'll see

this coincides with our march up the prospect pool rankings also ?

Also Wendy Marco who enables the strategy of picking prospects who are great at everything but skating.
Had the same thought watching that highlight of Protas blasting past Barrie like he was standing still. Wilson was another who improved his skating immensely thanks to the Capitals development staff. It's a major edge to be able to draft talented prospects that other teams pass on for skating-related concerns.

There are a lot of pieces. Amateur scotting, pro scouts, skating and skills coaching. Caps have their type. They go after it. They also made bets that were good moves on paper and didn’t play out like Mantha. It’s nice to see that crew getting rewarded with prospects progressing.

One of the reasons that they are in first place, is that all of their bets are paying off. The question is, how much is luck and how much is strategic planning coming to fruition?
