I dont understand the term own rental its so weird
It requires some mental gymnastics for sure. The idea of rentals is you are adding something to the team. With ‘own rental’ you’re just not losing anything indicating your team is good enough. It’s usually used by bubble teams so there does seem to be a disconnect in team evaluation lol.

Issue is how do you replace those goals if you miss out on Ehlers Rantanen Marner plus add another player who can replace the difference between Miller and Chytil? Are you ok with going to free agency needing 2 players to even become a playoff team? Is this a viable plan considering you just traded a 1st round pick from a non playoff team for a pending UFA defenseman?

To be honest I would actually like to take a shot on a couple of retread ufa's with shorter term and hope one or both replace Boeser's 25 goals while looking for a long term solution via trade. Edit: Rakell could be a decent trade option depending on price. 3 years left though. Bjorkstrand too, 1 year left. A fringe guy like Ryan Donato might even be good for a handful of goals.

Realistically we are looking at replacing Boeser plus one of (Hoglander, Joshua, O'Conner). Hoglander is on pace for 7 goals and Boeser 28 so 35 goals between 2 players.

yes i've been big on the make a deal if you can get a young almost top6 ready player. My favourite would be a Mercer for Boeser type deal

Sign me up for anything like this.

I agree with you on the messaging, and I agree with you that players don't think like posters on HF. The players absolutely still believe in their team, and 100% want to compete for the playoffs, and trading Boeser (without immediately reallocating those assets) will be a shot to player morale.

And I am fine with the keep Quinn happy idea, although I ultimately don't think he will stay, so trying to be as competitive as possible makes sense. But, consider this, if you are going to miss the playoffs once over the next two playoffs, do you think missing the playoffs this year or next year will be more detrimental to re-signing Hughes? Because I think it is obviously the latter. So if you can trade Boeser for futures right now, and make a very good trade with those futures in the summer, and be more competitive next year, I can see that route being the more likely route of keeping Quinn here.

UFA class at forward doesn't look great this summer so trying to merely fill the gap or improve the team offensively through free agency, with Boeser's money, may prove more difficult than acquiring a player(s) with futures.

Plus, I don't think losing Boeser will actually have a big impact on the Canucks playoff chances this year.

Very well said. All of it. Love the point concerning where the timing of our focus should be. My sentiments exactly.
---------------------------------------------------------

On a related note is it really true that absolutely nobody trades any of their own players when they are hanging around close to a wildcard spot?

I know that most teams will generally keep their push going for the playoffs but in my mind I seem to recall a number of teams trading a player or two while being in this position, and my respecting them hugely for the vision and action.

I will take a look myself when I get back from walking the dog but just wondering if anyone has actually checked these claims.

All depends on whether or not they are getting decent offers. I am hoping we let him him walk. I just don’t think he’s worth a big contract. He’s been a valuable player. I’ll give him that. I just think he’s been overpaid for a bunch of his contract.
Oh I fully agree. A 8 year deal "which is the rumored ask from the Boes camp" is way too much, especially if it's anywhere close to 8 million. Boes is slow right now, could you imagine him in 8 years. I prefer for him to be traded instead of letting him walk without gaining any assets for the future.

Signing Brock Boeser to a 8 year deal when we have EP for 8 is like watching a movie and the villain gives somebody the slow final blow to kill them.

Thats how this feels

I notice how much some posters are so narrow minded they ignore anything other than their opinions.

Outside influences are going to hit the team, very soon.
Not just other teams outperforming their rebuilds catching and surpassing the Canucks

Today's events should change the Canucks management plan.
Drafted players and RFA's are the shorter term solution.

Boeser at 8 mil US is for the Canucks really 11.6 CDN.

I expect an internal cap now.

Yeah for sure

I also find it a generated faux fan appeasement term

I find it in the same bucket as distressed asset.

Florida Panthers
  • Wouldn’t surprise anyone if they get aggressive
  • Looking for goaltending depth

sergei bobrovsky is 36 with one year left... doubt it's a deadline move, but wonder if they would be interested in demko at the draft

unlike some of the other teams that could be potentially after him, they wouldn't really care whether he holds up for 5+ more years... their prime window is the next few years anyways

for a deadline move, would look to send silovs for a mid-round pick if we can get it

I wonder if Jesper Boqvist is a player the Canucks would target this week. Florida has depth at centre and it's an RFA which they will probably not be able to afford.

Boeser for a package of Boqvust and a pick? FLA has the cap space now.

Bill Zito is a shooter and he loves to take on players that other teams throw atop the junk pile, but Demko is so unreliable health wise, it's hard to imagine someone giving up any asset for him.

Unless we absolutely need the cap space for something, i think he'll be back next year as a 1B. if he stays healthy and were in the mix, they'll probably just let him walk to free agency; if we're not in the mix they'll try and move him heading into the 2026 TDL. I don't see him getting another contract from us unless it's at 1 year reclamation for $$ that can be buried.

The only thing we should be targeting for Boeser is someone who can skate fast and has size with some grit.Im still on the Brady Tkachuk bandwagon buy it will take more then Boeser.

You know it's bad when my local Sask radio is bringing on Brendan Batchelor to talk about how depressing the Canucks are this year.

What's your flavor?

95.1 or 102.1 - my guess
98.3 - my station ... I'm getting old haha
90.5 - my backup ... at least it's different all the time ... really diverse stuff
92.9 - I am coming around on country but never on purpose :naughty:

EP for Barzal pls
Boeser for whatever
Flip that for Tuch pls
Call up Lekkerimaki ffs

DeBrusk - Barzal - Tuch
O'Connor - Chytil - Lekkerimaki
Joshua - Suter - Garland
Hoglander - Blueger - Sherwood

there I fixed our team

As long as Edmonton doesn’t acquire a legit goalie and another legit top 6 scorer, these small moves don’t really improve them too much tbh
