Though it worries me that we've been playing against bad teams. The Isles are average and we won that one in a close 3-2 game that only saw a definitive go-ahead goal with 6 minutes left. Buffalo is the worst team in the league by a mile. Buffalo is worse than Edmonton from seasons past and we played against an AHL goalie tonight and against a team that has lost 4 in a row and a mediocre defense and average offense outside their top line. Our losses to start the year are not as bad considering PHX, LAK, SJS, ANA, STL are essentially all in the top 10 teams in the league right now. Last few games from WSH, PHI, NDJ to MTL and the last few games, the competition has been a lot softer.

We'll see what happens on Monday.

That line... again..

Question is what happens when Callly (Nash) is ready to go.
As of right now it seems like it would be a huge mistake to even consider breaking up that line.
Awesome game, Hags were on fire

I agree for sure, because right now I actually don't think either of the three is really playing that great, but they all have perfect roles. Kreider get the puck to Zucc (he is like a sweaping defensive midfielder in Soccer, a Gennaro Gattuso who just feeds Pirlo), Zucc just threads passes and Stepan/Kreider/Ds puts them on net.

Its a bit tricky to put together the other lines though. Keeping Hags with Richards seems like a pretty good idea, BR can really utilize his speed. Then you gotta recon that Nash slides in next to them, although I am not overly found of Nash with BR. Then you have like Pouliot/Boyle-Brass-Cally left, how would that line work? OTOH I really liked the notion of two centers with Nash.

Interesting to see that Zucc gets so much ice time in PK, and he plays really well. Only Boyle with more OK icetime of the forwards.

You can see that the slow skaters with limited mobility are slowly being phased out. Speed kills. Speed an tenacity along with crisp passing are key for Vignault's puck possession game. Hagelin is the perfect player for this scheme. Not surprised to see him doing so well after coming back from injury. Zuccarello is fighting for his NHL career this season. AV has given him a chance, and he's been grabbing it with the exception of one stinker in the West. Stepan is heating up, watch out. Pyatt should be a spare once Callahan is back. Keep Miller on the third line.

With my first sentence in mind, I don't think Girardi will be a Ranger next season. I love the guy and he's a big time minute eater, but I don't think he has the puck mobility skills AV asks for from the back end. I just don't want to lose him for nothing if he's going to be the odd man out.

good points. speed and skating matters.

girardi would look nice packaged to edmonton. that team is a mess defensively and looking to make changes. they are stocked with young offensive players. they dont need another forward. problem is will he sign there if hes moved ?

i would certainly offer up a package of mdz and girardi and see what happens. yakupov would look good on broadway.

last nights game on paper looks like a cakewalk and after that ugly first period, it pretty much was.

but they starteds slow again and really didnt show much for the first 15 mins. they looked clueless coming out of their zone.

while i am happy with the 2 points and 5 goals, this team still has issues. we need to get healthy and add one more dynamic scorer/skater and a rhd.

lets see what the next few games brings.

They are NEVER trading away 2 of our top six d-men in season. That is beyond ludicrous to even think that.

Nash and Hags needs to be together IMO, the question is just who should center them. Hagelin just creates chances, he has created at least three high-quality scoring chances in each game since his return. So when Nash returns, a lot more of those will go in the net.

Also, while I believe it may be prudent to sacrifice a great top line for some balance in the lineup I don't think you mess with a clicking top-6 to get better balance on the third line. And even so Pouliot-Brassard-Callahan is at least talent-wise among the best, if not the best, third line in the league. On paper it seems to have a similar mix of speed, skill, and tenacity as Kreider-Stepan-Zuccarello/Hagelin-Richards-Nash, so it could work out great.

Girardi has picked it up a bit after a truly horrid start to the season, but he is still making way too many unforced turnovers. At least twice per game you see him without pressure making a pass out of his own end straight to an opposing player in the NZ.

AV seems to want to use him and McD as his top pairing, but ends up playing Staal-Strålman more 5v5.

I'd almost like to see AV trying MDZ back in the top-4 with Girardi with Moore on the 3rd pairing for a few games to see if it works out. If it did it would cement MDZ as a player to keep going forward while proving Girardi redundant. Or if it fails, likely moving MDZ into the position of odd man out ahead of Girardi.

