Because of the Larkin trade request, EP40 now has some value. Wouldn't be surprised if the Wings use some of the assets they get for Larkin in a Pettersson trade now.

Nothing screams team failure more than when your captain requests a trade.

Because of the Larkin trade request, EP40 now has some value. Wouldn't be surprised if the Wings use some of the assets they get for Larkin in a Pettersson trade now.

I see it as competition actually. So now instead of EP40
Being the only proven centerman now there’s another one.

3 weeks away...need more picks

I don't see DeBrusk being here past the draft. Other than that I doubt anything more gets done until the July 15 to Sept 15 window.
The way they're talking, EP40 is expected to be at training camp. Sure, a can't refuse offer could come in in the summer but it doesn't sound like they're shopping him.
Hronek would return significant assets but, IMO, he's the least likely to move.
Other than those three, it really is piecemeal for smaller, less impactful, returns.

so i watched that ryan johnson podcast interview and listened to a brief cbc interview of manny. i have been ruminating. i don't think we're going to see many trades. i think they are going to work to make the most of what they have and that is the team philosophy. to a much greater extent than i thought, this is already the sedins' team and they have been quietly building up to that in the background.

rj and manny right now are all about what the sedins are about. there's definitely ego in both of them but it's under control and they are bought into the selfless mentality that the sedins personify.

the sedins as players specialized in raising up and getting the best out of what were seen as limited or flawed players: carter, pyatt, samuelsson and erhoff enjoyed career years with them, with the first three enjoying major career revivals. burrows developed from roller hockey summers dude to a star. overall the sedin canucks were a four line team.

the sedins when hired into hockey ops and told to do as they please, avoided chasing titles and the limelight, and gravitated to on ice player development and to anonymity in abby where they worked with a bunch of unheralded prospects and helped them to a calder cup and helped several develop into nhl players, and got others very close.

listening to rj and manny, i don't think it's a stretch to say they also worked with and on rj and manny.

what i think we are going to see is a big emphasis on player development at all levels combined with controlling and improving the hockey environment. that likely means less tinkering trades to make players feel more secure. players who buck the trend or upset the environment will leave whether or not they produce. players busting their asses will be given every chance.

it remains to be seen whether this can be done without being ruthless because i am not sure these guys are ruthless. what happened to the sedin canucks after 2011 when they lost momentum and needed to make hard changes is the part i am not sure this group is prepared to address.

Filling Out the Front Office
  • A lot of positions to fill and have been talking to agents
  • One agent Dhaliwal talked to had conversations about the AGM role; doesn’t want to take a big pay cut
  • Daren Hermiston worked for Wasserman Group; title will be something like Director of Player Development and Player Performance
  • Hermiston worked with bantam-aged players to get them ready for the WHL
  • Johnson is still looking for a good right-hand man
  • Jim Benning’s downfall, in the end, was having John Weisbrod as his go-to guy
Manny Malhotra
  • Will fix the bad body language; gave tough love to players in Abbotsford and will do the same in Vancouver
  • Really looks up to Rod Brind’Amour
Improved Perception
  • Everyone has all been on the same page from top down; wasn’t the case for the last two years
  • A few agents reached out and said that the Canucks are much better to deal with
Brendan Gallagher
  • His agent has permission to facilitate a trade
  • Canucks are obviously an option for him; family lives in Vancouver, played for the Giants, and Dad runs a hockey academy
  • Would helps the Canucks culture
  • There’s a chance that the Canucks would have to give up a late round pick to acquire him
  • Him mentioning Vancouver during his exit interview caught a lot of people off guard
  • He lives in Tswassen in the offseason
  • Has great practice habits and is a great pro on and off the ice
Canucks’ UFAs
  • Johnson have been so busy that he hasn’t checked in with the Canucks’ own UFAs but will get to them
  • Will not be bringing Evander Kane back
  • Douglas contract would be easy to do
Alex Burrows
  • Has a young family in Montreal; doesn’t think the timing is right for him to move
Open Positions
  • Looking for a AGM and need a head coach for Abbotsford
  • Would be shocked if Todd Harvey isn’t offered a contract extension
  • Need to sort out Abbotsford’s development team
Canucks At the NHL Combine
  • Ended up not taking Caleb Malhotra out for dinner; not a red flag
  • Chase Reid is their top defenceman
  • Have separate meetings with the Ruck brothers; will talk to both separately today
  • Some team will attempt to draft both of them
  • Can take a potential draftee to dinner at the draft; did this with Lekkerimaki, Filip Bystedt, and Ryan Chelsey
  • Draft list after interviews will probably change
  • The top-4 is clear; McKenna, Malhotra, Reid, and Stenberg
Adam Foote
  • Will be interested to see if there’s a fit with the Mammoth; has a connection with Andre Tourigny
  • Is well respected around the league
  • Finds it hard to believe he would get a head coaching job anytime soon
Beck Malenstyn
  • Will be significant interest in him on July 1st if he doesn’t re-sign in Buffalo
  • Is fast, physical, and from Vancouver

