Who’s asking for a haul here? Nash returned a 4 piece package including two young NHL’ers, a 1st and a prospect. Similar to the Eichel trade really.
If you believe the rumours, Sabres have already inquired about Pettersson.
Yes some players do decline earlier but almost every player reclines in their mid 30’s and EK is proving to be no exception.
Canucks and Sabres fans have had many back and forth regarding Pettersson and there were very few posters that looked negatively on that swap. I don’t need to twist the truth to prove anything to you.

I’d expect a 1st to be added from Nashville but Skjei is pretty damn good. Replace L’Heureux with a different ELC if you like.

They are trading from a position of weakness.
I would not expect a great player back. I think it will either be a scenario where they get another big contract with question marks, or they will get 2-3 roster players when term and maybe some unremarkable futures line a mid to late 1st type prospect.
Or, it will be like the Karlsson return, assuming a team with cap space like Columbus or Utah wants to spend to make a splash. They will get a huge package, but it will be all middling assets, with the prime asset being Vancouver not having to take back equivalent cap+term. Keeping in mind, I mean the Karlsson return as it was projected the day the trade as made, not how it turned out.

You are. That four piece package included nobody that ended up being anything like what you're asking for. The Sabres inquiring can be as simple as doing your due diligence and confirming that what they're asking of you doesn't make sense for you to do so it could be true and still not mean anything. EK's decline doesn't really have anything to do with the concerns that come with anyone trying to acquire Pettersson. He does have a decline risk associated with him and he does have the risk that he may not play with all his heart in certain places. And like I said about the fans, it does not have a shred of relevancy to the topic. Just because they may believe something doesn't mean the team does.
Lol Pettersson is our 2C. How is that a position of weakness?
He's not going anywhere unless it's one of the biggest trade packages of the past 5-8 years.

I didn’t see anything in the OP GM quotes that suggests he’s actually going to get traded. I highly doubt he is. “Anything is possible” goes for every player in the league.
It’s a bit odd, no?. A year ago, along with Hughes, Pettersson was the future in Vancouver. A GM equivocating on whether their young, recently signed long-term, star, cornerstone player, might be traded, is not typical.

I’ve literally said that the Eichel package would be the closest comparable. Young NHL’er, 1st, prospect and a 2nd. If that’s a “haul”, ok then.
Agreed 100% with your last bit here. Just like what you’re arguing means nothing, it’s opinion. This conversation has basically come full circle and hasn’t accomplished anything.

He doesn’t say he might be traded. He was asked if EP could be traded and his response was, “anything was possible” if there was no improvement and the situation seemed hopeless. When asked if an EP trade could be done with that contract he said he had faith in his gm.
I think he’s just lighting a fire under the player. When the talking heads are saying “I have confirmation teams X and Y have made offers, I’ve heard the player is on the block for sure” then I’d be fine with 14 pages of pure fan driven speculation but right not that’s all it is. Fans whose baseline is to be bored and wanting a big trade five minutes after a big trade happens are going bananas because they’ve been fed click bait.

To much weight being given to this bolded part.
Trade to Carolina threat last year was where that concept was tested already. They would not go to the same well with a 11 million dollar player that is dividing the locker room.
What we are witnessing right now is the reverse of when Miller stepped away. Miller now has a chance to show management what Petersson had a chance to do when Miller was away.
The window for change is closing. Do they stick it with a guy that didnt gain any weight or improve his skating? Its serious crossroads time for the organization and reason movement is slow on a trade. One will be moved.
I see Allvin signalling the league with that comment to open up options for improvement. All options on the table.
Personally think if Pettersson stays we need a different coach.
The last thing in world Buffalo needs is more prospects. They're too young already. They need to trade prospects for NHL players. Half the team at the NHL level and AHL level are prospects.
I was going to say… I wouldn’t trade Seider for any of those packages, nor for Pettersson so I’m not sure how this makes sense.

You know every NHL team plays at least 1 game a year in Vancouver, right? Or are you suggest he's being traded back to Sweden or the Canucks are going to have him offed?

Too many under 23 types mentioned in this. If he’s traded, we’re gonna see other players in their post 25 year involved. They’re gonna want a Dylan Larkin in any deal with Detroit for example. That’s why it’s such a hard trade to make for Vancouver, and they’d be much better off trading Miller, even though if I’m into a Game 7, I’ll take Miller 100/100 times.
You don’t want a Wyatt Johnston being the main piece because he and Miller are just too far apart. Limiting the prime years they’d have together, if any.
So they have to find a team who’s going to also be ok with losing a big piece today, hoping their younger players are closer to having multiple Prime years with Pettersson. So a team like Detroit, who Pettersson fits longer with all of their younger players. A deal where they may not be any better immediately following the trade, but will gain another 2-3 years of Pettersson compared to Larkin.
The problem with that example is, nobody truly expects Detroit to trade Larkin.
It’s not an easy deal for the Canucks. Those are the types of things GMs think about. They’re not short-sighted when moving players like Pettersson. You have to find a replacement coming back, that when coupled with Miller, gives them a similar window. Not one player being too young, and when he finally does reach that status 2 years down the line, Miller has now lost a step.
It’s why teams trading the best player in a deal, almost always lose the trade.

Of course the Sabres would give up two such pieces. They list their 1C when Eichel was forced out of town. They need a star 1C. These guys don’t grow on trees. If EP40 is available the Sabres would give up a lot as would all clubs looking for a 1C. Vegas got the Cup because they got Eichel.
