Who cares. Maximize assets. Trading centers for centers is not a thing. Convert them to tradeable currency. Then buy what you need
The problem is buying a 1C is extremely hard to do. Over the last 10 years we’ve had what a handful of 1C get traded/signed as UFA?

Looking around the league who would even potentially be available?

It’s why you can see a petey trade almost needs you to bring back the future 1C for it to work cuz the miller trade ain’t gonna do that.

Just feels like he's putting as much pressure on the two players as he can to figure it out, before he trades one for less than he wants. Him confirming it to the media will make it a field day any time they're in front of a mic since now they can bring it up at any time. Which might be what he wants because everything else has failed.

Yep I think they both want to stay and this is just simply saying you guys want to stay figure it the f*** out I have no problem solving it myself

Fully agreed. While generally I agree with the idea, top end centres and defencemen are near impossible to get. Eichel is the only big name to move in recent years, so unless you hit the jackpot and unearth a diamond in the rough like Reinhart or Strome, you might be waiting a long time, time the Canucks don’t have.

This is an insane quote from Rutherford after everything else he said today:

"We'll deal with our team as normal as we can under these circumstances. And it's what I said earlier: If something makes sense for the Canucks (in a trade), we'll take a look at it, and if it doesn't, the players will stay and continue to try to work through this situation."

It makes the VAN-TBL trade for JT Miller even more remarkable. It's amazing that they essentially got his 1C production for only a mid-1st round pick (the player selected with that pick, Shakir Mukhamadullin, has only played 13 career NHL games).

The biggest head-scratcher was when Rutherford was basically asked by reporters: "If you knew they hated each other, why did you sign them both to long-term contracts?"

The answer, if you can call it that, was while they've known for a long time they didn't get along, by retaining both their star players, they were preserving their trade options moving forward....What?

When rival teams know you're being basically 'forced' to sacrifice one of them, how that 'increase' or even 'protect' their trade value? Just another nonsensical chapter in the long-running Canuck soap opera I guess.

interesting. But since we went into the cap era, I think (with no actual data to back it up) the most successful teams over multiple years are those that retain picks, or manage to trade player for picks prospects and futures.

The exact opposite of what the Canucks have done.

It’s not bullying but then they also told Miller to go on a LOA and said they were looking forward to him being a better teammate.
I am 100% convinced he was away on anger management training. Total theory, based on nothing but suspicion. But with how detached he came back it made sense to me

Like i said Braden Schneider is the minimum requirement. If they are unwilling to do so, they can't afford Miller.
If they plan to flip futures to upgrade to a better play (a la Hronek) they need a 1st back.

Really enjoyed Drance & Dodd’s lunch hour segments today. Thought they nailed it
Dodd is the most rational and intelligent media member in the market by a pretty wide margin imo. He doesn't rev up the engagement with spicy takes like Drance or the afternoon morons though, so he flies under the radar a little bit.

TBF Miller want expected to be a1c by either side. A big 50-60 point guy was what both sides had in mind. Miller turning into gold was quite the bonus.

Team currently trying to work through the situation:

I have Dodd and PJ as my top two for sure. I think Dodd plays well off of Drance. Sat up there as well for my personal bias as a Chelsea fan and how good he is at dropping nuggets that are pretty telling without like 99% of people picking up on it and circulating it around lol.

Soooo. Let's say we move Miller for lesser pieces.. Who are the top 6 C options in FA? I've only seen Bennet mentioned and I have my doubts he leaves FLA for this tire fire.

I think it is all about striking when the iron is hot. Plenty of Stanley Cup winning teams have spent assets to get impactful players (not rentals) like the way the Canucks acquired JT Miller. Like, look at the most recent winners. They each had a major trade ("purchase") for a long-term roster player prior to their Stanley Cup wins:

Florida traded a 1st for Sam Reinhart.
Colorado traded two 2nds for Devon Toews.
Vegas traded a 1st, Tuch, and Krebs for Jack Eichel.
Tampa traded a 1st for Blake Coleman.
St Louis Traded a 1st, a 2nd, Tage Thompson for Ryan O'Reilly

Yeah I think their plan is to get like 2 1st rounders by trading Brock and Miller and then flip them both in like 1 trade.

What? There is another interview?

The team needs to go completely dark. I don’t care about pre and post game interviews anyway. They’re useless. Nothing of essence is ever said there.

If someone gets traded, we’ll know from the announcement. Otherwise just hit the ice and play.

I think they really have to focus on a young 20’s C who could be a Top 6 C but not yet.

Whether that’s in a EP or JT trade or separately.