Brendan Gallagher
  • His agent has permission to facilitate a trade
  • Canucks are obviously an option for him; family lives in Vancouver, played for the Giants, and Dad runs a hockey academy
  • Would helps the Canucks culture
  • There’s a chance that the Canucks would have to give up a late round pick to acquire him
  • Him mentioning Vancouver during his exit interview caught a lot of people off guard
  • He lives in Tswassen in the offseason
  • Has great practice habits and is a great pro on and off the ice
The idea of paying anything for Gallagher is painful...I hope this is just a Dhaliwal delusion. I'm ok with taking him on as a negative value asset that provides us with something of value in return, but to pay? Just no, not worth it.

Nothing Canucks-related.

Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request
  • No public comments on this
  • Thinks Matthew Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes have changed the league
  • Won’t be the last trade request of the off-season
  • Even younger players are making trade requests now
  • Players on the American Olympic team now have an even greater desire to win the Stanley Cup
  • Has a bit of a frosty relationship with Yzerman; hasn’t always been an easy relationship between them
  • Thinks he told the Red Wings that he wants to go to a deeper team
  • Yzerman was unhappy that he added to the roster and they still didn’t make the playoffs
  • Yzerman will not be backed into a corner; will be pragmatic
  • Friedman suggests the Stars, Lightning, and the Wild; doesn’t think the Panthers could make it work but can never discount them
  • This has the Wild written all over them; mentions Danila Yurov and Charlie Stramel as potential pieces
  • Doesn’t think he will want to come to Canada
  • Thinks there will be hard feelings here from the Red Wings
Michael McCarron
  • A couple of teams at the combine said they believe he will re-sign with the Wild
  • Unsure if the Larkin news changes the Wild’s plans with him
Edmonton Oilers
  • A season ago, Oilers went to a few players with NMCs and asked if they would be willing to waive; Darnell Nurse refused and was upset that word go out
  • Is a season away from Nurse’s NTC becoming a partial NTC; is being told he can work with the Oilers next year or they will find a trade without his input next year
  • Thought they were willing to wait for Bruce Cassidy to be available but is starting to think they won’t; wonders if they bring in a coach for a year
  • Privately, the Golden Knights are indicating they won’t let Cassidy talk to certain teams
  • Thinks they have recently interviewed Peter Laviolette and Craig Berube
Los Angeles Kings
  • Thinks we will know their coach early next week
  • Jay Woodcroft and D.J. Smith are the two favourites
Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Eric Lacroix, who works for the Maple Leafs, knows Patrick Roy very well
  • Thinks Peter Laviolette is a legitimate candidate
  • Does think David Carle is not an option
  • Have considered the possibility that they need an experienced coach
  • Think Jeff Halpern is out because of his lack of experience
  • Has heard similar to Pagnotta’s report on Matthew Knies for Alexander Zharovsky, another prospect, and two 1sts; the trade didn’t happen because it was submitted at 3:01pm; a lot of people pointed fingers
  • New management will not circle back on this trade; possible the Canadiens want to revisit it but believes the deal is off the table

His cap hit isn't stopping them from re signing or signing anyone.

Only owed 4 million. I think we'd have to trade a 7th round pick or something
All irrelevant because no team needs him at all, especially montreal.

Ppl take Crown Dhaliwal way too seriously but Montreal adds an asset or they can keep his cap hit on the payroll, or find another team, does not matter to Canucks.

Drance was saying he asked other teams at the combine and they all said montreal would get something back. Nothing to do with Dhali

Drance changes nothing.

An old, slow, 6.5M healthy scratch does not have any value, none.
Which team that Montreal contacts will say yes, we want him and will give you a draft pick to acquire him at full cap hit so no other team beats us..?

Its crazy ppl will argue anything, this shouldn't be one of them.

Best trade offers from other fan bases show there is some mild interested in some of our players.

Graves, Pittburgh's 1st and Horcoff for EP40
Buffalo's 1st for Debrusk (with an option for Poltapov, Schenn's UFA rights and Greenway for a late pick)
Gallagher+what ever for FCs

We can have a returning veteran core of Demko, Lank, Hronek, Boeser and Pettersson, young guys in Rossi, Buium, Willander, Pettersson, Lekk, Ohgren and O'Connor and turn things around with the likes of Schenn returning for that mentor role and Gallagher can try for that kind of role with our forwards. Plus, Greenway and Graves are....big?

Draft BPA, use two of the late firsts we have to get the Rucks, and BPA for the rest of the top 90, and I think we can be in alright shape for the first full year of a rebuild.
