No, it was not.
it was a good gamble IMO, we just never got a chance to see it play out properly because the player got hurt.

I get why they did it though. Mikheyev had absolutely elite wheels and they put him in a position to take a lot of high percentage paint shots.

he was coming off a year where he generated a HDC every 10 minutes of ice time ( 8.5% on the PP, 11% SH) and converted them at over 22% (4 breakaway shorties skew these results). He did this playing mostly with third line players (Kampf and Engvall).

for perspctive, Jake Guentzel (an elite HD shot generator*) had his best season that year and generated a HDC every 9.5 minutes of ice time (21.5% of minutes were on the PP....no appreciable SH TOI) and converted at 13%. 90%+ of those minutes were played with Crosby.

Friedman doing a bunch of Canucks talk on Marek's show today (waiting for Vector summary):

-Sharks were the other team in on Mikheyev, he preferred Chicago.
-Did re-engage Joshua, but it will be tough due to rumoured competition.
-Will circle back on their UFAs post-Mikheyev move to see if something can get done.

San Jose made a lot of sense from the get-go and was my most frequent CapFriendly trade-experiment partner.

Chicago was the other.

Would you rather potentially get some ice with Bedard, or go to the tire fire that is the Sharks? Just asking.

It's not like Celebrini is going to be some scrub, and playing in California has its appeal.

That said, Chicago has long been a popular destination for players, regardless of whether the team is any good - and getting the opportunity to play with Bedard, and the team hopefully being 1-2 years ahead of San Jose's rebuild, likely tipped the scales.

yes naturally after scoring 1 goal assisted by Miller ironically in 60 plus games with Pettersson Mikhayev would choose to play with Bedard

No, it wasn't. And my take then was the same as it is now.

In that offseason, Allvin had very limited cap space available - basically could only afford to make one significant addition. The team was very heavy on the wings already, and the biggest need was on the blueline. He chose to invest the majority of their cap space in Mikheyev, rather than the blueline (and Marino later becomes available, which IMO they should have jumped on). It was a poor decision then.

Leafs fans were always frustrated with Mikheyev's style of play (straight line, sprint down the wing). It doesn't mesh with more skilled, heady players. That's why he looked best with Kampf and Engvall. He's ideal on a third line. If you play him higher, you get frustrated with him. It was too much to invest in a pure third liner back then.

I wonder if Allvin will surprise us with another trade like last year, where he picks up a middle aged player "mid twenties" such as Hronek last year that is entering their prime. With Jakob Chychrun rumored being on the block, Allvin may have interest. These upcoming days will be interesting.

it also directly cost them the 2nd they had to send to chicago to get rid of dickinson

As am I. Who’s their 2nd choice for an elite top 6 winger if they lose out on Guentzel??

It's weird that there is so much Guentzel speculation (both here and across the NHL) and so little Reinhart speculation (again, both here and across the NHL) when Reinhart is younger, had a better season, and is a local kid as opposed to American. Like, it's actually kind of weird that Reinhart isn't the Plan A.

Interestingly, both of Sam Reinhart's brothers have now retired from hockey and a Linkedin search shows that both are living in Vancouver and working for Paul Reinhart's finance company (Vanhart). So he still has a ton of ties and family connections here and is about as local as it gets.

I remember speculation about him wanting a trade "closer to home" before he was traded out of Buffalo. It sounded like he wanted to be on the west coast.

The contract he is likely looking for is likely scary.

There is no other elite winger, and they shouldn't chase/overpay the second tier of guys (i.e. Teravainen, Toffoli, Stephenson, etc.).

Make some other reasonable, conservative bets. A Danton Heinen, William Carrier, or Viktor Arvidsson if he comes cheap. Perhaps throw some very low-cost bets on finding the next Joshua. Just find some competent guys to play in the top-nine.

Next step, try to clear off Poolman's contract. With the cap space available from not capping out, and no longer being in LTIR, they will finally be able to bank cap space and be better placed to make some bigger in-season additions. In-season transactions have shown to to be a strength of the Allvin/Rutherford era.

Shouldn't that outlier conversion and shot generation spike signal a future regression? And if you look at the talent of the player, further outline that it was not sustainable?

It was a bad bet the moment it was signed and they unsurprisingly got burned by it. But now they're out from under and the future could be bright.

Reinhart is going to get massively overpaid and I hope we're nowhere near that.

If we miss on Guentzel then I hope we just bargain bin the wings, try to land another d upgrade and leave some ammo in reserve for in season trades when certain teams seasons fall apart (looking at you Ottawa with Green)

Who do you think would fit better with Petterson?
