Do we... do we go after Rantanen in the summer?
Probably re-signs with the Canes, or asks 13mil+ in UFA

I'd look into something like Konecny. Philly needs a rebuild, and Konecny would be a great fit as a speedy, feisty mid-20's play-driver that is locked up longterm. Plus we'd still have cap space moving forward if treated as an upgrade on Boeser:

Van 2025 1st
Boeser
Mynio

Philly flips boeser for a 1st and b prospect, so essentially they get 2 firsts + 2 prospects and really lean into a rebuild.

Wow, it seems like after nearly a decade of major questions on D that things have finally stabilized and should get even better when Willander arrives and EP2 continues to evolve. What a turnaround in such a short time.
The fact that we can beat a pretty good team in Colorado 3-0 with no Hughes would be unimaginable even just a few weeks ago. It just makes such a difference when you can balance out your D pairs and have everyone playing appropriate minutes and assignments.
No Hughes, maybe that is a good thing. Practice for the near future.
The future once again will be top draft picks and young players under cap control for 6 to 8 years.

Pretty decent cap hit for MP. I would have preferred to wait a little bit longer. Hate to find out he hates flying now or ....

What good would Konecny do at 36 years old? Mid 20's? You mean like 25? More like late 20's at 28yrs old. Pretty much a player getting in the 50's for points for a career average.

Well, currently 27... but under 9 mil per when contracts are about to skyrocket. Fwiw, he's Hronek/Mpettersson age

Career average is a terrible way of looking at a player. He's right about ppg over the last 3 seasons on a shit team. He's become a really good player, in case you didn't know.

Absurd signing. Had to do a triple take and then sleep on it to believe it.

I don't know how these high leverage defensive defensemen keep getting severely undervalued around the league. Everyone is willing to give up picks for them and they're the most saught after guys at the deadline, yet their contracts never reflect that.

Like, in what world do Alex Killorn and Chandler Stephenson get more money than M. Petey? Especially with the cap announcements over the next 3 years making this way smaller as a % of cap in two years time.

From the Canucks standpoint I'll take it, but these agents are pretty brutal at selling their clients value if they don't have good hockey card stats.

Holy f***.

That’s a crazy contract for a legit 2D in his prime. Trade now looks fantastic. Great work to get in front of the market for this player.

Now get O’Connor signed.

If MS reacts like this, you know it's a good deal.

I know you have ton of experience in the field
A scholar in that regard to say the least

Legitimately excited about how our D core is shaping up getting a legitimate top 3 defenseman, the emergence of D-Petey, and hopefully soon the arrival of Willander.

Our priorities now is focus on getting a new top line/top 6 players.

Well, very happy I was right on this one. Some of the numbers people were throwing around here were just whack. Glad they weren't in charge. I figured there would be some willingness from both parties to sign a fair deal benefitting both sides.

Great signing! That's the exact type of player we need to compliment Hughes on the second line. We didn't need to do something stupid and sign a PP specialist at $8 mil+ like OEL. Could you imagine how dumb that would be ... but no one is that dumb right?

This is exactly how I saw this playing out both timeline and target wise. The long-term goal was always to fix the defence for the future, not blow our chances with some short-sighted panic move in the offseason. It was always going to be a little tricky. Thank goodness we passed on Zadorov, and got the player who is twice or three times the defender at the same price. Absolute no brainer now and going forward.

Hughes Hronek
MPetterson Myers
EPetterson Willander

Now that's a good looking and realistic future. Plus in the short term we have both Forbort, and Soucy.

Beautiful! Hockey just got fun again.

I predicted $7m. I stand by that as his true value.

The UFA market is just going to be silly season this year. Impact players are going to signed to contracts that not only take into account this summer's increases, but the escalating increases in the coming seasons. The fact that this contract is considered a solid deal with respect to the deals signed last summer show that it's an absolute steal.

As a reference, Edler, Hamhuis, and Bieksa signed for 7.15% - 7.78% of the cap when they were with the Canucks in the early 2010's. That's the range that I expected. The cap was increasing but not as fast as it is now, and those contracts were considered team friendly.

This deal is 5.78% of the cap. Even if you think he's a #3 it's still incredible value.

Losing Zadorov was a blow but I always thought it could be for the best if he was replaced by a defender that could really stabalize a pairing on their own. I had been hoping for Sandhiem but MP3 makes sense too. What he lacks in tools he makes up for with cerebral reads and patient defense.

If Pettersson can maintain his game for most of the contract paying a 1st to upgrade Zadorov or Pettersson is probably a good trade off.

It’s basically some type of hometown discount but he didn’t play here. Sounds like the relationship with Rutherford helped and they somewhat capitalized on his excitement to be here.

Still somewhat surprised he didn’t hold out at least a little while longer.

Just kind of amazing to consider we now have a top three of Hughes, Hronek and Pettersson, and Willander should be joining us before too long. After such a rocky first half for the defense, it now looks like we've really solidified it for the next few years to come, and I think this is just a steal of a deal as far as value goes. His game reminds me so much of Chris Tanev in the "he never puts a foot wrong" and always seems to be in the right spot. I've said before, not as devil may care in the shot blocking department as Tanev is (which may be a good thing when it comes to his durability), but he's going to be a massive stabilizing presence on our blueline. Tidy work to quickly parlay the JT Miller trade assets into getting him, and then locking him up.

Long term contracts for the top three is exciting.
Hughes
Hronek
M. Pettersson

Together with a very impressive emerging group, is phenomenal.
D-Petey
Willander
Mancini
Kudryavtsev
Minio

Sprinkle in some veterans as needed (eg Myers, Soucy) and you have the makings of a solid D-core for years to come. What a difference a month makes with the addition/emergence of the bolded.

Great deal chef

At least he was a pretty cheap rental in terms of what we had to give up to trade for him. Worthy gamble at that price (just not at the one he was looking for to be re-signed).
