Seriously if Michkov is there at 5 it's a no brainer, players at #5 take 2-3 years usually to reach the NHL anyways.

So what if we have to wait 3 years for his KHL contract (worst case scenario)? You get that development path at #5 anyways most of the time, the only difference is the quality of player you'd end up with this time around. Michkov has superstar potential, you don't pass on those players.

The harder problem for me is if Michkov isn't there at 5 , Smith is the same mold of a lot of the players/prospects we already have. Reinbacher looks really good and we don't have players like him in the system.

Ideally Smith goes top 4 then we'll get either Carlsson or Michkov ;). Smith's compete level and lack of willingness to chip in defensively is a big red flag for me, I dunno how well his game would translate to the NHL tbh. Could easily end up being another Turcotte. Then again he could just not be motivated at that level of hockey.. it's hard to tell (Sergachev had this issue as well in junior). Regardless, it's still something the scouting staff really needs to look into.

Why would Columbus acquire Provorov when future Shea Weber guaranteed success Reinbacher was available? Mysterious.
Columbus needed a LD to replace Gavrikov and their 3rd overall is going to go to a center they lack to play between Goudreau and Laine.

Michkov is like a bigger CC on steroids. At 5, he is BPA by a country mile. Let's see if the org is true to their word of drafting BPA.

I'm curious what the price is to move up to 3 to take him there. Columbus don't want him. They want a C. If he is in fact CC on steroids, isn't he worth moving up to get? Or at least seeing what Columbus wants to pass on Carlsson in order to take Will Smith at 5? Owen Beck? Mike Matheson? FLA 1st?

Man Michkov is one cocky player
I like that and I do think star players need to have that (maybe not cocky but high confidence in themselves)

It's just in hockey that star players doesn't bring a swag to the game, look at the NBA and the NFL

Because they have s hot on Leo Carlsson

If MTL had the 3oa pick no one here would talk about Reinbacher.

You make a very good argument. But I don’t think picking the defenseman in the case that Smith, or Michkov aren’t options for whatever reason is a strong argument. Reinbacher isn’t the reach that KK was in 2018. I don’t even think it’s as much of a reach as going for Slafkovsky last year.

Obviously it depends on where you have Reinbacker ranked, and there seems to be a difference of opinion among writers and experts. I've seen him in the top 10 but also in the late teens/early 20s. Even the scouting reports in the rankings that have him in the top 10 admit that the offensive part of his game isn't all that to write home about and he's more of a 200 ft player with an aggressive physical style. I would love to add him if we grabbed another pick in the teens, but not at #5 overall for a player who seems to project as a bigger, right-handed version of Romanov.

Because they want to make the playoffs this next season and because Jarmo Kekelainen was almost certainly ultimatumed into making the playoffs next season, hence why doing those short-term moves.

I agree with your post because of the part that I bolded. If Reinbecher is not a Makar, Erik Karlsson, Adam Fox, etc type of a player (a dynamic offensive D), I do not want to use the fifth overall pick on him in a strong draft year.

There IS something to be said about two-way D and their importance, but I genuinely feel like we could find a decent two-way D or two in the later rounds of the draft.

BPA over organizational need, please.

That package won't cut it. I'd try to move up to 4. Guaranteed one of Michkov/Carlsson/Smith.

The NHL draft is fast approaching and fans are eager to know the choice of the Montreal Canadiens. The team will have the opportunity to select a very talented young hopeful among whom Matvei Michkov and Will Smith seem particularly interested in the supporters. One of these two players should notably be available when general manager Kent Hughes makes his announcement on June 28.

Despite Matvei Michkov's undeniable talent, his complex situation seems to be on the minds of many NHL general managers. Although fans would like to see the Canadian take a chance by selecting him, it is possible that the team opts for another attacker.

Will Smith, an 18-year-old center, could be the Habs' top pick. He had a remarkable season with the American development program, registering 51 goals and 76 assists in 60 games. He was also the most successful player at the U18 World Championship, racking up 20 points in 7 games to help the American team win the gold medal.

Wait am I on Sportsnet/tsn?

Yeah a trade for the 3OA pick would probably look like 5OA, the Florida 1st, a 2024 2nd and a B level prospect. If you think the difference between Carlsson and Smith is worth it, then obviously HuGo should go for it but if not just pick BPA at 5

Am I crazy or does he not remind you of Crosby ....i'm trying not to say this without being Blasphemous of course , but the kid just ooozes hockey iQ , Obviously not the same core strength as Sid not even close clearly but the way he thinks the game is on another level its incredible .

I saw pronman had him as the prospect with the most upside in the entire draft even over Bedard and I tend to agree , even if I think Bedard is more of a sure thing the upside on michkov is just through the roof
