Decent prospect, but seems early to be signing him - this is the sort of pick where you can get sunk-costed and give the guy a contract and it ends up being a Focht or a Plasek.

Edit : also, yes - I'd expect he's nearly a lock to be getting an ATO in a couple weeks when the OHL season ends on March 26.

Canucks will sign just any prospect d-man right now.......hopefully it's not 'quantity' over 'quality'. But this kid is trending well for a 7th round draft pick.

Listed on Hockey DB as 6'0" and 200, so he's not tall but definitely not 'small'. So hard to assess players--particularly d-man--who are playing on bad teams in the OHL. The Soo Greyhounds have the second worst record in the OHL.

But if Kudryavtsev can even carve out a regular role in Abbotsford, then it's 'win' for a 7th rounder and the Canucks scouts.

Imo anytime a 7th rounder gets an NHL contract, it's a win for the scouts.

So Kudryavtsev joins Johannson, Jurmo, D-Petey, Truscott, Gabrielson and a few others I've probably forgotten as prospect d-men in the Canucks system.

Hopefully one or two of them will make it......my money is on 'D-Petey' and Johansson.

The ones you omitted are tough to remember (I had to check): Jackson Dorrington and Victor Persson

Glad to see he was signed with the Canucks but hoping he's back with the Greyhounds next season as we are bidding for the Memorial Cup in 2024. He is arguably our best defenseman and a run next season would do well for him. I read somewhere he isn't eligible for AHL next season, either he plays with the Canucks or is back with the Sault but I could be wrong

After starting to follow him a little post draft I always wondered why he fell to the 7th round...any thoughts?

He had a decent start as a 16 year old in the MHL, a good draft year in the OHL. The scouting report on elite prospects 2022 draft guide starts: "one of the smartest activators in the draft class, Kudryavtsev’s upside comes from both supporting the offence and creating it."

Good size. His D+1 year has been very solid.

The question is, why didn't he go a lot higher?

I posted earlier but Canucks top prospect reporter Chris Faber said he’ll be back with the Greyhounds next year.

Smaller defenseman without any obvious standout tools plus the Russian factor, despite already in NA, we’re why. At a certain point it seems he just kind of got passed over and teams preferred players with louder skills.

He was drafted from the CHL so he's classed the same as any Canadian player playing major junior and he's ineligible for the AHL next year. It's either back to the OHL or he goes back to Europe.

I thought he was a potential steal in the 7th round. With that said, he was an undersized Dman with skating issues. Anyone know if his skating has gotten better?

I'm not sure what the urgency is to sign him at this time. To prevent him from going back to Russia?
It's hard to tell a player by stat watching though. Matt Brassard looked pretty good in his draft + 1 year.

That's Jack Studnicka's teammate, Matt Brassard! Very good pull.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is a bit of a backroom deal with Milstein.

He might have been 'small' when he was drafted, but the prospect sites list him a 6', 200....since he's only 19, he likely plays at 210-215 as a pro. Stocky, would be the best way to describe him.

For context: Matt Dumba is listed at 6'0" and 195; and Jett Woo is listed at 6', 205. If Kudryavtsev can bring some offense to the table, he can definitely play at his size.

I'm not saying he can't play at his size. He can even play if he was 5'11" 190lbs. But Dumba and Woo are + skaters who naturally does play a more physical game. Dumba's skating allows him to throw big hits. Woo was typically stronger than his peers.

I'm not concerned about Kudryavtsev's size and strength in and of itself. But his size doesn't afford him the margin for error that he otherwise would if he was a better skater.

All that's left is to draft Michkov when he falls during the draft and the Russian infinity gauntlet will be complete.
Something is definitely happening with the Canucks and the 'Russian factor' . When it came to signing and developing Russian players, in the past Vancouver was the equivalent of the NHL's gulag.

For awhile, Vancouver was always in the mix. Larionov and Krutov were two of the first Rusians to get out of the Soviet Union. And Bure was a star and a HOF'er along with Mogilny, who should have been.

But beginning in about 2000--something happened. Maybe Burkie and Nonis just didn't like Russian players; and Mike Gillis didn't seek them out either.

So today, it might be the ascension of a European as GM; or maybe the drafting of Podkolzin with a top-10 pick broke the ice. But whatever it is, Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Kravstov and Kudryavtsev have been added in quick succession. And when you add in Danila Klimovich, who is Belarussian, then it becomes the 'Russian six'

And we're led to believe there could be another signing or two from the KHL this off-season. And with Sergei Gonchar firmly established behind the bench as as assistant-coach, something is definitely happening the Russian file in VanCity as it keeps on growing..
