I actually see Forsberg as a guy that they got for their goaltending depth in case Reimer is godawful. Forsling to me either shocks everyone and fights his way to a job or gets traded/claimed by Ottawa.

Pretty sure Reimer was acquired after Forsberg. I remember thinking at the time that the Reimer acquisition is what Forsberg should have been. Veteran backup with some NHL success.

I see Forsberg as below all of Mrazek, Reimer, and Nedeljkovic.

This Charlotte lineup, though...

Bean-Priskie
Sellgren-Wood
Claesson/Forsling-Lintuniemi
Fitzgerald
Sheppard

Absurd.

Sellgren is almost definitely headed back to Sweden if he doesn't stick with the Canes. And I don't know about any of Claesson, Forsling or McKeown getting claimed off waivers. A team will have to make another guy available to do that and there aren't a lot of teams willing to lose a guy for a player like that. The league is full of fringe talent.

I see Forsling either getting AHLed or getting claimed for Ottawa's tank job. If TVR is LTIRed, which to me is probable, I see McKeown winning the #7 job in camp. Claesson, to me, gets the last spot on the 23-man roster (along with Clark Bishop). This, of course, is fully assuming that no Faulk or Honka trade happens.

If Claesson had a decent chance of getting claimed on waivers, we wouldn't be talking about him signing today.

McKeown, Forsling? I can see an argument for Ottawa, a team with a rash of injuries in camp, or a cap team looking for a cheap D for bottom pair or press box. But I think Claesson will be riding the Piedmont a few times this season.

Nobody wanted Claesson for free so unlikely he gets claimed on waivers. Doubt guys like McKeown or Forsling get claimed either, but there’s always a small chance if an injury occurs or a player disappoints in camp.

LTIR space can't be banked. The more you dip into it, the less flexibility you have later in the season. In the absence of a Faulk trade, to maximize space for the deadline, the Canes should go into the season with a 20 man roster + van Riemsdyk. Use the leftover space (~750k) and then van Riemsdyk's LTIR if injuries necessitate it.

I think it's crazy (in a good way I think mostly, though MSP would likely have something to say about that) that we keep getting these Dmen to sign with us even with a stacked NHL D and a lot of depth in the system. Obviously many different considerations for each of these guys, but Fora, Cajkovsky, Lintuniemi, Priskie, Gardiner, Claesson, de Haan. Very interesting.

McKeown is still pretty young, so I could see a team claiming him. But I don't think I'd lose any sleep if it happened. Same with pretty much of all of our fringe waiver eligible d-men.

I've got nothing to say. This group seems to know what it's doing, so I've got nothing to add. Put it this way, whatever they're telling a guy like Priskie or Claesson to sign here, these guys can see the roster and do basic math. Nobody is forcing anyone to sign a contract. At least, as far as we know.

Obviously, I think Faulk is headed out of town, but I trust this group to do what's best.

The results so far are hard to argue with.

The thing about our roster situation is that they don't have to trade Faulk to get under the cap. They can run a 22-man roster even if TVR doesn't get LTIRed due to Gardiner's bargain cap hit. Canes still have all of the leverage in any Faulk deal.

The thing about Forsberg is that the Charlotte goalie consultant really liked him and felt he was undervalued in the Blackhawks organization. He had a better save % than Ned did with a worse defense in front of him. I truly think the one time where the front office said, "lets make this move and figure it out after" was the Reimer move. Getting rid of Darling was good for the organization, but more importantly, good for Darling. Give Reimer a few games and he potentially becomes tradable or we can bury him in Charlotte. It's an enviable position regardless.

Remember when Dundon said he'd never draft a defenseman in the first round, because you could always trade for one or sign one? And the hockey world ridiculed him for that notion?

This is just Dundon showing off at this point.
Yup, this is exactly what I said when they got Gardiner, and he just keeps proving it over and over. It's great that we're like 12 deep of guys that won't kill us and some teams can barely form a competent top 6 at the NHL level.
