as i posted in the FA Frenzy thread, I love to bash benning as much as the next guy but c'mon, considering the alternatives, this is surprisingly one of benning's better moves.

we all knew he was going to blow a good chunk of cap space, so it's only a matter of picking your poison...at least he got the right player for our team.

The 6M is a lot, but looking at what everyone else is signing for it was obviously the going rate for top FA this year.

I would have liked Kyle Okposo more, but this is way better than signing Luck for 7 years.

Eriksson is a highly skilled, low maintenance player. I would have preferred a natural RW. He will likely have to be bought out or retire towards the latef years of his contract, but term is what all of the UFAs are looking for.

LOL hilarious how many people love this contract.

This will be a bad contract before the end of this upcoming season. Oh well. Kinda expected this idiot GM to leave someone else with a bad contract before he left (in addition to Sutter). Guess we have our answer.

No alot of people actually like this contract.
Is just that most of us accept the fact that we're landing a big FA, now consider the FA market this season. This deal isn't really bad, it's just meh

Yup.

Yup.

Yup.

If this was 2011, I'd be calling it an excellent signing. Get a good player for a couple years when the team is contending, then pay for it on the flipside.

For a 28th place team? This contract is stupid. And will be an albatross.

If it were 2011 we'd be trolling the bargain bin looking for the next moneypuck signing.

This is another top 6 forward Benning has brought in. Good on him.

I can't believe Eriksson was happy to sign with one of the worst hockey teams in the NHL. He's here for the money, and because Jim ****in Benning was the only one stupid enough to give him SIX ****ing years!

Nope, but I think it's guaranteed he gets a full NTC for the first few years. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a NMC for the entire contract as well.
I would think he would have a full for 2 yrs and then a limited NT so he can get outta dodge if the Sedins retire.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:
He's here mostly because of the Sedins.
He could have get a long term deal elsewhere, maybe just a bit less money

Don't mind the contract itself - to me Eriksson is a player that will age relatively well, and seems like a great character guy to have around the younger guys. $6M is a lot, but the cap will go up, and you have to pay to win the bidding for a UFA.

With that said, not a fan of the overall direction. What is the goal here... Rebuild, contend for cup, both at the same time? History has shown its nearly impossible to accomplish both simultaneously.

Lol you are pretty naive if you think the Canucks were the only team to offer him 6 years

Yeah and seeing as Boston basically gave Backes the same money with one year less term I wonder if Loui really wanted to stick around in Beantown that badly.

It's not a steal of a deal by any stretch but pretty fair for his production and defensive acumen. Having a strong 2-way guy with the Sedins will help them a lot and being able to move Hansen down to Horvat's line will really bolster the top 6 strength and overall forward depth.

Eriksson only averaged 19 goals and 49 points per 82 games the three seasons prior to last.

Last year, his 30 goals was driven by a SH% spike that probably added ~5 goals to his goal totals.

He's still a good player, but his play last season shouldn't be reflective even of what to expect for this upcoming season (stripping out the Sedin bonus).

Love this deal, given how the Sedins and Eriksson have played well together. Plus this is one of the rare top line player who can kill penalties.

The term is a bit long but every FA is signed to their 36 or 37 today. Even Reimer gets 5 years...

In the short term I think this makes us better for sure. I see this as a buyout deal in 3-4 years. Gotta chase that playoff revenue though.

Don't mind this signing would've preferred 4 or 5 years but compared to the other deals being handed out I can't complain. It's clear that ownership isn't going to allow a rebuild so might as well spend money on good hockey players.

Terrible news for the next GM. If you thought Burrows was bad...

Too bad the team will suck during the seasons Eriksson is actually valuable.

All in all senseless move.

Really wish we had not signed anyone. But of the UFA's out there this was the best fit for the Sedins.

In 3 years all three of that top line will be either gone, or so washed up we will be able to tank with impunity for the rebuild.

The best move is not to sign any of the big FA. I think most ppl reealize this.

But we are not the one answering to Aquilini.

You can ***** all you want but ownership wont allow a full rebuild.

With that, the Eriksson deal is one of the better deal/target.

Our fanbase in a nutshell right now: We sign a 30goal, 60 pt forward for 6m and are freaking out.

How many points do you think he'll average during the last three years of his contract?

Really?

Were you happy with the way Bieksa, Higgins, Burrows, Hamhuis, good Canucks all, have aged?

I'm not arguing this is a bad contract for 2016-17. It isn't. I'd be happy to see Eriksson get $6 mill from the Canucks in 2016-17.

I hope it works out and Eriksson ages way better than most do. OTOH, I consider the contract ridiculously short-sighted and a huge risk.

But then, Free Agent Frenzy is the time for desperate GMs and their fans to ignore the distant (as in more than a season or two away) future and overpay ridiculously.

I do think the Sedin bonus is something that shouldn't be ignored, there's enough evidence that they should be very productive together based on multiple international tournaments. If Vrbata could pot 30 with them despite never having played together before I'm very optimistic about what Eriksson can do.
