You can retain some of your core while you rebuild. You get rid of Karlsson because he's older but they could have maintained Meier.

But the reason they didn't maintain him is because they knew he wasn't good long term.

They didn't maintain Meier because they already have enough shit contracts. Meier, in theory, will probably fall off later in his contract but it made no sense a rebuilder like SJS to give him that contract. I don't even think Timo has been that much of an issue this year. It's the goaltending + coaching + death by injuries. They also can't generate anything 5v5 for their lives depended on it
