He has been playing this way most of the year. He is our MVP this year. Without him and Tanev the team would be lost. They literally are the only thing the team has going for itself on defense. I did not believe Edler could play this good. He is skating well, lighting up players on the other team and making great breakout passes. Probably need to give Tanev alot of credit as he is a great partner at turning the play the opposite way but Edler now seems to have moved beyond the usual Tanev effect and is driving the play himself as well. Right now we have our #1 and #2D we are missing our number 3 and 4 Dman.

100 % agreed. I was really hoping for an Edler turn around last year after John T's words. Kind of felt that there was no chance this year and have been unbelievably convinced of the opposite. Biggest positive story of the year. Just have to back those two up.

I'm calling it...this is the turning point for the season.

So much better to read posts tonight then the last game...

On that note, Re: that comment, I'd like to openly apologize to a certain poster for flipping out last night. I have no right to pull anyone's fan card, not that that was my intention anyways. People can cheer for the team whichever they are so inclined.

Just that post put me over the top and a couple reactionary posts ensued that I could've worded more tactfully or refrained from entirely. I knew it wasn't a good idea to read last night's gdt in my state, lol.

Anyways, good to finally beat the Wings. One of Miller's best games of the season imo. Nice assist into the open net from Henrik for his 200th to seal the deal. Still in the mix playoff-wise.

Horvat showing more offensively tonight than usual, hopefully that's a trend that continues.

Very entertaining game. Good pace.

Unlike some posters, I did like Kassian's effort. Not his best, but okay for a first game back. Did seem to have the positive effect I was hoping for on Matthias, who I thought had his best game in a while.

The reffing left me in total shock. We had six penalties to Detroit's seven. Is that allowed?

For me, this game, along with recent games, likely tells the story of where this team is going this year. Should make the playoffs, although not much of a cushion to ninth place, so not a certainty. The post-season will disappoint those expecting a long run.

One of the biggest weaknesses of this team, that is on display almost every game, is the lopsided puck battles lost. When there is a fight for the puck, the other team more often comes away with possession. Some of this is because we are too often second to the puck. But even when we are there first, the competition still ends up taking possession.

One of the offshoots of this is getting trapped in our own end for extensive periods. The puck goes up the boards, the winger turns it over, the opposition defence takes possession. Watching this repeated through an entire shift is a bit frustrating.

This alone will take us out of contention for any playoff success.

I'll take entertainment over a boring neutral zone trap shut down style. I just think that fans (and management) will have to be patient as the team transitions to younger (and hopefully better) players over the years ahead.

Sbisa and Edler are definitely neck and neck for the "most improved" award. Well... for D men... cuz Burrows and Hansen

I think Edler-Tanev stays together without a doubt. I hope Hamhuis and Bieksa get paired back up, though I see merit for putting Sbisa there instead. ..he's been better than Bieksa for most of this season.

It's hard to say who sits between Stanton and Weber. Honestly, they've both been good. I think Stanton plays.

Stanton is better than Sbisa by a country mile, and there's no way it should even be considered that he comes out of the lineup.

Who cares if it's two empty net goals, he's being rewarded for his good play at least.

I think it speaks volumes that he was on the ice to get those empty net goals. That line shut down the Datsyuk line all night and did so when the net was empty. They played very well last night and to make statements like "PP and EN points" is ridiculous. Yes they scored PP points...how is this a bad thing? Yes they scored empty net goals. How is this a problem?

They had fantastic games along with Edler and Miller. Credit where credit is do.

Agreeing with all the Edler comments. He's been team MVP this year and it's surprising he doesn't have more points because he's jumping up in the play more and getting his shot off. I've noticed that he hasn't been fed one timers and this allows defenders to get in the shooting lane. When Salo was here, many of his goals were one timers and that's what made him lethal (and his tendency to get any shot on net).

who was that much smaller red wing shoving sbisa after the scrum near the end of the game? was that nyquist? sbisa just sort of tried to look tough while backing away. not marchand on daniel, but not what you want to see either.

good on edler though. beast of a game and he almost got the gordie at the end and i think he was game if the refs hadn't jumped in. bieksa's kudos say it all.

Datsyuk's line was not shut down by the twins.

The twins got their shots on the pp and into and empty net. They were good, but they didn't really do much of the shutting down.

Edler and Miller were more influential in this regard.

Anyone sick of Hughson and Simpson doing our games on HNIC?

Hughson has to try so hard not to be a homer even in the light that Simpson rarely has anything good to say about the Canucks.

Tomas Tatar was grabbing sticks and holding them all night trying to draw penalties. If he was on the Canucks he would have pointed it out and tore him a new one. Dirt under the rug for a red wing though.

Benning's guys are gold. Gillis' suck. Duh.

Or vice versa depending on your viewpoint.
I've liked Sbisa as the fifth defenceman and think he's been better than Stanton most of the year.
However the last stretch Stanton has stepped up his game. If he can cut out the unnecessary penalties Stanton could be even better.
I think Weber is the obvious one to sit.

One d-man and goaltender don't do all the shutting down. The Sedin line plseemed to push possession all night 5-on-5. When they were on the ice against the top wing players they certainly battled to a saw off with the top wings players. Given the criticism they receive in theirdefensive games they ought to receive some kudos when they play well in that regard. And unless I'm reading the chart wrong they were double digit corsi winners against the wings top defensive pairing.

I don't. I think being able to make receivable passes instantly makes Stanton the better player. Sbisa has taken some strides here and is playing better than I predicted when he's simplifying.

I've given credit to a lot of benning's guys at different stretches to the season. I try to just view them as Canucks.

I've been just as likely to take shots on gillis acquisitions.

They were outplayed in the first period. They picked it up as the game went on. I'm all for giving them credit for what they did. I just didn't think they did a great job shutting down datsyuk. He condo have had a hattrick if it wasn't for Miller.
They did good things on the PK as well.

I liked watching that game, and it's a quality team but they suit our style.

I liked the physical dimension kassian brought but maybe I'm overstating that because of being s fanboy.

The comment wasn't directed at you but was just a comment to say that there have been both types of posters.
I don't look at players as Gillis or Benning players either. Sbisa has been fine most of the year. Stanton right now is playing the better of the two and has been for a good stretch after struggling earlier on.
I think Sbisa gets the sixth spot over Weber because we need his physicality.

My love for hearing Hughson call these games is tempered by listening to Simpson.

*Miller stops Datysuk in close*
"Yeah, well, you know that Datsyuk didn't get the A-Shot off if he'd tracked it properly."
*Henrik scores the 1st empty netter*
"Well, if he misses that, I gurantee you we have a different outcome to this game. Bad thing to miss." (well he freaking didn't, clown!)

There was a third one that ground my gears, but now I can't remember.

What did he say after Henrik walked the next puck into the net? :naughty:

Ya I can't stand Simpson he always tries to say things so nonchalantly. When Henrik scored his first empty net goal he was going on and on about how dangerous of a play that was and if he missed the open net the icing would have meant Detroit tied the game because Vancouver sucks

I like Both D-man but I think Sbisa has much more potential.. Better wheels better shot.. Both are a pretty big physical presence. Stanton is definitely better between the ears at the moment but Sbisa is YOUNG!! He's developing still!
