This is not likely at all. Even if you suck enough (which will be borderline impossible if you're playing the majority of our defencemen) and win the lottery, the majority of 1st overalls are not franchise centers. In the last 5 years (2020-2024), Celebrini has been the only 1st overall to look like a true building block. Never mind the fact that we're going to need to find another franchise defenceman if we trade Hughes.
Not watching other teams? Bedard? Power, JHughes. If not franchise then stars and most teams don't have a franchise player at all.
EP40 is no where near a franchise player even the last 100+ games more like 139th in rankings this year.

But the star players/centers on most team all come through the draft.

Name 3 that came via a trade? I am ready to embarrassed.

Just to entertain the idea let's say Pettersson goes to the Isles. Rumors seem like Dobson would be the return coming back. However that makes no sense for the Nucks. We would probably have the best D corps in the entire league but the worst forward corps. So obviously we would be flipping Dobson. So what young centres are available for Dobson? I just can't see it happening.

I dunno, that seems a bit of a stretch. They've been linked to Dobson for a while. I think if this actually happens it'll have to be EP40 + D for C + D in some capacity.

Bedard is a skill winger who clearly cannot drag a franchise out of the basement. Chicago is going to need to add a 1C and 1D to even stand a chance. Power is trending to be a 2/3D. And both of those players are weird ones to mention since their teams are still awful. J. Hughes is great but that franchise needed multiple lottery wins to get where they are today.

I never said it was likely for a franchise C to come to us in a trade. If anything, I said the opposite.

There is no clear/obvious path to becoming a contender if we are getting this level of play from Pettersson. I want this team to do whatever they can to build around and retain Hughes, and that might have to be rolling with a more unconventional roster construction (2010s Nashville, 2024 Boston) until they can find a better solution at the C position. Tanking again is terrible for the business/brand and has major risk associated with it, and the only way I want that to happen is if Quinn Hughes forces his way out.

Trading for Dobson seems so counter productive.

Hughes is getting all the prime powerplay time and offensive opportunities.

Dobson is an RFA due for a raise. AFP analytics has it at 10.5m, which seems high.

So in theory we're going to trade Hronek at 7.25m for Dobson at 9m? Is the difference that much given the circumstances he'd be traded into?

(The caveat is if the plan is to acquire a Hughes replacement.)

The Canucks top 3 defenders are set, assets are better used elsewhere.

that Isles trade makes no sense and feels woefully short sighted. i don't believe it.

like simple question is who is going to play center? lmao.

still have my eye on Boeser.

Only makes sense if they plan to flip him.

Could see the Canucks flipping him for a centre.

the only fit i see for a trade with the isles is lou on the other side of it being ready to overpay. it would be a very pragmatic trade lacking sizzle if we made it.

weeding through the possibilities.

there has to be a respectable 2 way centre who can play top 6 coming back. i would assume we'd get pageau if the isles are trying to extend nelson. barzal is hurt and can't win faceoffs. horvat would be too weird and has an nmc.

the isles first rounder could be pretraded elsewhere i guess.

on the wing, holmstrom is swedish and fits if they think he is ready. that's all i got.

on defence it has to be rhd. i think pulock or maybe mayfield unless the contract term scares us off. dobson makes zero sense to me simply because he won't see pp1 and he needs to be your pp1 guy to justify that cap hit. i am also not convinced hughes needs a defensive partner who thinks offence first. i think hughes needs a complimentary high skill 2-way partner who looks to get the puck to hughes. also, he's not doing badly with hronek.

from the prospect pile, we would have seen a lot of eiserman while tracking willander. maybe we like him. otherwise, danny nelson potentially gives us a future middle 6 centre.

People keep saying this, but Hughes and Dobson play opposite sides. They could easily both be on PP1.

How many teams run a 2 defender powerplay?

Edit. Carolina, NYI, Tampa run 2 defenders on their first unit powerplay.

dobson then flipped for center help?

Or you run with Barzel and Chytil and see what the D looks like with

Hughes Hronek
M Pettersson Dobson
E Pettersson Myers

The answer is not "zero" or it's "never been done".

True, but if only 3 teams out of 32 are doing it, there's something to that.

Why did every team adopt the drop pass entry that frustrates fans? Because it works. 4 forwards and 1 defender works. Some teams actually run 5 forwards. It's not like it couldn't work though.

I could see a three team trade where the Canucks trade Pettersson for Dobson but route him to another team.
Either that or it’s actually Barzal coming back, which could make sense given he’s been unhappy lately, but he’d either have to be back after 4 nations break or we’d be punting the season.

This is one of the only legit offers I’ve seen.

If you could flip Dobson for another good centre.

Barzal
chytil

The market for Dobson should be massive but I’m not sure which teams would be interested.
yea, i can see dobson being part of the deal for pettersson but not him ending up here.
they need to shore up the top 6, defence is fine

Honestly I’m at the point where even if Pettersson bounces back, I want him gone. His cry baby attitude has gotten old.

I want guys who want to be Canucks. I’m sick of him.
