I mean you can be big time and still generate points if you are that kind of talent. Justin Williams and Dave Bolland were great in big games, they still were just Justin Williams and Dave Bolland. With Leonard, It's not even NHL hockey right now. All the guys from college who ever were considered "those guys" in the NHL have been able to produce on every level.

So, I'm sorry but I don't buy the excuses. The man is game when the puck drops, no question but for that much hype and draft pedigree? This is not enough. Yet.
He's not that player. (Yet.) It's like asking why doesn't Carlson have the offensive output of Karlsson. If Leonard were that player, he wouldn't have fallen to 8th.

He's not going to come in and be a star offensively (in the regular season). I think he could get there eventually, but I do not expect him to put up huge point totals in his first season.

Leonard's value to the Caps is 1) he could immediately put up solid (think Vrana-esque) offensive numbers while also being solid off the puck and 2) he has significant long-term offensive potential.

I mean Hutson fell to whatever that number is and giving the same output while being a D. Johnny Hockey tore NCAA apart in his days. Plenty of examples of people delivering. 8th overall is more than high enough to be expected to be in the upper echelon offensively all year long. Otherwise, yeah, it's just a hope that he's gonna be somehow more impactful in the NHL than as an amateur.

I think Hutson producing so much compared to Leonard is more a credit to Hutson and how good he is than an indictment of Leonard's production. It's silly that Hutson dropped as far as he did in the draft.
I think if anyone has known the rookie season his brother was going to have he goes at least somewhere in the 20s. Now, every other GM is the league who had a pick outside of the top 10 and didn't pick him is probably kicking themselves after the WJC.

Schedule for the week:

Hershey - Fri 1/17, Sun 1/19

CHL:
Andrew Cristall Spokane - Wed 1/15, Fri 1/17 PG, Sat 1/18

Terik Parascak Prince George - Fri 1/17 Spokane, Sat 1/18

Patrick Thomas Brantford - Fri 1/17, Sat 1/18, Sun 1/19

Ilya Protas Windsor - Thu 1/16, Sat 1/18, Sun 1/19

Cam Allen London - Fri 1/17, Sun 1/19

Eriks Mateiko Rimouski - Wed 1/15, Fri 1/17, Sun 1/19

College:
Ryan Leonard BC - Tue 1/14, Fri 1/17, Sat 1/18

Ryan Chesley Minn - Fri 1/17, Sat 1/18

Cole Hutson BU - Fri 1/17, Sat 1/18

In something of a thin draft I start earmarking some of the larger humans available (that can also play mind you). Windsor center Jack Nesbitt seems like an intriguing late first possibility. He's ranked 16th among NA skaters, quite a bit higher than anywhere else I've seen. Fiddler likely won't be available to them but certainly fits as well. William Horcoff has accelerated to Michigan to solid early returns. I'm all for assembling a small army of Protas-like (Protean?) creatures.

Looks like Cristall is the WHL points leaders at 70.

Actually at 71 points in 31 games. 31 goals in 31 games too.

Players behind him:

Kyle Chyzowski - 69 points in 42 games.
Oliver Tulk - 66 points in 39 games.
Gavin McKenna - 66 points in 33 games.
Benjamin Kindel - 64 points in 38 games (2025 draft-eligible).

Tied for 3rd in WHL in SHG's so will be interesting to see if he gets PK duties again in Spokane.

The WJC was so enjoyable this year... who are we most excited for at this point? I think my list is something like:

Leonard
Tie- Hutson/Cristall
Tie- Mateiko/Lil Pro
Parascak
Allen
Iorio
Chesley
Muggli
Sikora
Tie - Suzdalev/Funk

I really hope Miro can find the next gear and become a regular middle six player too, love his game.

For me (and this is about excitement and not a prospect ranking although there is some correlation):
Leonard
Cristall (love Hutson, but Cristall brings creativity to the forwards which is currently very lacking; also, he might be able to score in the shootout)
Hutson
***massive gap***
Lil Pro
Chesley
Allen
Rybinski (I want to see him get NHL minutes next season at the latest)
Mateiko
Muggli
Sikora
Parascak
Iorio

I really love the progression Chesley and Allen showed this year. I think it's going to be very interesting to compare Allen's 5v5 numbers to that of his new teammate DIckinson. And I'm curious to see what Mateiko's numbers look like on his new team.

I've never been super enthused by the Parascak pick. I think he's a good prospect, but I am personally not yet excited about him.

(I did not include Miro in the list. He'd probably be after Hutson but before the massive gap.)

Pretty solid rankings. Flip Aitcheson and Frondell and I wouldn't quibble with much. Mrtka should be higher, though. Cootes seems like their sort of pick...already captaining a poor team and leading them in scoring. Maybe not a HR swing but solid. Once you get to the early 20's it's wide open. I find myself preferring a lot of his early second rounders to his late firsts.

NHLN has the All-American Prospects game tonight.
