Jason DOING!

One half of the gruesome twosome, the other being joel kiwicowpie.

ahhh....such fond memories of watching those two patrol the back end with aplomb.

Wait a minute....was Ivan the horrible the “best player not in the nhl” - according to makfi - or was it the other sykora he let fly with that gem?

There's an entire thread in nightmare former player flashbacks. Like

Who knew that George was right when he kept the better 2012 drafted forward after trading Forsberg?

The only thing about that trade that bothered me was the return. I think if you asked him in the past, Ross Mahoney would have told you Wilson was the bigger deal.

That would make for an interesting poll on the mains. Forsberg or Wilson

Most won’t pick Wilson. He’s too “hated” to garner that much positive recognition.

Today, I wouldn’t trade Wilson straight up for Forsberg. Sure, Wilson probably won’t ever match the straight up points production, but we all know that is only part of the story.

Top Line Tom should settle into a 50-60pt winger (25-30G) and inevitable captain. Add in his ferociousness, and he’s second to none in the intimidation and overall impact factor for someone his size.

We've rehashed ancient history a million times and I don't want to do it again so this is the last I'll say on it but yeah, the return was abhorrent as was the motivation behind it. If they had moved FF for a young defenseman of equal caliber it would have been much more palatable and understandable. And they did it, of course, to squeak into the playoffs to save George's job, not because Martin Erat was the missing piece on a title contender, which is the part that really rubbed me the wrong way.

And the mains will never acknowledge the value that Wilson provides. The hivemind thinks it's more fun to label him a dirty, talentless goon whose only contributions are headshots meanwhile we know he's an all-situations player who has already provided Marcus Johansson-level production on the stat sheet while being a force of nature on the ice, with room to grow. He's a future captain here and hopefully will wear a Caps sweater for 15 years.

Last season Wilson had 35 evp and Forsberg had 34. Given the difference in power play status evp is a fair comparison. They both had 21 goals as well. Given that Forsberg is a primary scorer and Wilson secondary, thats + Wilson.

Meanwhile Forsberg is a right shot left wing. He would never be a 1LW in Washington or the first shooting option on the pp. I suppose he could have played right wing and kept Oshie off the team. Not sure that is a good trade. Given the available role would Forsberg be better than Vrana?

I think i read or see from somewhere that they actually wanted to draft Willy at 12th, but ended up risking it when Forsberg dropped to them (and Wilson was seen a bit of reach at 16th anyways). When that trade went through Willy was never on the table because they have always loved the guy and the character on our scouting pool.

Could be im making things up too, but ive just been so high on Willy the minute his name was called, and so happy to see him flourishing to his full potential.

I always understood why the notorious trade happened. It just was for the wrong guy. Hindsight. Erat could have been the 50+p two way guy for us that they hoped they traded for and it would look so different. Latta could have also worked out better, heart and soul guy. But we had been begging for an all in trade for a long time, and McPhee was getting short of robe. Something was on its way anyways. We could have lost worse, like Kuzy or Willy or Carlson or some other of the younger guys.

We know that how the referees call games is set by the league office. Come playoffs they direct the referees to call it tight or let em play. Calling it tight was an advantage to the pp elite Caps. For whatever reason Caps series seemed to lean heavily toward let em play. My feeling has always been that the Caps made a priority of Wilson because let em play hockey was made for him. If his game forced the league to call it tight, that brought the Caps power play back to the fore.

I am probably over thinking it

I think the league in general had come up with a new formation to use against the Caps that worked well. To me its pretty clear.
PKs would put a man on Ovechkin and take him out of the play. The other 3 would both stand in Carlson's shoot lane and pack down on Oshie. They are giving Backstrom or Kuzy(whoever is on the half wall the shot. I saw times last season where Backstrom could skate in to the bottom of the right wing circle before anyone would challenge him.

Puck movement doesnt effect that pk because the players are mostly stationary save for shooting lanes. Backstrom and Kuzy are going to have to find a way to score or Kuzy is going to come off pp1 so they can add Tom Wilson. They then have 2 guys in front and Wilson creating chaos.

This happened with Backs goal against the Pens no? Kuzy to Backs in close

His speed is what really sets him apart as a total unicorn IMO. Lucic was always used as a hopeful comparison when Tom was a prospect but Lucic never had anything close to this kind of skating and defensive play.

I’m only in my mid-20s but I really can’t think of a player I’ve ever seen to compare this version of Wilson to.

He's what people thought Evgeni Artyukhin might be if science could have grown a brain in his head.

I'm not sure there's a non-hypothetical example to give though.

Hey, I have a sweet fresh idea. As long as Vrana-Kuznetsov-Sprong is an all offensive domination overkill freak of a line. Why don't we take this best line we have as it is plus Ovy and John and run it as our PP1?

So VV stunk against the Pens. His rebound control was not good at all. Next game(Friday) I think Lavi will go back to Samsonov. Going forward, if Samsonov/Vanecek continue to be inconsistent, Lavi will have to consider going to Craig Anderson, who has the playing experience. I seriously think as a worst case scenario, you call up Anderson, you send Samsonov to the Taxi Squad(only goalie you can do it with because he's still on his entry level contract) and Vanecek backs up Anderson.

Possibly because it leaves the team's single best PP player on the bench in favor of... Sprong?

I don't think Lavi or fans should overreact. It's early in the season, early in careers, early in coaching tenures, and most importantly scoring around the league is WAY up so far. With the condensed schedule and playing the same teams more often you'll probably see a lot less defensive rigor and a lot more goals, at least until everyone gets sick of it and starts trapping.
