I believe Bergevin went with the offer sheet because he saw all the FAs were going to other directions so he pulled the offer sheet as emergency trick so he coulds say "well, atleast we tried something". Doesn't explain why the sheet is so damn fine to match apart the term. Maybe they really thought Canes would have problems with the signing bonuses.

Yeah I don't get why he played along, either.

He HAD to know this was a weak offer if his intentions was really to get Aho. And if he truly honestly thought this was something we couldn't match, he's dumber than a sack of bricks.

All he did was paint a bullseye on his back as someone so out of touch that he can be taken advantage of, easily. Hell, we've honed our skills the past few years as a team taking advantage of GMs who don't know any better. If he truly thinks this is the case, he played his card, exposed himself as a fool, and gave us a negotiating advantage we didn't even know we had.
It was a PR move by an embattled GM.

Oh I and I have read rumours that they contacted Point first (same agent), but he turned down any sheets so they went with plan B towards Aho. It's just a mess to try to figure out tbf.

It certainly looks that way.

Funny, I brought this theory up on the trade board, and immediately had multiple Mtl people jumping down my throat over the "outlandish theory". Mind you, this is all while they're openly saying the reason Aho didn't join the call was because he is pissed he doesn't get to play in his one true love, Montreal.

Yeah, Mrs. Hank mentioned that she'd read this somewhere.

If true, that means it went something like this:

Bergevin: hey Gerry, I really need to make a big move. I'd like to offer sheet Point.

Johannson: oh, yeah, I feel your pain, but Point is unavailable. Aho, on the other hand, has a cheap owner and really loves the Habs. I think you've got a real shot there!

B: gee whiz, Gerry, do you really think so?

J: absolutely! Let's make an offer that loads the cash up front. That skinflint Dundon will never know what hit him!

B: golly, Gerry, you're the best!

(J calls Aho)

J: hey kid, I think I've got you that 5 year deal for $8.5 AAV, with like $20m upfront. Pretty good, right? Sign this. Small hitch: there's like a 0.01% chance you'll be playing in Montreal next year.

Aho: ok. (Goes immediately back to playing Fortnite with Turbo.)

Aaaand scene.

we know waiting to match only ties up mtl's pucks for another potential offer sheet, but does nothing to seriously inhibit them from using their cap space plus the 10% offseason overage. so, the question i'd love to see habs fans answer is what, exactly, has bergevin done to improve their team? what move has even been rumored that would help them?

i know it is just day two, but so far the answer is nothing. the best i can tell, they're hoping rookies will come in and improve the team enough to get over the playoff hump. good luck, i guess.

They are so mad. The ones that aren't mad are sad, and the others have somehow deluded themselves into thinking the Canes actually won't match after all that yesterday.

These people are not in touch with reality.

I'm just hoping this "longshot" of the Canes doing a "360 reversal on all that big press" doesn't come to pass.

Or I'm hoping it does come to pass. Is that right?

Well they can say Aho was theirs for couple hours. Actually almost a day. That is something.

Actually, that's not true, at least not according to the way Waddell explained it. From what he said, until the team holding his rights declines to match he is still their player.

Yeah, but they can say it. Does not matter what the facts are. I was joking obviously, and I have a hunch your comment was made tongue on cheek aswell. :)

That is not the complete picture. It also ties up their ability to use the picks to make a trade as well. And that could be helpful to the Canes. For example, what if Montreal wants to move on to another forward that is rumored to be available in trade, like Gusev from Vegas. By holding the picks for the remainder of the 7 days, that gives the Canes a window of opportunity to trade for the same player using their own picks while the Habs wait.

Having said that, I do have an uneasy feeling in my stomach, that if given a choice Aho would rather play in Montreal.

Oh, for the love of God. He was using them to get what he wanted.

There's a difference between being OK in going to Montreal, if your calculated risk doesn't work, and actually, actively, *wanting* to play there instead of here.

It is unbelieveable. I need to stay away from there. It's not healthy.

I mean its not that bad. Just Report the obvious trolls, and its actually a bit of fun.

The last couple days have been very, errr..... "informative" about how things work outside of 26, not that I needed much confirmation.

The guy who is so convinced the team is going to fold because of this deal is just awesome right now. So, so many tin foil hats are being worn in there right now its incredible.
