We had nobody even close to Hughes in 2014. Sedins had already started declining.
it still doesn't necessitate taking on so much risk and players who were all expendable and secondary when we need to maximize assets to get top end players to play with Hughes and Pettersson.

Maccelli is not a bad target.

He's a very, very good passer. Can thread passes through seams very well.

Just a numbers game there for him in Utah, when they already have Keller, Schmaltz and recent Cooley.

He just got squeezed out.

Obviously he's small, that's the downside and canucks aren't the biggest or most physical up front already.

But as a sneaky under the radar option to distribute the puck he fits the bill.

That's what I thought too. They've had all kinds of troubles including injuries early on. Apparently their left side is pretty solid now though with Cole and Matta, although I think Matta is UFA next year. I wonder if a Hoglander swap might be an option. Do you have any views on Macelli's defensive side compared to Hoglander?
Cole and Matta are both UFA on July 1st and neither have any trade protection, so trading for Soucy gives them the option of moving those guys for picks at the deadline.

Not a fan of moving Soucy at all before the end of the season unless it's a value added TDL move. I know he's sucked and had his LOL worthy moments this season but he was also overplayed a lot due to Hronek's injury and our lack of depth. We'd be selling him at his lowest value, and would have the exact same problem happen again if one of Hughes/Hronek/MP3 went down for the foreseeable future.

Odds are he can improve playing bottom-pairing minutes or even just with the 4-Nations break.

I think it's a question of whether Soucy gets into the lineup or not.

I agree with waiting a bit as we find out the extent of Hughes' injury and EP25 gets more minutes. It's worthwhile to point out that he's been very sheltered so far. Brannstrom also looked good in those minutes.

Forbort has been playing well but he's had a lot of injury issues over the past couple of years.

Calgary Flames & Dylan Cozens
  • Extremely interested in him
  • Sabres aren’t shopping him but are taking calls because of their position in the standings
  • Would have to be a hockey trade
Canucks
  • Main priority is finding a top-6 centre between now and the start of next season
  • Can’t guarantee they will find a top-6 centre before March. 7th
  • Have talked to Buffalo about Dylan Cozens; believes it was part of the Elias Pettersson trade talks
  • Have taken Pettersson off the market for now
  • Have cap flexibility and would like to acquire a centre

I do not expect Soucy to be traded in the next couple of weeks. One of the advantages of doing the Petterson trade now is that it allows time to extend him at a reasonable rate, failing which he can be moved at the deadline. Soucy will not be traded unless and until Petterson is extended. Even if he is extended, I think most of us agree that we would rather have Soucy on the right side than Juulsen anywhere on the ice. It would also improve his trade value if he can perform well on his off-side.

I agree to an extent. He HAS been wedged into a position he's not fit for. There's still some time before TDL, and with the new kids on the block, we can see how he'll do in a lesser role with some more games.

If he continues to fumble his game, then it'll be a case of "Crew Expendable" for the TDL.

I don't know why people would want to play Soucy on his off side instead Juulsen when he's performed the worse of the two this season. Juulsen looked ok with EP25.

I was completely confused by this until I realized I was thinking of a different "Pettersson trade."

("He's already extended! What are you talking about??!!)

What happened to Soucy? He turned 30 moments before the season started.

He should be playing on the right side instead of Juulsen IMO
My best guesses:
1. He turned 30 but not sure what this possibly did
2. He had a baby over the summer (stress?)
3. Playoffs burned him out (plausible)
4. ?? (??)

Trading Soucy to recoup an asset makes a ton of sense, even if the return is mediocre. He has been brutal this season and we have seen that D Petey can handle bottom pairing minutes. Willander is also coming and will need playing time.
Last year he missed most of the season as well.

Willander, don't put so much hype on him. He will be given ice time but if he plays under Tocchet then Tocchet was ordered to play him. Tocchet doesn't have time for teaching, he said so himself.

Soucy being moved? It has been a rocky road for him under Tocchet, left side, right side, benched for a mistake, healthy scratched.

He could be a sweetener in a Boeser trade if the Canucks retained 50% of Boeser cap hit. Veteran, large LHD. As depth guy on any team he would help.

This could also be a purge of players unhappy under Tocchet.

The "in the system" depth for the defence is looking good. Should be enough to fill in the 3/4/5/6/7 spots for years.

Some defenseman are very vulnerable to falling off in their early 30's. Jason Garrison was another guy who was a decent #4 guy and absolutely tanked when he hit 31.

Anthems
  • When HNIC was owned by CBC, they stopped showing the anthems during playoff games and got a lot of complaints from fans
  • Fans liked seeing the players and the buildup to the game
  • Wasn’t a small number of people either
New York Islanders
  • Rumour going around that Mathew Barzal is out for the season; getting other medical opinions
Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Doesn’t think Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski injuries alter theirplans
  • Trying to extend Mathieu Olivier and Dante Fabbro
Vancouver Canucks
  • Thinks Carson Soucy is available
  • Soucy is probably aware of this; not a lot of room for him anymore; be willing to work with the team to find a place for him to play
  • If the Canucks make the playoffs or they are close, doesn’t understand how you wouldn’t vote for Hughes
Calgary Flames
  • Were considering acquiring a rental centre as long as it was inexpensive
  • If Calgary makes the playoffs, Dustin Wolf has to win the Calder
Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Willing to listen to just about anything, except the obvious
  • Really curious what they do with the Rangers’ 1st round pick

Don't worry M.Pettersson will be fine. Usually 30 something Swedes do well here

Only 3 teams have the cap space right now

The point is he's a negative value asset on his contract and like i said in my original post you're not trading him right now as a depressed asset...would be a poor decision

And yet several teams tried to acquire him, including Carolina.

Soucy is from Alberta and has spent his career exclusively with Western Conference teams, wonder if he'd be willing to waive to one of the shittier Pacific teams (Seattle, Anaheim, SJ).
He strikes me as a Travis Hamonic type that might bounce around the western Canadian teams (CGY, WPG, EDM).

I'd bet soucy would look much better playing 3rd pair mins

So they pretty much knew they'd be getting a 1st in a JT or EP trade.. why not use their own 1st for this M.Pettersson deal months ago, and actually ice a serious roster for a while?

Now the D looks solid on paper, but who cares? Forward group looks like a tank effort, and they are well on their way to missing the playoffs.

Team as of right now isn't hurting on the cap, I would keep Soucy and try him with DP. If Mancini doesn't work out, you are right back to Juulsen as a regular.

Jeeesh settle down....i literally was saying don't trade him. That should be seen as a complement not a shot

I like most around here understand he will bounce back but it's also completely understandable to question whether he is worth what he's getting paid when he does and whether that looks like more of the same mercurial 68pts-80pt C/W or closer to the 100pt one.
Whether he can ever get and stay healthy and be able to play through bumps and bruises.
Whether his head butting with Miller and getting called out by his Coach and GM is indeed a bit of a Patrick Laine sized red flag.
Whether 1 year of production that would match closely what he's getting paid was an anomaly or not.

He's a good player but so is Connor Garland.

I'm just laughing at the idea of moving Pettersson if you have the slightest feeling he's gonna spike back up. If you don't your still getting fresh start talent seeker GMs who will bet on this horse. If you wait and he gets NMC control and he still is a 60-80pt player you're screwed.
