It's preferrable because it shifts the pressure onto other GMs to make something work pre-TDL.

Miller wants NYR, Drury we know wants him, but Drury was bold enough to ask for retention. Why? That's a GM that knows VAN is in a bind. Dolan knows this too. And so, waiting inevitably erodes VAN's position further and NYR gets their man... Unless, JR drags this out to the point where the suitors are not just NYR, and both NYR and Miller lose out on a run together.

Dolan will not be happy with Drury then. Further, Miller may abandon NYR as the optimal destination. Everyone will have to reassess the landscape.

If JR confuses the message from "we can't fix this internally" to "we'll trade Miller at the right price"... His posturing immediately loses any weight. Without acknowledging what is already apparent, he appears insincere . Without sincerity, nobody will or should care what he says.
Last time we tried to outwait the NYR's with a prime JTM with 2 playoff runs at $5.25m, they decided to hang on to a 3rd pairing D (Schneider) instead of caving, wasting a few years of Panarin/Shersterkin's prime, and we ended up extending JT.

Now we are dealing with an older, more expensive JTM, I'm not sure outwaiting them is possible. Last time it ended up being a lose-lose situation for both franchises, I think it will again be the same this time.

Oh Christ. A second Rutherford interview has struck the towers.
Seems he's emphasizing key points
  • I don't have to trade these players
  • If it doesn't make sense for us, we won't.
So, reading between the lines... This is all just trade posturing. The implication he's making is to trade partners is 'the only way you're going to acquire either of these players is if you offer something that makes sense to us.'

Everything he says here sounds very reasonable. Nothing about the situation is a secret anymore so there’s no use denying it. Miller and Pettersson need to fix whatever their issue is and find a solution for the sake of the chemistry in the room or the next step would be a trade for the sake of the rest of the players on the team.

I’ve always liked both Byram and Cozens. But I still think we give up the best player in a Petey trade, and we’ll regret it for a long time.

To me the question isn't about EP40's upside but whether we are ever going to see that player in Vancouver again. We're coming up on a calendar year of play ranging from "ok-ish" to "completely invisible" including a playoff run where the team was begging for someone to step up and be an impact player.

There are a lot of good pieces on this team, but we aren't going to win with an $11M pumpkin on the roster. If you don't think EP40 can be anything more than that here (and to be frank, I don't), the only rational move is to deal him ASAP for the best players you can get in positions of need, even if those players have a lower ceiling.

It's a team game. Pettersson isn't a tennis player or a golfer. Being ultra sensitive isn't something that a team should have to tip-toe around, just like they shouldn't have to tip-toe around an admitted asshole.

Both are at fault here and it is ridiculous to treat Pettersson like some abused step-child.

I have absolutely no time for "it's your fault you reacting badly to the asshole being asshole to you," defense. Lived it to many times. It leads to super toxic environments and always absolves and designed to absolve the instigator.

Before this goal, Dylan Cozens had more 5v5 points than any Canucks forward. He still does but now it's even more.
Apparently Cozens has been an awful PP producer. He's 363 out of 372 players who've had PP ice time this year at 0.999 P/60 on the PP (funny enough Owen Power is 372 although he's on unit 2 with 1:49 average TOI).

@MS brought this up a few days ago. Both have been good EV producers this season but are struggling on the PP. I can understand betting on Cozens PP production increasing and rounding out his came to be an all-situations #2 centre. Just not at his current cap hit.

Honestly, after all this, I am sick and tired of BOTH these guys.

What happened to playing for the crest? Is that not a thing anymore? Unless behind the scenes something crazy vindictive happened... For the love of God, grow up, stop being so immature, and work together for a common goal a goal you guys were close to pushing for just LAST season.

Pettersson needs to take criticism better, and JT Miller needs to stop talking so much crap apparently in the dressing room that it's downright pushing people away, stop being an asshole. This is the NHL; you are getting paid a stupid amount of money.

This is your job, this is your pride for the jersey. Canucks fans have supported you guys through this crap, chanting JT Miller's name 1,000,000,000 times and chanted "let's go Petey" when he was just dreadful for months.

This is honestly becoming a joke and if you can't figure it out because of your selfishness and hate for each other, both of you pack your crap and find another team, trade both and tell Quinn what he wants, and communicate the entire way through.

Update: I calmed down a bit, but this whole situation is so annoying, I feel we need too trade both our Star Centers over this, which is depressing as hell man, We were so close last year

the thing that bothers me with "these are two adults, why can't they got along!" when it's almost certainty one asshole being an asshole to a normal guy whose only issue is he constantly has to endure with the asshole being an asshole to them.

Yeah, this seems like what happened with Wheeler and Laine. Some people are f***ed in the head and get pleasure out of abusing others.

Janick Hansen was just on the radio and said it's not a bullying situation, if there was any sort of bullying situation, the players and org would handle it internally, no question.

They lost more by not doing the deal.

The same will happen again, and perhaps this time, everyone can put NYR as a destination to bed and move onto another team.

Boston isn't going to want to fall out of the playoff race. They have space for Miller.

The team I can't figure is DET: Miller is almost exactly what they need. Where are they?

Yzerman just around the periphery and not being heavy in the mix speaks volumes here, imo.

The only reason I can see for doing this is they're going to trade Pettersson, and they're getting out ahead on the damage control because they know this will be extremely unpopular with a not-insignificant portion of the fanbase.
I disagree one hundred percent. You don't sell low on a franchise player at 26 and say you 'might not even get a 2nd line center' in the trade.

You do that for a 31 year old playoff hero with a lot of baggage and a contract that likely isn't going to age well.

The former would be franchise destroying. The latter may be prudent long term, but the emotional ties to J.T. for the fanbase will mean that there is a large reaction at first and histrionics from some portion of the fan base.
