Didn’t we take JW for some crazy playoff stat he had? Just saying.... I hope he becomes a pk stud and pest for Pitt/Tb/cbj or whoever we play
Mr. Game 7.

We didn't take him for that, but his reputation was that he was clutch in G7. He was 7-0 in G7 with 7 goals and 7 assists.

This is a good trade. I didn't like the idea of acquiring Hagelin if it meant Jaskin was going the other way, but a 3rd + a conditional 6th for a 50% retained Hagelin is a perfectly reasonable price to pay for a guy who will hopefully be a boon to ES team defense and PKing.

He seems like he'd also be capable of filling in for Vrana or Burakovsky in lead-protecting situations late in the game as well, or being able to slot in on the third line in case of injury. I don't think any of the other 4th line forwards on the team are really capable of these things.

I hate when there are two threads about basically the same thing.

You would appreciate this thread if you were offline all day, and came to HF expecting to see breaking news in a new thread, vs likely reading hundreds of posts since your last visit, to find out what is really, headline news.

I almost said to lock the thread to keep discussion in one, but then it would be bumped and dumped and not seen.... maybe lock and sticky for a few days is a nice courtesy to fellow caps fans.

Bah...Have your cake and eat it too. Get Hagelin. Stir the pot. DSP knows that he doesn't need to move. He gets 6 weeks of conditioning at Hershey to prepare for the playoffs. The players that are upset are reminded of what it takes and encouraged that DSP is not gone.

I don't think this was the original plan as Jaskin was on waivers. But come playoffs, I think DSP is going to play

discord in the room is not great, but yeah, best possible outcome as regards DSP, I guess.

DSP was a good guy but didn' do much over regular season. Would be willing to gamble with Hagelin playing the back lines. Maybe he can do more. And it's not like he hasn't performed in the playoffs either.

I am cautiously optimistic about this. I want to see what happens first. Plus I tend to trust what Brian is doing with this team. The only blemish you can really list on him during the trade deadline was the deal for Shattenkirk. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This the same guy who traded for Kempny last year. And that worked out well.

No, no, no, no no.

Look people, I ate a shit ton of really satisfying crow for doubting GMBM last year but his deadlines have sucked outside Kempny. Granted, that one move makes up for all the others - and I’m totally on board with that - but let’s not pretend like Brian’s been some sort of deadline savant. It was a major weakness of his going into last year....

I’ve come around since assessing his defensive numbers. They are damn elite numbers.

First thing that stands out to me is his ability to cover the point and kucherov spot on the PP.
He creates 7% better offensive with a lot of that coming from net front offense and even better, is 16% better than the league average defensively, again primarily around the front of the net.

Draws a lot of penalties but struggles to shoot well. Which is fine and just give him some one on one time with Ovi ;)

Here is Eller for comparison...

Hags is much better from a numbers perspective and he has an elite skill in his speed. At 50% retained and for a 3rd, Classic GMBM move to support the core with moveable low cost pieces.

I don't like it. Soft euro players are really not what Caps need. Mojo was soft stone hands player and caps sucked with him. We don't need more of that.

Should have traded for Kreider not Hagelin.

Most deadline deals aren't winners. Most teams that make deadline deals don't win.

1st TDL. Glencross. He scored what should have been the only goal of a clincher to put the Caps in the 3rd round.
2nd: Weber. A backup body
3rd: Shattenkirk considered a coup
4th: Kempny which nobody liked.

I don't think his deadlines have been bad

Hagelin isn't soft. I think he's declined quite a bit but he's never been soft. He'd been a relentless forechecker his entire career. Question his scoring touch all you like, but the effort is always there.

I don’t hate it. Only this year and hits the check marks on defense and PK. Any offense is a plus. Great time to rebound after getting bounced from a league bottom team and another team scraping into the playoffs atm.

Are you seriously telling me Glencross was a good pick up?

Weber should never have touched the ice on a contender. He sucked ass at that stage of his career.

And Shatty had the heart of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz before his trip down the Yellow Brick Road. He stunk for us AND he cost us a first. You can’t hide behind the notion that people liked the move at the time. It didn’t work out...plain and simple.

Yes, Kempny was a very solid find and the rest is history.

Sorry, that’s not a sterling record. Now, if Hagelin and whoever else he adds pan out and we go on another run after looking shaky mid-season then, yes, we can all say that Big Mac has turned into a deadline wizard.

He’s simply not there yet...

It’s not really realistic to be a ‘deadline wizard’. You are overpaying to try and win a Cup generally speaking and only 1 team can win....

Yeah but there’s a big difference in adding pieces that contribute and adding pieces that play like Glencross and Weber did.

Those guys HURT our chances.
