Trading draft picks and prospects to build around the declining 34 year old Sedins in 2014 is pretty clearly not the same thing as selling the same kinds of assets to build a competitive team to prevent a 25 year old Hughes from ditching us to play with his brothers.

Also a team sitting in the playoffs coming off a 109-point season as opposed to a bottom-5 team in the league. It's an insane comparison.

If Hughes is going to walk or want out, there's not a damn thing this franchise can do about it. They would have to be a top 5 team in the league and right on the edge of a big run - I don't think anyone here is delusional enough to believe that's coming. This year's team would get stomped by last year's team.

Even then, if the choice is between taking a 7 year deal with full NMC and $105 million, and adding an additional $15 million, you can bet your ass it's worth that cash for Hughes to play with his brothers in a once in a lifetime opportunity (let alone the money and security). The only way I see him staying here is if NJ collapses in the next few seasons - and they seem to be faltering a bit. Jack just got injured for what seems like another long term timeline again.

I think the wild card in what we do is how healthy is Hughes. If he is going to be out for a significant time, I think you sell.

I think the players would understand that without him we don't really have a chance and playoffs is not likely.

With him I think you make moves to improve the club, and that can still include trading a Boeser, if you are making other moves to backfill and improve.

I think the biggest challenge in competing during a Cap Era is maximizing your roster talent while your ELCs are outperforming their cap hits.

We needed to be a true contender while our core had a combined hit of $20 million. But that got f***ed because of horrendous asset management through the rest of the roster. That's where your Beagles and Roussels are absolute death sentences.

Now we need another wave of elite ELC talent. Willander and Lekkerimaki are a start, but they aren't on the same level of Pettersson and Hughes.

What's so damn frustrating is despite all of those death sentence contracts, we were almost out of it. Almost free. Then Aquilini allowed Benning to do one more trade to save his job and now we're paying for a bought out OEL.

Idiots. Both of them.

Both Quinn and Jack are showing signs of physical decline due to their smaller stature, particularly Jack. Out again with a f***ed up shoulder. Remains to be seen if Luke is the same, although he's got a bigger frame.

Quinn was good and healthy due to his elusiveness until opposing teams realized that he is literally our entire game plan, then they just sent out goons like Evander Kane to take runs at him and knock him out of the lineup. Hyman drove him headfirst into the boards last summer in a clear attempt to injure.

Size matters in the NHL. Makar is often injured as well. This is why small PMDs may have transformed the "rover" position, but they are still taking forecheck hits from 6'4" goliaths.

I am almost exactly Quinn's size and if I took frequent hits from someone much larger (in my own beer league) it wouldn't take much to send me off the ice with my arm hanging down to my side.

That one trade was the nail in the coffin for this core. We all knew it, some of us just tried to pretend. But it was so clear that it would come back to bite us in the ass - now the penalty goes up to $5 million for the next two seasons.

They had two years to make a run after the OEL buyout, last year and this year. And they didn't.

I'm pretty confident he's getting traded, he's a Benning player. They have shown no issue with removing the old guard.

Im starting to warm up to the idea of offering Tavares a 2 year contract.

Term is short. Yes hes slow but he's consistent and he would offer some leadership qualities. Id put him in the 1RW instead of Boeser.

The term being 2 years is key.

Debrusk - EP - Tavares is isn't world class but it's tolerable.

very misleading sounding tweet. i assume the canucks made an offer that boeser turned down and they have not made another, presumably owing to a clear impasse. that offer is not currently on the table because i don't think any team leaves a standing offer on the table for an extended period because that can lead to embarrassment. they don't want to be calling boeser's agent just before they make another move to yank the offer or boeser is going to know the other player was being prioritized over him.

different situations, but the lankinen contract doesn't look great compared to this

Funny because this makes Lankinen contract look great.

Lindgren has had one good year in his career, otherwise been an OK backup.

His SVP is 898 in 27 games on the best team in the NHL. In contrast, Logan Thompson has 919 SVP.

Lankinen is 2 years younger so the term basically nets out the same (3 v 5y).

Lankinen is expected to be a 1A starter to play 40-50 games whereas Lindgren is expected to be the 1B starter to play 30-40 games.

Lankinen only makes 1.5M more which is immaterial in the rising cap environment.

Did he have a pair of Canucks pajamas as a kid?
