With the goalie demand this high in the upcoming off season I see a tiny chance of Miller being booted. Then again, I don't see Miller being much better than Hiller Niemi Lehtonen or Bernier.

Wait, why do I have this feeling that Benning will switch Miller out and take in an even worse goalie with far worse contract...

**** me...

Hiller's already signed a 3yr deal in Switzerland

If the team is out of it next year, then Miller could potentially be moved by the deadline if there is a team out there in need of a stopgap goalie for the playoffs.

Alternatively, if Demko is killing it in the A, they could instead move Markstrom and re-up Miller on a 1 or 2 year deal to mentor/ ease Demko into the league the following year (s).

And I'd be fine with the latter - not only because it happens to make a bit of sense, but also because it would be awesome to see this chicken-with-its-head-cut-off board go absolutely berserk.

What's a backup UFA worth?A 4th? Not much. Not worth trading Markstrom.

That may be the best thing I've read here.

That's how I see Benning picking a D with the first rounder.

?

Miller's 5 on 5 sv% in 2009/10 was 10th out of goalies with >25 GP. If you want to up the GP threshold to 40, he's still only 8th.

Was talking about Bobrovsky in 12-13.

RE: Miller, he was top 5 in evsv% in 09-10 among goalies with >=2500 mins played (so the true starters). On top of that he was top 5 in oppcf% and bottom 5 in cf%, so he was pretty damn good. Jonas Hiller actually had a remarkable season, but I think he was hurt by only playing 59 games and Miller's performance at the olympics.

Yeah, fools! We were all so wrong about the direction the team was headed. The ones preaching patience and extolling the improvements the team was making over the last few seasons were right and this past season made that so clear. You have earned your right to crow :sarcasm:

It would be pretty funny to see a team completely screw over its goaltending based on a goalie looking good in the AHL for a few months. What could possibly go wrong?

/thinks back to Markstrom coming up to the Panthers as a young goaltender after a hot run in the AHL

Because even if he wins those Vezinas I'm sure that all of us will still find something to complain about, it's the Canuck fan way.

Demko could go 16-0 for three years with 16 shut outs and we'll be like "oh he didn't look like he was trying" or "should have given xx backup more starts".

more like 'hockey is too simple. this doesn't have the same vibe as 94.'

This is very true.

Hell, he could go 12-4 in the playoffs, and in the 4 losses the Canucks get shutout 1-0 in each of them, and he'd get the blame. It's disgusting really.

Not to point a finger at you Proto I enjoy your posts.......but has this board become so jaded and delusional it needs to start creating a narrative of "what if" screw ups to feed it's thirst for hating the GM?

Benning has created a succession plan in goal with a veteran decorated starter a highly regarded talented backup that has dominated at every lower level and is reaching prime age and craftily scooped up a goalie that was regarded by many scouts as a middle 1st round talent and has done nothing but show why since. It's really a pretty good situation and a job well done and I'm a Lack fan.

Only if you're dealing with an idiot GM who's willing to move the guy who beat out his $6m starter.

Do you think Lack could still fetch that package today? (im not taking part in a disagreement it just crossed my mind)

You've bought into nonsense...

Here's what the "succession plan" should be. You keep the best goalie you have available - the best combination of quality, cost, and longer term availability. When another goalie proves to be a better combination of quality, cost, and longer term availability... he now becomes the best option, until a better option eventually unseats him.

To make decisions now, based on the idea that Demko will be on the team at some point in the future, is nonsense. Investing that much money into Miller, at the expense of having the difference in Miller and Lack's salary that could have been used to address the defense, is nonsense. Continuing with Miller next season (to become some future mentor to Demko... who may or may not actually become a NHL player), when Markstrom has now shown himself to be at least comparable to Miller (which is a rather average bar), is nonsense.

You are supporting the actions of a jaded and delusional decision maker. No decisions should be made now, based on prospects who may or may not become NHLers one day... What you especially don't do, is give a time frame for when the prospect will be in the NHL, and make decisions around that in the present tense. If Demko is ready to be the best option one day, we will all know... just like we will all know if he's not. To me, that there are some people arguing to keep Miller (and not using his $ elsewhere) because it's a variable in a logical succession plan is a loss of plot from people who have bought into nonsense and fairytales about the "Prince that was Promised". If Demko is the Prince that was Promised, it will become clear, and Demko will be worth making NHL roster decisions around, at that time.
