Here's the full Friedman quote:
Starts at 14:35: The FAN Hockey Show
Basically the usual Friedman hedging but Brough wasn't pulling a Taj here.
So basically Friedman just using common sense like the rest of us. No real news at all.
More like upset at the stupidity of the M.Pettersson trade. If he signs 4-5yrs or less at a reasonable cap hit then i will rescind my anger. But why would he do that? He's got the teams balls in a vice? Was there a reason they couldn't just sign him as a UFA at seasons end and not burn a mid round 1st? Either way it was poorly timed and without a good contract it's a disaster
I get the Miller thing....as much as it hurts to hear our team is a bunch of pansies it had to happen so we could keep Petey happy.
Chytil Mancini 1st is a decent return given the 12-22 range of pick and circumstances. That pick had some serious value to try and get back a quality top6C that meets the age range of Hughes/Pettersson. Chytil is a good stop gap top6 at the right age. Mancini has some RD3 value and was a nice add on given they refused to move off Schneider
Here's the problem and most of you guys are in a whole lot of denial when it comes to how far off this team is now. Our top line is mostly a cruel joke right now as a Contender. To make it stranger people are clamouring for a Boeser trade. The only guy who has looked top line worthy in the last 2 yrs and is younger than M.Pettersson.
M.Pettersson fits what we needed "prior" to trading Miller. Once we moved off Miller the smart play was to accumulate draft picks and futures and use them at max currency at the draft to make a splash for a big fish. 26 or younger not someone close to 30 at his apex of earnings and about to slide as a player.
Chytil is looking like another Brandon Sutter acquisition. You do realize he played 10 games last year? His best year is 45pts and is turning 26.
If you can get some return value and flip him to another team for a better or just more durable player in a package you do it. You're right though why would Buffalo do it unless Cozens contract gives them worries and his status is not all happy and good which might be the case. If so and they think Chytil and Kulich might have some chemistry and the 2yrs vs 7yrs is more attractive you never know especially if you had a couple 1st round picks to dangle and could sweeten the pot with maybe a guy like Hoglander or even O'Connor .
This whole year has reminded me of the Tortz era. Miller is essentially Kesler and the return of Chytil Mancini 1st was essentially Bonino Sbisa 1st.
The 1st that could have been McCann or a good young player was just pissed away on a UFA to be.
Demko has become Luongo. Lots of malcontent rumours and wanting out ground swell. We almost cannot sign him at what he will want so he will head to his Florida and O'Connor is Shawn Matthias.
It's just the same stay competitive dog shit excuse to keep individual players happy. Refusing to accept that your not a real contender and far from it. Refusing to make the Logo the most important thing.
I guess the only silver lining here is we have 3 blue chip prospects and Hughes Pettersson are 25/26 not 33/34 like the Sedins were so a quick retool is a possibility but damn why the hasty decisions to blow that 1st rounder when better more long term solutions will come available
Well I agree on the overall sentiment but surely you knew we were never going to rebuild or make that pick ourselves without trying to turn it into a now player. Obviously, you've seen the plan and the pressure to add a defenseman of this sort all year long.
I agree in the sense that it's a lot to pay for M.Petterson, although he looks to fit like a glove. Exactly what we need, a steady, calm, defensive minute muncher behind #43. I was hoping we could sign him for 4-5 years at just under $6 mil. With the numbers being thrown around I am also a little dicey. It's hard to acquire defenseman though. Easier said then done. The market is fierce. One thing this does is set our D up for the foreseeable future. Not a bad thing if you're intending on trying to win some hockey games.
I also realize this a middle of the road team but I'm in favor of moving Boeser as well. I don't see his contract being any good for our team moving forward. Of course he needs to be replaced somehow. I find there is a big difference between an aging Boeser, and a 29-24 year old M.Petterson. Boeser will age out far quicker imo.
I get you're upset at the state of affairs. That's hockey, it's a struggle but I like that we've turned the corner on the whole debacle after this trade. Upwards and onwards. I hope we continue to get younger and faster. I liked the vibe on the team the other night. At least they played like a group committed to each other.
