It doesn't make any sense for the Canucks to not get a center back in return though unless there is a 3 way deal out there.

i'm a CBJ fan who spent weeks saying that david jiricek was going to fetch buium or rossi despite being a distressed asset, only to end up with daemon hunt and picks. (not upset with that, fwiw)
point being… vancouver fans can pine for fantilli or johnson all they want, but this isn't NHL 25 – a $11m+ player who your FO wants to move is not going to fetch those guys – so i am relishing the chance to finally be on the other side of one of these.

Then on the other end of it, Fiala was dealt for Faber who’s now a franchise d man. Fiala can’t hold a candle to Miller or Petey. So it does go both ways and certainly depends on what you’re targeting.

sure, but faber was seen as a good-not-elite prospect at the time, not as a franchise level defenseman. he clearly had talent but his breakout significantly exceeded expectations.
in other words, the parallel here isn't fantilli or johnson… it's cole sillinger.
It would be cool if you all were able to grab him. Is why I popped back in this thread: was going to suggest Columbus as a great fit.
I can’t really pinpoint what you would pay though.
I do think the return is probably going to be a big one; he’s just such a high profile guy, fills a really critical role, and I can’t imagine league wide modesty. I agree with the distress asset valuation but I do think there is still a sizable return despite it.
Vancouver is in such a win now configuration too. I’d find any Petterson deal to be odd if it didn’t have a large hockey trade component. I doubt the deal would be some bluechip prospects and picks, but if the nhl component of the deal is lacking then I think the canucks get to pick from the top shelf.

Interesting that this is your takeaway when the actual professional hockey player who was in the room with them is saying Miller is the one who needs to lay off.

Forget Fantilli, Marchenko, Monahan, Voronkov, KJ, Werenski, Jenner, Mateychuk, Olivier. Not going to happen.
I think Sillinger, Chinakhov, LDBB, 1st round picks, Lindstrom or anyone else would be in play
One team will but if Vancouver is silly enough to play chicken with this and let it get past when the clause is active, they're only going to hurt his trade value. I think the draft is probably the best time to extract the most value but if Vancouver is competing, they're not going to want this to linger so they can move on with whatever their team looks like after a Pettersson trade.

Easy to figure out. Look at their center with and without EP in the mix? It's thin. They most definitely want a center close to EP age or younger but NHL proven.
1/1 offers? I don't see many of them. Maybe Barzal? Who else? I see a lot of teams offering 2 or 3 pieces for EP.

A top four defensemen, specifically a puck mover to help alleviate the load on Hughes and give our forwards someone else to work with. Right now Pettersson plays the least amongst our forwards with Hughes because he's being tasked with babysitting the disaster quartet of Soucy, Myers, Juulsen and Desharnais/Forbort/Brannstrom.
That's it, really. We could use some scoring upfront but it's far and away lower on the list compared to defense.

olivier is going to re-up here at some point so i get why you included him but he wouldn't be an "off the table" guy for pettersson lol.
realistically, the list of guys who can't be in the deal is a small group of untouchables (fantilli, marchenko, KJ, werenski, mateychuk), and a few guys with NTCs (monahan, jenner, severson). lindstrom could either be untouchable on the CBJ end or a no-go on the vancouver end given the injury.
that would leave voronkov as the primary ask + the "guy we'll fight to not include" piece on the CBJ end.
imo something like this would be a good framework for a CBJ/VAN deal:

could also include some kind of conditional 2026 pick as a value-add if the jackets make the playoffs.
don't think this would be the best "win now" offer on the table by any means, but i wouldn't be willing to offer up any of the untouchable guys i mentioned above.

Who says he can't take criticism? Babcock's idea of "criticising" Marner was humiliating him in front of his teammates. Not to say Miller is anywhere close to that bad, but the point is criticism can comes in many different forms.
Some people respond well to "tough love" while others shut down completely. A good leader knows how to balance that. If Miller can't, then he isn't the commander her thinks he is.

My guess is Miller wants to win and wants Pettersson to play harder in the trenches but that's not really his game. I always respected Millers game on the ice but is he a true leader? Not sure about that part. Sometimes, the season just don't play out like you would expect and true character comes out. Or frustration... call it what you wish.
