Yelling doesn't work as a coach. These are grown men. They'll either work or they won't. Shaming them might help, for a time, but at the end of the day you need a leadership group of players who can motivate and instill a losing-is-unacceptable mentality.

How you do it is simple. You don't party after a loss. You don't go and have fun. You are so devastated that you go back and think about everything that went wrong. Winning becomes an addiction, your only reward. You only let yourself enjoy things when you are winning.

Nice post, I like. I feel you need a rather vocal and forceful leadership group to do that. I don't think Cally has ever been that.

Or just enough people who share that philosophy. I hated losing, such that I was almost impossible to be around when the team lost more than 1 in a row. Cost me relationships, friends, ect.

These guys are pros making a lot of money, so sometimes its tough to keep competitive.

I had flashbacks to 2nd era Messier, McCarthy, and Rumun Ndur. What a crappy, crappy game. No one gives a damn. Not a single player. Until that changes, we will be at .500 or below.

Since the nature of this sport is based around both team, and individual performance (points), the drill instructor approach is actually a very effecient "snap out" tool.

While singling out individual players in the locker room will have a undesired effect (unfair bias), taking a angry approach towards the entire team is useful to spark the all-for-one mentality that you're genuinely dependant upon in such a physical sport.

It's a short term solution however, since eventually the negative feedback will start to deteriorate the morale instead of boosting it.

You find the same example in coaches who are brough in to save clubs in various sports, they are often angry and take aggressive approaches towards the team, with often immediate success. However after a while, relationships suffer.

Torts is a perfect example of this. He's a great guy to inspire thoughness, but the team will hate him with a passion if too much time passes.

I always felt the same way, very competitive. It's something you are born with in my opinion. You can't teach someone that feeling when they fail or lose. They need a team of people with that mindset. You would think a majority of professional sports stars would have it, but I'm not sure that is the case.

A 4-1 loss at home, once again letting a rookie get the best of them, and Benoit Pouliot scored the only goal. Can't get any worse than that.

Best part of the game was hearing The Stone Roses played after the fourth goal.

Seriously, another predictable "It's some ECHL goalie 5th on the depth chart and he's gonna be Terry Sawchuck against the Rangers" I've seen this script for the last 15 years.

No passion.

I'm going back to not watching again on Tuesday night.

Jabroni: The Dark Ages were painful beyond belief. It's not that bad yet. The East Coast specifically NY is pretty brutal during Dec-Mar and having a bad hockey team and something not to carry you through the tough months made winters very long.

Who the hell posted the "I'm disgusted with this team" thread?

It's bad enough that the team played that poorly, you have to **** up the rewind for those of us who recorded to watch later? I thought there was a rule about NO SPOILER TITLES SAME DAY AS THE GAME?

If that was what the dark ages looked like, I give a lot of credit to the fans for sticking with the team.

Literally seven straight seasons of games just like this one. No chemistry, no heart, lots of talk. The worst stretch of failure by a team that's known how to do nothing but lose for almost 90 years.

Christ! I just bought 2 games of tix because I wanted to see the new Garden and hit them in Philly. 400 bills down the drain

That's a bummer. It used to be you just had to buy tix two games after a win, then go every other game to avoid the losses. Last night's OTL threw a wrench in that.

You should be happy he saved you the misery... At least you were prepared to see that ****show.

When the only guys who have any kind of grit and fight are Nash, Kreider, and Zuccarello, you're not going to get very far.

Glad to see that Vigneault's up-tempo offense has untied the shackles of the previous administration.

It has allowed this group of offensive dynamos to shine brightly.

Goddamnit, I wish I was paying more attention.

Yeah the dark ages were way worse than this. With way worse players too. Can't compare the two, but after all that ******** and now I'm a grown man (debatable) and just start to get a taste of success for them to let me down. I can understand why people are frustrated.

We will turn it around though, this year, next year, sometime soon. This team has the components for success I think at this point it's just time to make a move or two.
