Tom Wilander and Elias Pettersson II......Canucks 'shutdown pair' of the future......who look like they could probably play in the league for the next decade.

Been a long time since Canuck fans have anticipated the arrival of two young d-men like these guys.

It's crazy to see him looking good in the NHL, when he couldn't even crack an SHL roster last year. Really illustrates how much he's developed in the last few months.

I remember seeing him play early this year in Abbotsford and thinking "oh this kid is going to be something for this team". You can see he has great hockey sense. He's smart with the puck and makes the right choices. I can't wait to see him develop.

You guys need to pump the breaks and let see how he plays untill the end of the season. I would be happy even if he becomes only a reliable 3rd pair defender. If he becomes more it would be fantastic.

Only 4-5 players after the 2nd round in the 2022 draft have played a game. Guess we hit one of them, lets hope he keeps it up and not make our expectations to unrealistic.

Also.

Cracking an SHL roster as a teenager is really really hard.
It is but 17 months later he is cracking the NHL and his development is something to excited about and to watch as he is still in development.

At worst he looks like he will become a high end 3rd pairing Dman.

I had thought that based on my WJCs viewings his ceiling was likely a bottom defensemen. But he’s looking like he has real top four potential. Happy to be wrong on that.

The way he handled himself after making a big hit and getting challenged to a fight was like watching a 10 year vet. I think Ray made a comment about it on the broadcast as well.

If the only thing separating a AAAA player and an NHL player is some unquantifiable asset between the ears, then Pettersson has it. For a 20 year old he is making very smart plays. No doubt there will be some growing pains but like Jyrki said, we got a player here.

His development makes any contract extension with M. Pettersson interesting. D Petey has 2 more ELC years left on his contract. So, if Hughes gets extended, and D Petey continues to develop, probably going to need some flexibility in terms of potentially moving M. Pettersson. I would expect any new deal for him to include a full NTC for the first 2-4 years of his contract, depending on the term and salary.

Anyone is moveable even if they have a nmc. If Dpetey grows to a point where he is a legit 2nd pair anchor then you figure out what to do with MP then. There will always be a market for top4D and yeah there might be 2 more expansion draft so you might as well hoarde as many top4 D right now because we can’t protect them all.

If he’s playing 3rd pairing it also likely keeps his contract down after his ELC, so if things pan out where he seems poised to take over for MP, hopefully that either means a cheaper bridge followed by a longer deal after MP is gone (or a short overlap), or one of those long term deals for young players we often see where there’s a higher cap hit than they’ve earned, but the potential to be a steal if they stay on their development path.

Smaller rink size has helped him for sure. I don't usually ascribe to that as much, but definitely for a dman who is mobile, a good skater, but not elite nor a burner so to speak, being able to get to guys faster, and bring more of that physical element really is shining.

No wonder that he comes to the AHL and immediately is recognized as an all star.
