Using a potential contributing year for draft picks is a bit misleading. They are assets that can be traded for immediate help and should be thought of as such, it's not like the only alternative is holding whoever they draft in 2026 until 2029

Trade Garland first
Agreed, I think we will need to do both. By the time they sign Hronek and I suspect Z and maybe even re-sign Cole and add a winger for Millers line (I’m hoping it’s Pod). I’m scared to death about what Pettersson might cost).

Absolutely zero chance they trade Hronek. He was their big acquisition last year and has been great with Hughes.

There's speculation then there's just plain fantasy

Im hoping theyre shipping out Juulsen to make room for Bear
Trader Jim gets a bit cra cra sometimes and is a bit of a cowboy. Not saying it will happen, just that the chance ain’t zero.

I think it’s unlikely for us to resign Cole.

Hughes-Tanev
Zadarov - Hronek
Soucy - Bear

Seems like a more balance lineup. Good puck mover and defensive D guy on each pair.

I don’t disagree, and it’s been clear they like the RHD to be right side and the LHD to be Left. But, I think Tanev gets more term and more money than I will be comfortable with and unless we trade for him and get him re-signed before July 1, it won’t happen. I bet he gets 4 x $4.5 or something silly.

I think Cole will leave and chase term/money after. Probably mutual as we look to get younger and likely sign Z for a few years. Find a new stable veteran for cheap-ish.

It seems like he wants to be in Van so maybe we can sign him for 2 years and that will help us ease in Willander.

Reading between the lines, Zadorov is a guy that it makes sense for the Canucks to re-sign if the money and term are reasonable.

There a potentially high turnover looming on the Canucks blueline, with Myers, Freidman and Cole all impending UFA's. Frankly I'd be surprised if any of them are back--although they might consider Myers on a one-year deal for 'show me' kind of money. But he might get more money and term elsewhere.

Obviously the Canucks have some internal candidates amongst the group from Abbotsford, as well their draft picks....but where they at is uncertain. So it looks like another venture into the market for UFA d-men is inevitable for next season.

Of course it's all hindsight, but man, Hronek would have been great to do the old trade and sign (if he was willing) probably would have shaved 1-2 million off his next deal.

I don’t think money is going to be the determining factor for Tyler Myers next season.

His career earnings are north of $64M..Is he going to haggle over 2-3M..?

How far does the Canucks top 8 D have to go to be a contender?

For comparison 2010/11:
Erhoff
Edler
Hamhuis
Bieksa
Salo
Alberts
Rome

2023/24:

Hughes
Hronek
Zadorov
Cole
Soucy
Myers
Juulsen
Friedman

I've been thinking - and I know this is a longer term concern - how are are we possibly going to keep all of Miller, Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes, Hronek and Demko together long term?

Demko and Hughes are locked in for another 2 and 3 seasons after this one respectively, and Hughes's contract likely represents this team's window, but Pettersson and Hronek need an extension this summer and Boeser has 1 year left. Miller of course is signed long term to a very good contract, thankfully.

It's a good problem to have but we have a core of players performing at very high levels. It's hard to keep that together. The Canucks are going to have to make sure their drafting and development is immaculate because they're going to need to fill out the roster with cheap internal options.

It'll be interesting to see how Silovs shows in the NHL. If he's the real deal then maybe letting Demko walk is an option to save cap, though we've seen how important Vasilevskiy is to a team like the Tampa Bay Lightning who also have a high end, expensive core and had every reason to take that option of not paying their goalie, but they didn't.

do what the have been doing with development and sign your depth guys cheaply early. proper succession planning for all 'role' players

should be fine with the big boys as we don't have any true blue chip star/studs coming that'll eat more money. a lot can change in two years as well - and i would make a guess that it's very easy 2 of those guys aren't part of the core in 2-3 years - you just gotta make sure you are sure when you start signing contracts to guys north of 27/28
