Isn't this what what we wanted Guentzel for?

I don't want to assume he's going to continue to produce like this for the entire year, but what y'all are describing is Guentzel's prime utilization. IMO, anyway.
I mean, yeah. Which is why its kind of shocking that we are seeing it play out to perfection so far with Roslovic.

To be fair, there was a lot else that Guentzel brought to his game. Yes, he had the ability to score, but he also can single handedly dogwalk a defense and create something out of nothing for himself, and he also had an A+ passing game which played extremely well with Aho and Jarvis. Roslo's utilization so far is more pure scorer, hence not having any assists on the year despite being on a line with Svech and Aho. Which, at least for now, is proving that it might be a better overall fit for us, and I did not see that coming.

He has already exceeded my expectations. Hopefully he keeps it up. In fact all of our offseason acquisitions have looked incredible to start the season. Walker is probably the worst of the bunch but he's still been better than any other 3rd pair D guys we've had in like the last 5 years (not counting last year where we legit had 2 2nd pairs).
Interesting onwhat others see.

I feel like Walker has been one of the best acquisitions, fit in seamlessly defensively. I expected a bit more offensively but they have Gostisbehere for that and it’s still very early in season.

I certainly agree he’s a high end 3rd pair guy. I’d expect him to get top 4 minutes next year.

On Roslovic, imagine the Canes may try to lock him up for 2-3yrs with an in-season extension if he keeps this up over the next few months. He’s only 27 so got a few prime years left.

I wasn't totally clear when I said "worst," should've meant compared to meeting my expectations. I think Walker has been rock solid for his role too but he's been about what I expected for the contract we gave him and his past play.

All the other guys have exceeded my expectations so far. Robinson I thought would be an AHLer and he's seamlessly replaced what Noesen provided last year. Roslovic obviously with the goal scoring and speed/forechecking. Ghost I expected to do well like his first short stint here but not quite ppg with 4 goals so far and taking hold of PP1. Carrier has looked amazing as well, although in a lesser role. All of them are outperforming their cap hits, some considerably.

Back to Walker, yes more offense would be nice, and he's taken the most penalties on the team but he has been very solid. I think he's a high end 3rd pair guy getting paid like it. I personally would not be thrilled with him in the top 4, although his skillset in theory would fit very well with Nikishin in the short term. I know some disagree with me but I think Burns will be around quite a bit longer on our top pair, even if not though the solution there isn't Walker or Chatfield and Chatfield basically has 2nd pair RHD locked down so I don't see a path to top 4 for Walker.

I see Burns getting at least a 1 year extension, maybe even two. I just have my doubts that the Canes are going to play two rookies on defense next season, especially because Morrow's defensive game is still pretty raw. Their recent MO with rookies in general has been slow attrition.

I just don’t see Burns getting an extension at 40, going on 41. Even if he’s still playing at a high level now, the drop off is coming soon inevitably at some point.

Also, I’d imagine they’re not too concerned about 2 rookies on the blueline. I doubt they consider Nikishin a “normal” rookie, so Morrow would truly be the 1st yr guy. And depending on injuries, he may get into a games this season.

I see the D shaking out like this next season:

Slavin-Walker
Nikishin-Chatfield
Gostisbehere-Morrow

Yeah, that 3rd pairing might struggle defensively…but I think it could work if they’re given the same treatment that the Gostisbehere-Walker pairing is getting right now.

I think it depends on how deep the Canes can go in the playoffs. If they actually win the Cup, I see Burns going out on top. If they get close but fall short again, I see Burns taking another whack at it and the Canes obliging.
