Its mind blowing that this FO group still pushing for the playoffs. Sell assets (brock, suter, forbort, soucy if possible) and either flip them for other players now or at the draft.

Keeping Brock & Suter imho is absolutely stupid & Benning like. Shut Petey & Hughes down for the season. Reload at the draft or in the summer for next year there maybe a rfa that has a contentious arbitration or negotiation that might become available via trade

That mandate is given to the FO, they don't have a choice.
This is pretty much how I feel. I completely stopped watching hockey for years because of how bad the Benning era got. Not to mention, my second team being the Habs at the time. Ugh. Hard to justify throwing away three hours to watch a lifeless, boring team lose all the time.

Last season brought that love back, and yet here we are a year later and I'm already skipping out on games again.
The constant short term, shortcut stuff hurts my interest in the team just as badly as the poor results.

I also stopped watching for years but I had fun watching this team from 2019-2020 as the young core emerged. We weren't very good and Benning was doing his idiot things, but he didn't do anything truly catastrophic in that time frame and watching the team grow with elite pieces was fun. There was also a very clear window where more assets would come to fruition and the bad cap would clear.

Then Benning's last year happened, flushing the Horvat window down the toilet.

Then new management took over and instead of applying just a little bit of foresight to give themselves a broad path to a 5+ year window, instead it's been the same immediate gratification, short term shortcut stuff.

Now we're in an enormous mess. Some really bad luck with core players, sure, but that's the thing about shortcuts - by default they have a higher burden of execution and no margin for error.

Fans have to realize that positive change doesn't happen until they stop going to games.
This is a closed market. There is no other major sport in the city to divert fan money. It is the same in most Canadian markets.
Benning didn't get canned until there was almost a fan rebellion, jersey's thrown on the ice and attendance dropped.
The major part of a GM's job is to fill the arena and justify increasing ticket prices.
For some fans the contract values dictate whether the team is good or bad, they get sold on individual players.
If they sign Boeser to 6 yrs at 8 million some fans are happy because they like the "human" story and think he is that valuable, until he isn't.

A media holds management's feet to the fire is critical to team improvement.
The media influences the fan base so if they are saying "next year" a lot of fans buy in.

Focusing on one player is not focusing on what might be a bigger or root problem. Either good or bad.

Fans have to learn to be patient to build a winner.

This isn't a captive group of players now, most have got to FA status.
Most if not all the "star" level players have reached FA status for the first time or will shortly.
There are no guarantee's that any player sticks here.
One of the reason's some players stuck it out here was money, there was a limited amount available but that will change back to previous years of increases.
All the talk about planning and doing any and everything to keep Hughes here ignores the player's interest. Just because a fan doesn't have a choice of which sport to support doesn't mean a player doesn't have a choice of where to play once they reach FA.

There are lots of intangibles every year but some are known and/or can be planned out years ahead of time.

The Canucks weren't nearly as good a team as they looked last season. Nor are they as bad as they've looked at times this season.

They're in the 'mushy middle' with basically one superstar left in their lineup in Quinn Hughes. EP40, Miller and Demko used to be in that category.....but not this season for a variety of reasons.

So a full tear-down and rebuild simply isn't in the cards--even if a portion of the fan-based is clamoring for it. It simply isn't in Rutherford and Allvin's DNA.

So moving out some expendable pieces at the TDL; continuing to draft some solid prospects; and hope that kids on ELC's like EP25, Wilander, Lekkerimaki and Raty can infill the roster and raise the bar on the blueline and up-front--is really the only way forward.

That's really all Canuck fans can reasonably expect at this point.

Comparing this year to last isn't a standard. One playoffs series in 9 years is.
A tear down needn't be scorched earth or prolonged.
But ALL of the Canuck stars have come through the draft, JTM ended up being a 5 year rental but then those players don't come along very often.
They need REAL youth not the story peddled by the media of this being a real young team.
This team has TWO regular players under 26 yrs old playing on it.
Lekkerimaki isn't enough, Willander isn't enough and then there is no others.
Chytil is damaged goods, one big hit away from having his career done.

Canuck fans should be reasonably willing to do the "Shanaplan" 9 years of making the playoffs after two years of not being good.
Calgary is in a rebuild and they are 1 point behind the Canucks. Their fans are very happy with that team's standings. They have 5 firsts in the next three years and 73 mil of TDL cap space.

Canucks have never done a proper rebuild and never won a cup either.

No Pettersson, no JT Miller, no Demko, no Horvat, no Sedins, no Linden but the team goes on. No Hughes and the team goes on BUT Hughes will get the next super star player maybe at the 2026 draft.
This year sell out just about everything except top picks to get Misa. There will be players they could include in a package. It might be a chance thing but it might not either and how the team is what or how big a difference will it make. The Vancouver Canucks will still be here, the names might change but the team is still here.

For all the hurr durr grass is always greener 'trade Petty for Cozens' folks. Here's a sample of just one post game thread for the Sabres most recent game:

Cozens struggles to make a key pass ... shocking

Why is Krebs getting so much ice? He's not even close to an NHL regular on nearly every other team. He f***ing blows donkey dicks out there.

Who is harder to watch play ... him or Cozens?

Best shift in a while from the Tuch line ... with the ass wipe Cozens off the line, obviously. McLeod is ten times the player.

Jesus Cozens ... what the f*** is wrong with you ?

I can't watch a team with Krebs, Cozens and Tage all on separate lines. The dumbest trio of centers I've ever seen.

He’s a bad hockey player that had a high shooting percentage in a contract year.

It’s all he’s ever been

Yeah - Cozens may make sense as a buy low candidate because he hasn't lived up to his contract and hasn't been a fit with the Sabres. Not gonna give up quality assets for him. Like someone said - maybe Hoglander and a 2nd that they can use to shore up their team.

Shanaplan would be much better if he didn't make a safe first round pick every time. They have developed their players properly at least and weren't rushing.

I talked early this year how Conroy was doing well in Calgary. A top 10 prospect pool and a team that is playing well. They have a terrible contract in Huberdeau and it won't even matter because they have a future.
