Value in the M.Pettersson deal starting to look pretty good to me. So hard to get reliable top-4D these days.

get him locked in

It will be interesting.

Right now you have Hughes-Pettersson-Forbort at LHD who are clearly ahead of Soucy (as much as Pettersson probably deserves to play in some fashion, I'm not expecting it until next year) so either Soucy is going to have to switch to LD in Juulsen's spot, which is something the coaching staff has been loath to do, or he's going to be sitting.
i mean he has a ntc but that doesn't mean he can't be traded if we tell him he is no longer needed.

If you believe the internet rumors, he got into a physical altercation (or attempted to) with a member of the coaching staff.

No way to know it's true unless someone involved comes out and says so, but that'll likely never happen. So read my post and then here comes the choo-choo train of a major grain of salt to take with it.

i also heard he basically threatened to quit the team if he was benched again and management called his bluff and sent him home

So Miller took a leave of absence because he got benched during the game against Nashville. Wow. A month away because your ego taken a bit of a hit. That's ridiculous and no better than coming to camp out of shape. Seems like Pettersson and Miller need to take a longer look in the mirror.

who said that?

Friedman.

That's not what Friedman said. He said he had different sources telling him different things that lead to the leave of absence after the Nashville game.

i like the idea of going after players like macelli and fiala who have fallen out of favor but those are just bandaids. this team isn't going anywhere without some elite talent at forward

they need to horde assets for a big swing on a guy who can come in and carry the load offensively. i have no idea who that is though

I think some of it is his tendonitis, but a lot of it is probably just systematic and mental. You could see it against Detroit; there are times Pettersson is just waiting for something to happen and is overthinking the play because Tocchet's system makes the game hard instead of easy. He was simply probably thinking less when he was in his rookie season and he's putting a lot more mental effort now into trying to make the highest % play in all situations, which leaves him flat-footed.

I think things just snowballed on him. We've all been there before where it seems nothing goes right and it just becomes extremely difficult to breathe almost. He needs to get himself out, but it will take time and support.
  • I believe the quick destruction of Kuz by Tocc had a negative impact on EP. Not only did he lose his #1 winger but made him more conscious of playing the Tocc way (i.e. more hits, dump the puck, net front presence, etc)
  • Forced into signing a contract when he already said he didn't want to talk until the offseason. All the negative media attention was exactly what he didn't want in-season
  • Tendonitis in his knee and the fact that the team didn't support him.
  • Management's very public criticism of him
  • Management asking JT to "toughen him up"
  • Actual feud with JT
I 100% believe that we would still have both him and JT on our team if management/coaching didn't bungle things so badly.

No excuses for bullying but still...if you look from JT's side of things you will probably see a similar list of issues that just snowballed on him (including personal). Management/coaching didn't help.

That's a big if but I agree. Watching the new guys relieved alot of stress for me.
I was never stressed out, annoyed, but not sttessed.
Mgmt keeps hitting home runs and adding almost nothing but players I've liked alot for years, it's literally such a relief.

Yes it is a big if, but he did take two solid hits last night, one from Rasmussen that was hard into the boards.

I was constantly hitting refresh waiting for a trade, now I keeping coming back and refreshing to see if MP3, Lankinen and DOC extensions announced yet, I expect all three anytime, definitely pre tdl.

I have seen those same rumors flying around, but none from anything remotely close to a credible source, so I've intentionally not spoken about them.

It seems like a good fit from both sides so gives everyone incentive to be reasonable. I've pencilled in the same contract as Hronek.
I think if you look at some comparable contracts it'll likely be a 5-6 year deal in the $5.5M to $6M range

Here's a few (keep in mind MP will be 29 in May):

Esa Lindell 5 year $5.25M per (age 31 when extension starts)
Adam Larsson 4 year $5.25M per (age 33 when extension starts)
Brandon Montour 7 year $7.14M per (age 30 when deal starts)
Brady Skjei 7 year $7.0M per (age 30 when deal starts)
Jaccob Slavin 8 year $6.4M per (age 31 when extension starts)
Matt Roy 6 year $5.75M per (age 29 when deal starts and a good comparable)
Brett Pesce 6 year $5.5M per (age 30 when deal starts and a good comparable)
Nikita Zadorov 6 year $5.0M (age 29 when deal starts)

My guess (based on the above) is a 6 year deal in the ~$5.5M per year (AFP Analytics projected 5 year $5.85M).

There's a few different rumors floating around.

We will never know unless a player wants to get embroiled in backlash or blacklisted. There's a code across most pro-sports to not speak of issues in locker rooms. You can talk about incidents that were captured on camera or matters that were publicized but behind the scenes stuff is not up for public discussion.

That said, I for sure thought an ex-player would eventually leak what happened in the dressing room back in 05-06 because there was some pretty damning stuff that was rumored and you had numerous personalities that had massive egos. Still nothing after 18-19 years.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

If he starts being a regular healthy scratch, odds are pretty decent he'll see the writing on the wall and be willing to waive at the deadline if asked.
Replacing Soucey with DP will save us like 2M. More money for Allvin's UFA shopping spree.

With the value of Dmen right now wouldn't be surprised if we could get a 3rd for Soucy.

At the deadline, all sorts of depth defensemen go flying around. They're usually a valued commodity. Soucy, Forbort, heck even Juulsen, would probably be sought after. I don't know about a 3rd round pick, but some form of late pick and/or a middling prospect or journeyman is usually a going rate.

No.....but I've never seen a management group hang out its star players to dry like the Canucks have done this season.

The Mavericks fumble of Doncic is unparalleled in sports. Nothing else tops it, not even the Gretzky trade. There are players you simply do not f*** around with, and he is one of them. The owners simply didn't want to pay his contract, and failed to realize that he f***ing is that franchise. Just like Hughes is ours.
