This EP injury stuff is fluff IMO...if he was actually injured he'd be out of the lineup, he's not helping anything by playing right now if he's injured and needs time to heal, he's too valuable of an investment to the organization to risk his health...if none of EP40 himself, the medical staff, the coaching staff and management haven't pulled him for medical issues, he doesn't have any. He's either damaged goods now or is having an epic confidence meltdown.

Fluff lol?

He is likely over tendinitis sure, but that doesnt change the fact he didnt/couldnt train all summer and add strength.

NHLers spend the off-season building and gaining strength. During the season, with the amount of games there are, its impossible to build strength. In season is all about maintaining the strength you built during the off-season.

Pettersson was not able to do that this off-season and it is showing. Just like its showing that Joshua wasnt able to train much this off-season either. Same with Demko.

I suspect that Ep40 is going to to be able to properly train this summer and will come guns a blazing next Fall.

Unfortunately, this is probably the best version of Elias were going to get this season.

I hope management isnt short sighted and actually see whats going on.

Sorry but thats not accurate...he did train in the summer, but he had to alter his training because of the knee.

Did Pettersson's tendinitis get better over the summer? Well, yes and no.

Pettersson admitted to Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre that the injury hasn't fully gone away, saying, "I still feel it sometimes." After the first practice at training camp, Pettersson said that it affected his offseason training.

"I had a good summer. It was a little different — I had to train around my knee injury but I feel great," said Pettersson. "It's like a nagging injury, it doesn't want to go away easily, but we figured out a way to work around it."

In other words, the tendinitis is still there for Pettersson but he and the medical staff he worked with have ways of managing it. He did not seem overly worried about the injury or that it would hold him back in any way.

"I don't feel any pain right now or after [practice]," he said. "It's not a big thing."

From September 24th, 2024...if this was still an active issue it would be addressed IMO.

Whatever EP40's problems are, he and they need to figure it out quick, but it appears there may be some confusion or miscommunication. From Patrick Johnston on January 30.

Canucks Numbers: Here's why Elias Pettersson is struggling, he's shooting less, skating slower

A source told Postmedia that Pettersson isn’t dealing with an injury this year, so his reduced top speed is a bit of a mystery. Pettersson has never been one to admit in-season to dealing with injuries, so an explanation from him hasn’t exactly been forthcoming.

Skating bursts and edge data doesn't help us explain the problem.

If his problem is confidence he may be hesitating to that burst of speed and finding holes on the ice. A lack of confidence changes your entire perception of what makes you successful on the ice.

If his problem is a lingering injury he may be hesitating from the pain. A lingering injury changes your physical limitations. An injury to his leg could effect other mechanical limitations such as his shot because of a difference in balance, etc.

We cannot definitively say which of these is causing the problem. Perhaps it's a combination of both. But citing edge data and stats that show his top speeds etc. only show that he's not the same. If your logic reduces this to only being an injury, you must believe these players are robots.

Pettersson didn't just forget how to skate...

Some players can have electric starts to their career and then flatline or regress. I always wonder if he simply peaked at a young age and is at best a 50-60 point C. It's always a possibility. Joe Juneau and Eric Staal didn't come close to replicating their success in their early years.

I've known pro-soccer players who randomly hit a wall at age 25.

It also jives with management/Tocc's insistence that there is no injury. There might not actually be anymore, but the impact of the injury (poor offseason training) is obviously lingering.

I get what you are saying, but it also doesn't really add up. Because Allvin has called out Pettersson twice for essentially not meeting expectations, and in the first call out, specifically mentioning preparation. If Allvin knew that Pettersson wasn't able to train as hard or as effectively because of the patellar tendinitis, then it would make no sense for Allvin to publicly call out his franchise centre for essentially not putting in enough effort into off season training.

Plus, Allvin has never limited his criticism of Pettersson to just off season training. Its been more general. And in fact, Allivin would have lots of information regarding Pettersson's in-season preparation/training/practice, etc., rather than whatever Pettersson is doing in the off season, so perhaps its more likely that Allvin's criticism was directed to inseason preparation.

Players play injured all the time, their performance drops but so long as they are better than what's left and the injury still allows it they play through it.

As for Petterson management and coaching are not going to sit Petterson if they think he is helping their playoff hopes. A 60 point player is better than anything on the farm.

They are in year #1 of a $92.8m contract...one they will be firmly tied to after this season when his NMC kicks in, I think they can give him some time off if he was actually injured, to make sure their investment doesn't go down the toilet as it seems to be doing at the moment.

Not to mention the support he provided to our defense squad (with Hronek out injured, to boot).

I dunno. Management very frequently puts a lot of narratives out there specifically to paint themselves in a better light or to save face. A very common occurrence in the Allvin/JR era.

Petey's preparation might be poor, or it might not be. I don't want to take them at face value though.

The fact that Aatu Raty has been skating better than Pettersson should be a huge concern

DeBrusk was pretty consistently high in edge skating data before this year, there's definitely a team environment issue. Whether it's the defense struggling to transition the puck or the system itself. It's not like Debrusk was playing with a high flying Bruins team with a stacked blueline so it makes you wonder if it is the system.

Everyone speculating has never had tendonitis. Had it in my elbow and it sucks, rested for a whole year and it still bothers me.

I kind of get what you are saying there, and I am definitely not going to assume that everything management says or does makes sense. But it really makes zero sense for them to unreasonably publicly call out their franchise centre who they just signed to a mega deal. They are just going to end up pissing him off if the reasons for his poor play are predominately caused by injury. Plus, they look bad here too, because they are the ones who signed him. If the reason for his poor play was mostly (or even significantly) caused by injury, then I think both management and Pettersson stand to gain by getting that narrative out there. But we have seen nothing like that.

I think Allvin's public remarks were meant to motivate Pettersson. And the fact that they made these remarks almost seems to suggest that they have tried other things to motivate Pettersson that haven't worked.

There is clearly an issue. He looks slower and weaker than he ever has (including his rookie year). Whether it's because he couldn't do the work, or simply didn't do the work is anyone's guess, but considering how pissed the organization is with him, and all the trade rumors, I'd lean towards the latter.

Assuming he isn't traded, I wonder if he's going to stick around town this summer and train locally.

There's also benefitting from being the best player on an average team vs the team getting better and suddenly there are options and you have competition and your offensive output gets cannibalized.

Facts

Some people will now go into conniptions over this
We're not allowed to point out Petey is suffering an on-going injury, but by the same standard will also insist Miller was on leave for entirely banal reasons in November that had nothing to do with why they were motivated to trade him (also offering that "Miller was clearly injured, why didn't they just say so?"). 🥱

without double standards, we'd have no standards at all.

You can point it out, but it doesn't make it fact...its speculation.