Good counter points guys, it's why I'm taking more stock into how they do this week. The winning streak is nice to get us back to close to .500, but the results against Anaheim, Pittsburgh, and Columbus are going to be the most telling of where we stand right now. I'll be there tomorrow, let's hope I'm able to bring the good luck.

The Isles have a lot of potential. They just played 2 excellent games. If it wasn't for bad bounces we'd win that game going away, we completely outplayed them in LI to boot.

I think you are right, but, hopefully, there are more really bad teams in this league than we might think. Like Toronto and Montreal sometimes are looking pretty strong, and I mean while they do a good job I just can't call those teams genuinely strong hockey teams. Detroit is thin like a paper, Boston is Boston but their best offensive player is still like Krejci and Krejci is just not that good. Still Boston is probably the team to beat.

My point is just, it's easier to get into a bit of a the grass is greener mode when you are struggling. It seem to be so easy for other teams. All the while Tampa is almost at the top of the east with a 1st line center that don't quite match up to Anisimov, "no" goalie, Sami Salo playing a major role on the blueline, etc etc etc.

But, like we saw yesterday, Carolina manhandled us for 15-20 minutes. We can still be exposed...

I think it's safe to say that if they play the way they did at the start of this game against Anaheim and Pittsburgh they are going to be in trouble. Gotta bring it.

AV has been a big part of this team's recent success. Everyone ran to attack him after the slow start but haven't given him the credit he deserves for getting this team back to basics.

A lot of us weren't necessarily attacking AV. It was more of the complete lack of effort from the players.

I do agree though, AV does deserve a lot of credit.

I agree although Carolina was a despertae team so you had ato figure at some point in teh game they would really bring it. It wasnt the start we wanted but the important thing is that our defense and goaltending is back to normal. I know the ducks are good but we are a entirely different team than the last time we played. Our speed is gonna cause them a lot of trouble

BTW, Hags is creating chances every shift. I think if you put him with Nash the guy can produce a 50 point season. The guy's forecheck and speed creates great opportunities and his skills are underrated. The guy can pass the puck pretty well.

I think a desperate Carolina is pretty equal to a regular Anaheim/Pittsburgh. Gotta have a good start here. Gotta play their ***** off and really want it.

I am thrilled with the neutral and offensive zone performance of the Stepan line. That is the kind of chemistry we need to hold the team over with Callahan and Nash out.

But... they are still really shaky in the defensive zone when they don't have the puck. If that unit is our only threat, they will get matched by the Crosby lines, and never see the puck.

I think Ideally that line becomes our 2nd, with Hagelin-Richards-Nash or Richards-Brassard-Nash functioning as the first line. That will give us a little more balance. Throw in Pouliot-Brassard-Callahan as potentially a third line and you have a balanced offensive attack.

A lot depends on how well we hold down the fort until Nash returns.

Of course they need to bring it since the competition is harder. However i think with hagelin coming back, the line of zucc/step/kreids/ and hank playing back to normal we can win this one as logn as we play like we have been

They may have been desperate, but they were also injured and sans either of their 1-2 goaltenders. They had little chance of winning that game especially with the soft goal given up by Peters when Carolina had the momentum.

I can't agree that an average top echelon team is comparable to a desperate bottom feeder. The only time I think bottom feeders are dangerous is at the end of the season when they know they are out of the playoff run. Everyone is relaxed, people are playing for fun and their burden is lifted. Teams love playing spoiler.

I am prepared to drop one or both of these next two games, the fashion in which they do it will determine how I see them going forward. If they managed to win one or both whilst getting outplayed, that's no surprise as the New York Lundqvists have been doing that for years now.

They are NEVER trading away 2 of our top six d-men in season. That is beyond ludicrous to even think that.

What if they have the confidence in Moore to move up and one of the AHL guys to take the bottom pair? Not totally crazy. Don't think it's the case obviously but it would be a possible scenario. Hopefully McI is ready next year he's been doing well it seems in the AHL this year

Agreed. Hags has created chances since he got here...his speed opens up space for his linemates and allows them to flourish. Too many posters look only at his stat line, which leads to the voluminous posts that he should be a 3rd liner, his impact can't be seen in his own stats all the time.
