I can't believe all this whining on Hendricks being in the shootout. It's basically a lottery with slightly rigged probabilities depending on who you put out there. Then again in 2009 I watched Jarkko Ruutu score twice against Canada in a shootout in the 2009 world championships and he wasn't exactly a known goal scorer or even shootout specialist. On his 3rd attempt he failed. After that I learnt to respect the coaches choices. Often I don't agree with them, but I also realize my choices might not be any better and could be worse. Also the coaches have a lot of information I don't have access to, sometimes that might make a difference. No one else scored either, so Little, Laine, Wheeler or Perrault weren't any better choices than Hendricks in this particular shootout.
This wasn't even a totally left field choice, his career numbers are still pretty good for shootouts and he's had plenty of attempts. Even if most of the goals happened many years ago, it still shows he's no stranger to shootouts and scoring in them.
For all I know Hendricks told Maurice during OT that if there's going to be a shootout, he has a good feeling he'll score if given the chance. Maybe he said it in a manner that convinced Maurice, who went "OK, this kid has the eye of the tiger, I want him out there." And you know what, if that was the reason he was picked for it, I'd be completely fine with that.
