A brief excerpt from Patrick Johnston last Saturday confirming the Canucks are still interested in Rantanen

We begin this column with duelling takes from sources.

Source one says, yes, the Canucks have Mikko Rantanen ambitions.
Source two says, good luck, the Hurricanes are committed to re-signing Rantanen.
...
Anyway, if Rantanen somehow doesn’t sign by the deadline do not be surprised if something comes up with him and Vancouver. There’s a very, very small chance of this happening.

rantanen has been very good for carolina. puck just isn't going in

swapping him for pettersson makes no sense to me because it would leave the canucks with chytil and blueger at c (and no, rantanen isn't going to play c) but the canucks should pursue him in free agency if he's open to signing here

I think the only sliver of reasoning for a Rantanen-to-Vancouver trade is that the two managers clearly are comfortable dealing with each other and have nearly made major trades each of the last two seasons.

I suspect from Carolina's perspective—they are thinking "well, there's always Vancouver" as a back-up plan.

According to some the Devils have kicked the tires on Pettersson recently

Issue is there isnt one player of significance that would be going back. Dawson Mercer would be the best roster player the Devils could offer lol

Obviously itd be a stacked package of futures but... is that really what Vancouver wants? Or are they seriously that desperate to move on before his NMC kicks in?

Weirdly enough NJ can afford his caphit without any cap dumps needed

Edit: unless its a three-way deal for a center for VAN? Cozens or somebody?

If that's Cam's source then I question the validity of this "rumour".

Also if Rantanen is struggling to produce in Carolina away from MacKinnon, why do they think he would produce well here without any 1st line centres?

And this doesn't even account for the fact he's an upcoming UFA and will be asking for a king's ransom, or if he's even willing to sign here...once again without a 1st line centre...
Tocchet--we love your offense but now we want you to play defense. That's how we play here.Low scoring dump and chase shit hockey. But you will love the city.@to any player we aquire..

We have all the cap space in the world right now. We'd be fools not to weaponize it.

meh. detroit got a late 4th for retaining 1.3m on gourde. i don't think cap space is the commodity it once was

i think a lot of teams are gonna be left with a ton of cap space this summer (relative to what we've been used to the last few years) because there'll be so much money chasing so few players. it'll take a few years before there's been enough contract turnover that most teams are spending to the cap again

Only issue is we only have 1 retention spot left. Be nice to have 1 for BB6 + 1 to help facilitate a deal.

Does leave us as an option to dump some medium term salary, as long as it's with a useful player.

Slow day for Canucks rumors though.

Will be interesting to see how this one goes. My feeling is that he’s still a Canuck after the deadline.

That sounds about right. TDL is 0900 tomorrow PST right?

Unless a tsunami of deals pour in tomorrow morning, I'd say this has been one of the most whimpering and underwhelming TDL's I've ever seen, and that's not just limited to the Orcas.
