Post-Game Talk: Canes beat Leafs 6-3

We can agree to disagree. I think the leafs, at 4th overall in the league, are demonstratively better than every team they play this month other than maybe Jersey.
Maybe marginally better than. The way theyve been playing since Christmas I wouldn’t favour them in a 7 game series against anyone other than CBJ ….if started today.

Keep Thornton away from this team lol
Every time I see Thorton, I think of StThomas Ontario, and everytime I think of St.Thomas, Ontario I think of Jumbo the elephant, and everytime I think of Jumbo and St.Thomas I think of driving into St.Thomas and seeing the statue of Jumbo, ànd what you see driving into St.Thomas is Jumbo's rear end, and everytime I think of Jumbo's rear end I think of Thorton. Hmmmm

Everything started well. Willy on fire. 2:0 up in mid 1st. And then they stopped skating.

What really stood out to me was how crisp Canes passes were. They were playing NHL 2014 out there. passes, one timers and tips. Kotchetkov looked terrible in the 1st half and then he took it personally.
I get it. Mid January, they are in the lead, can't win them all. blah blah. This game was on a platter for them. Everything went to shit as soon as they showed Jumbo loser on the screen

I’ve always thought Kotchetkov looks like he catches with the wrong hand…always shaky.

Canes brought playoff speed to that game and we we saw was highly predictable .. Willy can play that type of game and carried JT .. we also saw Matty and Mitch unable to keep up to pace of play in an up/down ice type of game with much less time and space on puck .. in these type of games which don't occur very often in regular season hockey you can see da achiles heel of our Leafs .. our top guys are not willing to play a gritty hard hitting game to combat for lack of foot speed .. Matty knows that already but he likely decided on bench that it was not worth getting hurt for a regular season game which may be da right conclusion anywho .. sacrifice is da solution and Berube will be sure to drive it home post game .. our D is also significantly impacted by loss of McCabe as our net is much more easily accessible when OEL Timmins and Rielly are all playing

Sums up my thoughts. Similar to the New Jersey game, but Stolarz stood on his head.

Weird game as all our matchups seem to be (obviously the Ayres game but there was also a random 1pm game a few years back that ended like 9-7 Leafs with like 4 different lead changes). Anyways, I hope we meet you guys in the ECF, sick and tired of the Lightning, Panthers, Rags being in those games, need some new blood in the Cup finals representing the east.

Leafs top line can't hang against a heavy forcheck and a shut down C it seems. Most they can hope for is even on the +/- side of things. Spreading out the offense over 3 lines is imperative.

A bit ironic since I was the negative one last game, but I thought they played fine overall and can live with the loss (granted, I only watched the 1st+3rd)

They carried play a lot more than they have for the last month and generated a fair amount of offence. Kochetkov made some pretty insane saves in the third otherwise the leafs could've come back.

Defensively the leafs got destroyed on the point shop tips, though. I'm sure Berube will fix that so not too worried for it as a long term issue

Beat Isles x2, Bruins, and Flyers x2. Not exactly good teams.
Not only that they weren't exactly convincing wins. They were lucky to win some of those. Funny they were playing poorly looking like they couldn't generate much offence in those games and won and last night actually started well and looked like a better effort and then it went downhill. 1st line cost them horrible effort.

Saw this on the main board, puts some context on the -6, sometimes it's just one of those nights.
Multi Selke winner Kopitar was a -6 just last year.

MINUS_REG
On the hand, this chart also shows just how rare -6 is, happened less than 10 times since 2020 (until last night that is). Maybe I'm reading the chart wrong, but that's what it looks like to me anyway.

Whatever, I wouldn't read too much into this, we know that these guys are all good players, especially during the regular season. We just need M&M to produce offence in the playoffs at a good clip, I'm sick of seeing guys like Ranta, Drai, Kucherov and a bunch of others tear it up in the playoffs while Leaf fans are making excuses for our stars.

Glad we brought hey we're in first place Thornton along.

Hopefully the loss wakes them up. They've been playing like crap despite the wins.

That quote by Thornton in the Amazon series is exactly why the leafs got dummied by Montreal. You have leaders like Thornton that don’t give a shit about the details influencing the younger players and we wonder why they sometimes lack accountability.

Yeah but the main boards have a hardon for anytime something bad happens to the leafs. To them it's a big thing.
It seems much more over blown here than there. There were a few idiotic takes but the comments were mostly reasonable.
I thought the list was interesting.

I am surprised Patty Marleau is not on the trip. I'd guess he'd be Marner's mentor.
Old man Lou bringing in Marleau to mentor our 18, 19, 20 year old future stars to take as much money as possible and only think about their career earnings was probably one of the biggest mistakes in this era.

That hard on exists everywhere to be honest….you’ll find trolls on Sportsnet YouTube videos too. It comes with the territory when you’re Canada’s Team and get all the attention.

PS: There’s nothing “main” about the “main boards”….the Leafs subforum literally generates the most traffic, posts and comments on HF. I call it the “troll board”.

Our players have accountability, and the quote, while ill-timed, had nothing to do with the close loss to Montreal. Seemed like a light hearted attempt at pointing out that Keefe was overreacting, more than not caring about the details. The truth is that we were actually quite good at the details, and had strong underlying play. I believe Keefe was discussing rebound goals, and while I don't know how we ranked at the time of the meeting, we finished 5th in rebound goals that season, and had more rebound shots and goals than Montreal in the playoffs.

It's ironic that Thornton takes so much heat for that comment, considering that looking only at wins and losses and not the underlying details and context is what this board does best.
