Take it for what it's worth, but I have a buddy that told me that Faulk isn't really injured, but just refusing to play. I can't go into the reasons why he isn't playing as that might give my buddy's identity away and he wants to remain anonymous. I will say this though, it's not good news for the Canes.
Well there was that rumor a while back (main trade board I think) that Faulk would end up back in MN once his current contract was up. Personally I think Faulk is a very, very good player but not irreplaceable. Unfortunately for young Justin, he's under contract for another 4 years on the most affordable #1 defenseman contract in the NHL. That, my fellow Americans, is a chip in the big game.
Ron Francis is in the driver's seat. He can choose to say "**** you to Faulk, you're a Hurricane until 2020". Sure Justin can hold out or publicly demand a trade or whatever....but I doubt that any of that comes to pass. Because, in the end, Faulk and his contract may be the most valuable asset the Hurricanes possess. If Faulk and Minnesota want to be in bed together, the it's gonna cost....a lot.
"Sure Justin we'll trade you to the Wild.....for Charlie Coyle, Nino Niederreiter, and their 2016 1st round pick....heck we'll even throw in Winnipeg's 3rd".
And that's not even the best value we could likely extract from a Faulk draft day trade (Edmonton, is that you on the phone?) if it even or ever comes to that.
Still, I just find it hard to believe that Faulk wouldn't see the opportunity here...up to and including potentially wearing the C. If he can't see the future for the trees, then he's not quite as smart as I certainly thought he was.....but like I said, I personally think it may be much ado about nothing.
