I forgot this was his rookie OHL year.

Thought he played 14-15 in the OHL.

I don't see the point of OJ going to Europe, he just got acclimated to the NA ice so he might as well develop on it. Bouncing back to the Euro ice isn't the best idea IMO.

The new Juice will be here soon. I'd like to see 9 games, let him get his feet wet and show him what he needs to work on this season besides being more of an offensive option in London.
Lol to the guy who says he only carves out a 2/3D career. At 5th overall landing a Hamhuis like replacement while Hamhuis was in his prime and a 2D, I'd be happy with that. A 30-35 point defenceman who can play 25 mins top PK and 2PP is fine with me. He's got better size and IMHO better smarts, I wouldn't be shy to say he has 40 point potential if the Canucks can find themselves a PP producer like Hank Sedin in the Centre position

You say that like a long career as a solid #2/3 NHL defenceman wouldn't be a very solid outcome.

No, I'm just saying that people expecting a top pairing bonafide #1 should tamper their expectations.
Won't likely be an all-star or a top 30 defenseman...

Nevertheless should carve out a solid career.

Sergachev vs. Juolevi will be the next Karlsson vs. Doughty

lol. EK is a generational offensive defenceman and Doughty is the best shutdown defenceman in the league who has 2 cups and 2 gold medals.

Although I do believe Doughty is overrated, those 2 cannot be compared to DD or EK.

same thing was said about Ekblad

Benning himself said that he thought the top 5 players of the 2016 draft were forwards (weeks before the draft), then he picked Juolevi at #5, pre draft talk is all smoke.

Orr he just wanted a dman and the 5 top players were forwards

I'm gonna..
Seems like you have a solid basis for an opinion on a young prospect and how he will turn out.

His analysis seems pretty spot on... 2-3 d-man is likely what Juolevi turns into. I don't know why so many are outraged? Certainly a hell of a lot more accurate than the Drew Doughty comparison... lol.

I'm not enraged, and maybe it is more accurate or the safer bet but it's still just a guess. Discussing potentials is so pointless.

canucks couldve got Matthew Tkachuk overall i think Olli Juolevi is a bust
Calling any drafted player(especially a 1st rounder) a bust before they even see the ice is incredibly shallow and juvenal.

That said, It seems Benning broke the golden rule of drafting, picking need over best player available.

Like Florida seemed to do with Barkov. You just never know who is the best (well you know who is the best that time but still the players are so young that anything can happen) and who has the most potential. Only time will tell.

I like this.

Olli haters can go sit in a dark corner somewhere, us belivers will gladly see how he develops and becomes a steady and important presence on the Vancouver blueline for years and years to come.

Should be going back to juniors this season tho. Which is totally the best thing for him right now.

Not really, Barkov was considered the 3rd best player and 2nd best forward, Juolevi wasn't on anyone's top 5 list and a lot of scouts had him behind Sergachev for defenseman.

My opinion: Columbus and Vancouver handed Edmonton and Calgary two future top line players for two solid NHL players. but you're right about "only time will tell"

Benning said multiple times he had a defensemen in the top 6 of his draft board, that proved to be Juolevi. No clue what some of you are talking about, never said he had 5 forwards in his top 5..

Benning's possible draft rankings:
1. Matthews
2. Laine
3. Puljujarvi
4. Dubois
5. Juolevi
6. Tkachuk

- Canucks address one of their biggest present and future needs and pick what they believe to be the best defensemen in the draft. He happens to be a great puck mover as well.

- "Pass" on a winger that has had his numbers inflated by two fantastic prospects (not saying Tkachuk won't be a great player, but that's the reality of the situation)

- Sign Juolevi to a cheap entry level contract in regards to the average for his draft position, the first top 10 pick to be signed below AAV average for their draft position. (https://mobile.twitter.com/generalfanager/status/761712031372378112)

- Juolevi will go back and play for one of the best talent developers in the CHL, with some of the best facilities as well.

Bust. Benning sucks.

No way.. Drouin and Jones were both considered better than Barkov and in the last weeks before the draft many people thought Colorado would draft jones. Florida fans were upset when they drafted Barkov and not Jones or Drouin.. funny how things work out sometimes.
