I know some of us Habs fans are a bit delusional, with some still thinking that we have a chance to have Aho somehow. Excuse them.

Sorry it had to be done this way. I feel Bergy tried to somewhat take advantage of a smaller market team. But i think in reality this was just a PR stunt for him to keep his job. I mean your owner is a billionaire, he had to know that an offer "that low" would be matched immediately.

Not matching would be a awfully wrong message to send to rest of the league and fans.

And in the end you got him for a decent AAV and we both got publicity.

And yeah I wont be pissed for you to offer sheet our young guns, it's just business. (We will match!)

No hard feelings? Good luck with rest of the offseason. You bunch of Jerks!

Regards
A Habs fan

Reading the Habs thread on this is a textbook example of the stages of grief.

I love how some of them are still holding out with hope that Bergevin is still going to acquire Aho somehow because we still haven't technically matched.

My favorite one is where they think Dundon's gonna be like "We talked to Sebastian and apparently he really does want to play for Montreal so we're gonna let him go"

my second favorite one is where the guy suggests that Gary Bettman himself loaned Dundon the money bcuz he hates Canada

Was smart not to throw a bunch of money at Anders Lee. Despite Bergevin being.....IDK, a slightly more offbeat version of Ron Francis as a GM, I do think Montreal has something good building with the youth movement. I would imagine there's a lot of "win now" pressure from people up there but maybe they should chillax and wait a couple years before doing anything drastic, let things bake a little bit longer.

Yeah not a chance. Habs fans are either in a "win now" or in a "fire everybody"- mode. No other options.

Still would have been nice to see Aho in the Habs jersey. Anyhow a lot of excitment from the the offer sheet. As Torts told us: the league needs more hate!

For the entertainment value it has I am really waiting to see your revenge offer sheets.

Not doubting that this is true, but why would you come and admit that? I thought the "I let my agent handle things" lines would have been Aho's PR play here. I'm really curious to how he frames this, when he does speak.

What question was he answering to? Seems to me this was about if Gerry went rogue on handling it or something. All actions were Sebastian-approved.

He did emphasize "I think" when he talked about Sebastian's thoughts, and that's obviously weasel words you use when you know Sebastian didn't really think that.

Were the Habs the ones that spent a decade convinced they were going to get Vinny Lecavlier?

After Pittsburgh won the Crosby lottery there were quite a few Habs fans who, presaging Tavaresmania, pointed out that Crosby's favorite team growing up was Montreal and that as soon as Crosby turned UFA, he'd be bound tout suite to La Belle Province.

I doubt that will happen tbh. Maybe we would think about making a run at Domi next year if we let Haula and Faulk go and that Marleau cap hit goes away, but it would probably be a token gesture without any real expectation of working.
