He should not be a captain

Probably wouldn't be on a good team. A team with some veteran leadership would nip his undisciplined play in the bud. He plays a hard physical game but he is probably tired of all the losing and the bullshit. I'd love him on the Canucks.

how Hoglander got a double minor while Stutzle got only two is f***ing bonkers. Just a really stupid f***ing decision by the referees.
Ullmark with the trapper face wash while punches are still being thrown was the most egregious part of this. Third man in rule means this should have been an automatic major and misconduct.

Hughes kicked out and you figure well what else bad can go wrong and forget about a win in this one. But team defied the odds and overcame the absolute idiocy and one-sideness of the officials and came through with a real nice effort.

Good

Joshua - starting to come around. Was big in the play throughout. Made very good plays and passes throughout the game. Be a massive help if keeps this up.

Pettersson - showing his class. Getting Sherwood on his line seems to have helped. Taking some leadership - if having Miller out can lead to that, then that's a positive out of the Miller situation.

Sherwood - some guys develop late and Sherwood is looking like an example. Maybe he is top 6 - looking like that lately.

Garland - another nice effort. Both ways was again top end. Think of Garland and I think of Sherwood - think of Sherwood - think of Garland. Both got huge ice time and a big part of the win was based around them.

Juulsen - no star but best game this season. Hung in and contributed. Given expectations a good game.

de Brusk - beginning to justify his contract and Canuck management's decision to acquire him. Wasn't just the scoring but his all round game. Could easily have got the hat trick.

Hronek - Played near half the game and ended up a +3. Damn vital to the win.

Brannstrom - played 20 important minutes in this game. Looks solid NHL to me.

Suter - needs to be kept at center. Like Blueger, a glue player who checks well and manages the play efficiently.

Lankinan - provided another good effort. Canucks need to find ways to keep players out of his crease. Or maybe get the refs to call blantant inference.

Others

Sasson - didn't seem out of his League through most of his limited play. Has better wheels then Raty or Bains

Hoglander - another tough one. Way too much start and stop hockey. Just can't muster the speed to create anything offensively and rarely in the flow of the play. Overall, the play looks too fast for him and, right now, he can't play a 200 foot game. Could see him waived (he'll get through) to Abby.

Myers - ordinary through most of the game and then had a brutal last few minutes. Needed to show some calmness under pressure and make the simple play.

Best thing out of this game is maybe that Hughes got some rest and will be ready to go in Boston.

Does it matter if he switches off his brain on random critical plays that lead to high danger chances? Until we see him stop doing that for a long stretch, I don't think performances where he keeps doing it can be classified as good.

Because this level of "good" is a player you absolutely cannot rely upon as one of your main 7 D going into the playoffs.

Canucks mostly controlled this game for 56 minutes, as the Sens started to get frustrated and some of their best player took undisciplined penalties.

Then cam the last four minutes. Serious brain-dead plays by both Myers and Soucy, and suddenly the score was 4-3. Tocchet won't be happy with the last two or three minutes, but a win is a win. Now on to Boston.....a homecoming for Heinen and Debrusk.

he is a complementary player

and a terrible choice for captain

He is not a complimentary player whatsoever. At this time he is playing for a tire fire of of an organization. At this time he isn't a good captain but Sidney couldn't captain that team. Brady may yet become a good captain or he may not but he probably needs to get out of Ottawa.

He's a captain playing under Travis Green.

There I said it.

Yeah lol, that would be Benning level of asset management.

Imagine thinking a 23 year old forward who scored 23 goals last season is going to make it through waivers lmao

I don’t think it’s that outlandish.

His contract extension absolutely sucks. I wouldn’t give a thing to take on a $10 million commitment for a bottom-6 guy who sucks defensively and has been mostly terrible for the last 4 years.

Coaching staff needs to wake the f*** up. Stop putting myers and juulsen out in the last moments. Haven't we learned from the playoffs?

Ok, Myers played ok for the 2nd and then started steadily declining again as the game went on. You put him out in a vital moment at the end, I get it. But then he makes the dumbest possible play with tons of time and no pressure....DON'T PUT HIM OUT THERE AGAIN. And definitely don't put Juulsen out there with him...

Also, Hronek was an absolute stud this game and he's not out there at the end?

This coaching staff just can't help themselves, they put Myers out mindlessly and just ignore when he makes dumb decisions. At least be able to read who is playing well in the game and lean on them...

I really get the impression Tocchet's approach is to trust everyone to figure out their own mistakes; the understanding yet firm "Dad" approach if you will. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work. Myers has proven time and again he's decent enough, if not even good, with managed minutes in low pressure situations. But they keep trying to push him. It's baffling after a year now they still can't seem to accept his limitations.

Juulsen though. I don't even know at this point. His leash has to be a ten miles long with how many chances he gets.

On the whole though. We won, and with damn near our entire top end out for one reason or another. Hopefully, this is something for the guys to build off.

Recency bias...he's been inconsistent but you have to remember the stretches where he was maybe the best player on the team and was a one-man forecheck. Not to mention some spectacular skill plays. He's been in a funk so far, but he's too good not to come out of it.

That was in the 2021 bubble where it seemed like only him and Boeser were the ones giving a shit. We are so far removed from that.

To be clear, he absolutely would get picked up. There are a lot of teams devoid of talent and they might just think he needs a change of scenery and a new coach. He's also cheap for this year for them to gamble and see how it goes next year. His buyout is virtually nothing if they want out in 2026.
