Post-Game Talk: Canes beat Leafs 6-3

Everything started well. Willy on fire. 2:0 up in mid 1st. And then they stopped skating.

What really stood out to me was how crisp Canes passes were. They were playing NHL 2014 out there. passes, one timers and tips. Kotchetkov looked terrible in the 1st half and then he took it personally.
I get it. Mid January, they are in the lead, can't win them all. blah blah. This game was on a platter for them. Everything went to shit as soon as they showed Jumbo loser on the screen

 
We'll just chalk this one up to another learning lesson.

Is anyone surprised the Leafs got blown away once they faced a half decent team again. It was great seeing them win five in a row against soft competition. But as soon as they faced a real contender they collapsed faster than a cheap lawn chair after I plant my fat ass in it.

Failure at it's best on display tonight.

We can blame the dynamic duo of Marner and Matthews for this pathetic performance. They didn't care enough to put it all on the line. Realizing their skill was being neutered they could've started hammering bodies and going to the hard areas if they wanted to win.

They choose play a peripheral game and lose instead.

If you're investing almost $50M into four forwards those players have to do the heavy lifting. The league minimum chumps and grunts can't be trusted to step up. Matthews and Marner just witnessed first hand what a real contender looks like.

With games against the Stars and Lightning coming up I hope they're excited to learn some more lessons about what contending teams do to be successful.

To be honest, the Leafs' schedule is still pretty favourable for the next few weeks. So many home games, and then the road games are all against mediocre teams (depending on how you rate the Oilers). There's not really another meaningful game until the next one against Carolina on Feb 22.

Is it just me or, other than all the back to backs, do the Leafs not seem to have a really soft schedule this year?

The competition in the back half of the season is a little tougher but still pretty reasonable from the looks of it.

We literally have the best record against the top half of the league.

Also we already beat Stars and Lightning this year

For all of the complaining that people do about the schedule, it has been very favourable to the Leafs. The home/road split through the first 50 games is crazy.

Being 5 points out, but having 6 teams between you and the last spot is not really in the playoff hunt. Either way, Philly and the Islanders are terrible teams.
 
Watching last nights game, I can't help but think we REALLY need another top 4 defenceman. I would rather we go that route then another centre. We can always play Minten as a third centre, he is already head and shoulders better than Domi, who can shift to the wing.
Rielly- Myers (haven't looked too bad, why did Berube break them up???)

then I am lost. OEL, Benoit and Timmins all brutal.
I guess ideal would be a stud to play with Rielly, push Myers down to 3rd pairing, and sort out the rest.
 
I just find it funny how overblown this "mentor" crap is. The mediots will whine etc and now we have fans that think 34 and 16 and the rest of the crew live their hockey thru Thornton and Marleau.

Just too funny.

Lets all forget all the hard work these players do everyday etc...training....workouts in the offseason with other NHL players.

Last nights game was disappointing ....no doubt. 34 and 16 were like a -6 which has never happened before from those 2.

It was a bad game.....end of story.....move on ...regroup . We still have alot of games left in the season. Alot

Also....wanted to add .....I agree with the post above. We need someone better than Rielly.
Its been a constant issue for years but he always gets a pass . How many resources to we have to waste to find him a suitable partner?

Berube wanted his D big and to punish the opposing team like he does with his 4th line.
The issue is you need players with some actual hockey skills. Players like Benoit which I like best passes are off the boards. We have no D that has a shot and few that know how to make a stretch pass. We already lose so much possession with the dump and chase and now we lose more because of the lack of skills on our backend.
