Kooch is not a goalie you can rely on to win games.

Our defense is dogshit compared to previous years

This is basically what most everyone expected us to be this year. A team that at best is a borderline playoff team. If things don't turn around, this team probably isn't playing in the postseason this year.

Barring some 10 game losing streak there’s no team below them in the metro who’s catching the canes. They’re gonna make playoffs probably in the third spot in the metro but wouldn’t rule out catching Washington

Burns and Slavin have dropped a lot versus last two years.

But, beyond in-zone Hiccups this year Canes used to do a great job clogging the middle and not allowing teams to skate through with speed…that’s not the case this year.

Back to our top pair, RBA’s bad experience at tail end of his career will probably stop him from sending Burns down to a 2nd or 3rd pairing. However, I wonder if Slavin & Walker would be a better combo. Of course, then again burns lack of speed on the 3rd pair would be bad too (unlike LY where Chatty could cover him).

They’re both 2 years older it’s just expected

True but Slavin is still in a prime age. Plus, their minutes are subdued versus other pairs in the league (although not tonight as both played 24+. Smith only got 15 shifts so either injured or they didn’t like what they saw from him defensively tonight). Can’t play that way for a long stretch though.

Gleason needs to shake things up.

Complete overreaction. We’re going through a rough stretch but this is hardly unprecedented in the Rod era, even when we’ve had much “better” teams on paper.

Even still, on the season we are top 10 in both goals for and against along with top tier special teams and faceoffs and 11th in team point percentage. That’s with extremely cold goaltending and a ton of underperforming players.

Considering this year was obviously a bit of a transitional year with this core it’s still been a great season so far overall despite the recent lackluster play. I’m not concerned at all. My expectations are not to win a cup. Next year that’ll probably be the goal/hope/expectation but this year I’m thrilled with making the playoffs and winning a round or 2. Which I do think we will do.

Next year comes the big reinforcements as we have Nikishin coming, possibly other young guys and really an absolutely absurd cap and asset situation (to swing big in FA or trade) for a contender like us with a relatively young core.

What is wrong with Svechnikov this season? For those that have watched most of his games? I have him on fantasy team and he has been pretty quiet

People are really down on the team. Kinda surprised. They are mostly a slightly above average team but not contender this season.

None of the young guys seem to be taking that next step and that seems to be the biggest hindrance. I personally thought Koochie had more to show but he's been mediocre. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising with the defensive losses. But he also brings some excitement to the game. Kokomiami looks like....not a 2c but it seems like he might not totally disappear for the 2nd half of the season this year. Roslovic looks good as a trigger man playing with Aho and Jarvis. I'd keep him there.

I still think we finish metro 3 barring a trade. The problem come playoffs is the team is worse on the road and will rely heavily on matchups they won't be able to dictate as a lower seed.

To lead, Happy New Year to all.

Prior to this year, I was on board with you. Now, I don't see it. Canes will have a lot of holes to fill. Unless they get lucky with some moves Canes next window may be 3 years out.

Current picture for next year...young guys & other stuff:
D, Canes are not adding. They gain Nikishin but lose the high quality play of Orlov and Burns needs to be replaced too. Now, if Morrow is the guy you expect to replace Burns, then it's probable he will need a couple of years to adjust/raise his level to NHL play to reach Burns' level (albeit a decline) this year. I suspect although he is older, Nikishin probably will need a year to get used to NA/NHL too. Slavin will be a year older (and his play this year has not been as good as previous years....a decline????)

Goalies--big question mark. A #1 needs to be found and I doubt they can find someone with Freddie's high end capability at the same cost. Hopefully, that replacement will be less injured too. The big Russian in Chicago looks promising but he is very young and probably not ready for a few more years. There is no one else in Canes pipeline in Europe that will be ready either.

Forwards: On the Wolves, I don't think Nadeau, FUS nor Gleb will be NHL ready for a SC run by next year. Our "top" line of Staal-Martinook-Carrier will be another year older. Necas unless traded will be in his walk year and it's a big question mark whether he gets resigned. If not, he needs to be traded to get an asset)s) in return (I believe Canes made a mistake not moving Dougie and getting assets before he walked....I had no issue with Pesce nor Skeji because LY was a true SC opportunity year).

Here is a list I saw for top available free agents (numbers are their ranking). Not really a great list x a few players.

I think there’s a lot of overreacting based on last nights game. Seriously, we outplayed them greatly for the most part, but they stuck around because of some plays you rarely see.

The first goal was entirely because Carrier lost his stick, and rather than wait it out until we got possession, he indicated to…someone…(either Staal or Martinook, though neither seemed to be looking at him when he made that indication) to cover Marchenko and then went straight to the bench for a new stick. Unsurprisingly, leaving Marchenko unguarded in the high slot didn’t end up well for us.

We all saw the second goal. How many times are we going to see our own player take out our own goalie like that? Hopefully not too often, but hardly a goal we should put too much stock into.

Finally, the PPG in the third. A weird bounce off Jarvis’ leg, and one that certainly happens more often than the other two goals this game, but given how great our PK has been this year, it’s nothing too concerning, IMO. It IS a little concerning how MANY penalties we took that game, and Svech being a complete dumbass to lead to the tying goal isn’t a great look for him.
