Eriksson is a topline player who can provide the finish the Sedins need. I would much rather have Eriksson than Lucic. The signing is actually pretty decent although the length is about 2-3 years too much. Probably within 2-3 years of his contract Canucks will finally start a rebuild where he will be boughtout or traded for picks. Another positive is it could potentially extend the length of the Sedins willingness to continue their careers. Time will tell.

Very VERY good signing.

He scored 63 points last year (2nd in points in Boston) with 30 goals. Put him with the Sedins and I'm sure this guy will excel.

Good top 6 forward signing.

It feels good that for once we get a top6 via free agency. Yes some people may say the cash is a lot but this is essentially a free asset. He will still be productive for the next 1-5 years.

Yeah, those numbers read like 1st line on a non-playoff team; who's going to be his centre in Year 3-4, never mind the nadir of this contract... Only scarier thing is Benning's still looking for another piece (not denying ones needed) and views a trade as the likely avenue... Can you say 'Assets goodbye!' ... Guess that Columbus 2nd rounder is burning a hole in his pocket.

No an entire inured blueline and an injured first line center on the opposition helped the Bruins. People don't want to here that but it's the truth. The swagger the Bruins had doesn't mean anything if the Canucks were at all healthy compared to the Bruins.

There is a common identity to all successful teams. They have good players. Period. That's it. There is no secret sauce of needing intimidating players etc etc etc. And besides we are talking Backes who is one of the least intimidating playoff players. He runs around a bit and flexes some muscles but his playoff performance in his career has been underwhelming and everyone knows it. No opposition is scared of Backes.

And while I'm at it...big scary bruising D-men also don't intimidate NHL players you find on good teams.

Man Canucks fans are annoying sometimes.....no amount of health would have lead the Canucks to score MORE goals. Which was there main problem.

I don't think this is a great signing but I am happy with this signing. Does that makes sense?

I think Eriksson is actually the best all around player available. Whether it's the eye test, offensive production, or underlying numbers, Eriksson is a really good player by any metric.

6 years at $6M AAV of course is a high price and lengthy contract. But it's obviously market price. The top UFA forwards pretty much got similar money and term. He will turn 31 in a few weeks time, but like I said before, I think he does have the type of game that ages well. Will his production decline during the last 2-3 years of his contract? Probably, but he should still be offensively productive.

Eriksson makes the Canucks better. And honestly, I think with good health the Canucks will make the playoffs next season.

Exactly this.

last time vancouver signed a top 6 was in 2009 Mikael Samuelson. had a career year with the twins and was a monster in the series against L.a 3yrs i beleive that was until injuries started to creep up and evenutally he got traded to florida.

I would argue that the last time the Canucks signed a top 6 was Vrbata. Samuelsson was regarded as a 3rd line winger at the time of the signing but Gillis correctly saw upside.

Ya Vrbata was the last. Eriksson is an even better player than Vrbata though and he's the best forward we've signed as an FA in quite a while

Hopefully doesn't go full Vrbata. Still can't believe Vrby went Vrby, he was fantastic his 1st year here. Guess I don't mind throwing some money at LE, gotta watch something worth watching this season. Would like it if we held onto some assets though, maybe even acquired some..

eh, we'd still have an assload of swedes. if we end up drafting Liljegren (which I would kill to be able to do), we could roll this at some point.

Edler-Liljegren
Markstrom

****ing beautiful.

What's Liljegren's comparable? Haven't had a chance to watch him play yet. You seem to be pretty high on him.

Obviously I haven't been able to see a **** ton of him (maybe like 6 or so games), but I do think he can be that Doughty kinda do-it-all defenceman with a great point shot. I wish I was able to see more of him but I can't because timezones and such, but he's done very well in the minor Swedish league as well as all the various tournaments he's been in. I think a big factor in why I want him so much is because I think the only way we'll best Edmonton/Arizona/Calgary down the line is to fight fire with water, instead of trying to develop a better offence than those teams (which would be literally impossible to beat Edmonton's offence). Still against drafting by need in the first round, but I want a ton of defencemen and I think Liljegren is going to be an amazing one.

Hampus Lindholm perhaps? Maybe even better at same age.

At any rate Liljegren is the most hyped Swede for the next draft. He is totally dominant against players in his own age in Sweden and is probably forced to play with older players to continue to develop. That could lover his superb stats CV a bit, but he IS a great 2 way D prospect.

And Rodin on the second line.. :)
Smart deal by the Canucks! Havent seen any Swedish player ever have better chemistry whit the Sedins than him . The worry is his concussion-history, one more and I think he is done whit hockey.. Dont think the twins will intimidate any head-hunters either. Maybe the plan is to let Gudbrandson get plenty of ice time whit the top line to "police" the ice and act as an deterrent for head shots and bad hits (?)

this isnt the worst signing, and is kind of like a 'benning tax' - as long as we have the privilege of him being our gm, we just bleed a little bit here, a little bit there. thankfully, he didn't hit a carotid this time

sounds like he could have if he signed russell though

Excellent player, bad term. Will not look good when we'll actually need the cap space in the final couple years. "It's free agency so you have to sign a bad contract if you want a good player" is one of the dumbest things I've heard in my life.

Reeks of impatience and shortsightedness.

I think this is a great signing actually. Vancouver lands one of the biggest free agents this year, it's nice to finish 1st instead of being a bridesmaid (again). His contract is obviously big but IMO it was less than most deals signed on July 1st. Can't complain for getting a guy of Eriksson's caliber for market/less than market value.
