Yes, I'm looking at sportsclubstats again. Sigh.

10-0 down the stretch for 97 points, 98.9% chance.

8-2 down the stretch for 93 points, 50% chance.

Chance of finishing 9th: 100% chance.

If we win out, there's a pretty good chance. But that's not happening.

Because Canes.

12 game winning streaks are rare for any team, much less an average one. Only the Bluejackets (15 games) and Wild (12 games) have accomplished it this season and the longest in our franchise history is 9 games. Winning out would be uncharted territory.

Winning out with 3 games left would be uncharted territory.

IMO we should save any kind of playoff talk till after the DET-DET-NJD sequence. Given the much harder schedule after that, there's really no point even looking at hypotheticals unless we know we're getting 6 points from that stretch. Because the chances of us running the table on CBJ-DAL-@MIN-@PIT are low enough that we really need to know what we're dealing with as we head into that stretch.

True, but there likely won't be any playoff talk to have after that sequence. Canes are bound to lose a couple of games here and then it's officially over.

That's kind of where I am. No sense in getting emotionally involved with this until the streak gets into crazy-fluke-Cinderella territory. Anything less and it's a "thanks for participating" situation.

God damnit, I remember having this EXACT conversation right after I joined this site. It was literally the first real argument I had here, with me insisting that there was no point getting excited about a little hot streak because we were already too far out for it to make a difference.

Seven years later :shakehead

Oh geez guys please don't get emotionally invested in this crazy Cinderella scenario. They could run the table and still miss the playoffs with 3 teams ahead of them. And they sure as **** aren't going to run the table.

Also they're going to lose in New Jersey. They always do.

Yep. I'm having fun seeing them win, I'll continue to root for them to win every game, but by no means am I getting my hopes up for playoffs. Don't mind talking about a Cinderella run, I just don't expect it. Kind of like talking about what I'd do if I won the PowerBall.

In a draft this weak, I don't care about dropping from 6th to 11th or whatever. This may be one of the few seasons where this late season surge doesn't bother me. I'm just going to enjoy the wins. When we're balls deep in the doldrums of August without NHL hockey, this will hopefully be enough to sustain our hopes for next season. We have too much to be hopeful about to cheer against these guys. Run the table. I want our boys to get some meaningful games under their belts and the closer we get to sniffing the playoffs, the more it will help us in the long term snapshot. It beats the alternative we were looking at 8 games ago.

Hot wind, moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins, while we put his dream together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
Oh I see his face!

Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, far?
When do we leave?
Hey, I believe, I believe

Pretty sure that's not how the balls-deep metaphor is supposed to work, but I digress.

I learned of the expression only recently when reading about the offensive online criticism post gone viral about the Berlin techno-club Berghain, also an abysmally difficult place to get in. There is more truth to his post than we should be comfortable to admit.
