You need to make tomorrow a how to finish practice
The finish was frustrating tonight, but we’re -3 goals above expected on the season. We’re pretty much finishing exactly like we should.

You’d like to get a little lucky there but I have a hard time getting on the 6th best goal scoring team in the league too much in regards to finish.

If one of them is Vitek that would explain some things. Of course he had to play because Blackwood’s bionic parts are defective though
Marino playing sick was choice and he had a bad game. If a player is sick keep him away from everyone.

They outchance the opposition regularly but the way they give the puck away and the resulting defensive clusterf***s sure make the few chances they give up wildly dangerous. This aspect of the game doesn’t feel all that different than what we’ve seen the last couple of years, I think the wins are coming because they are scoring and getting good goaltending. Vitek didn’t hide their warts today and the result was a loss to a bottom feeder.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the playoffs. If they can somehow figure out how not to be collective Severson’s in their own end, they have the potential to go far. If they don’t, I can see them getting swept without much of a sweat.

If this team managed the puck responsibly they’d be the Bruins.

Gave up 3 pretty soft goals and missed a few easy conversions. But I would take our chances in that game 100 times out of 100.

I'm usually on the negative side, but there are some especially weird takes tonight.

Jack with 71 points. He needs 29 points in 25 games to get to 100. I have a hard time seeing him not make it tbh.

If Marino is sick enough that he almost didn’t play then that would hinder him, that’s how the human body works. He isn’t a robot.
The Canadiens were missing Cole Caufield that's like us missing Jack .... plus Marino was not part of the problem. Illness isn't a valid excuse in this game considering we carried the play .... unless it was VTek that was sick and he sure played like it.

People say this literally every time they get goalie’d and struggle finishing. Totally dominated the game.
Yup. Bottom line, Montreal scored on their high danger chances. Montambeault stopped ours.

You want to minimize mistakes, but they’ll always happen. That’s hockey. Mistake free games don’t exist. Montreal had 18 shots for crying out loud.

Montembault deserves immense credit for essentially stealing 3 goals from us.

Yes, we played sloppy, but that's still getting goalied. Both can be true.
The sloppiness was on defense. Goals given up to guys coming in unmarked late. As Chico just pointed out, multiple goals scored by guys who didn’t have a Devil within 6 feet of them when they shot the puck. Everyone defending on one side of the ice while Montreal players are alone on the other side. Siegs already defending a 2 on 1 when the puck gets passed clean through him for a tap in.

Montreal took it to us and outskated us from the opening puck drop. We didn’t have the focus we needed. And that happens sometimes this time of year, particularly against a young and motivated team like the Habs who have nothing to lose.

Classically, the first game back from a long road trip is the fatigue “let down” game. But playing back to back against Winnipeg, after we beat the Pens, we came home and didn’t let down on Sunday. The back to back nature of the games seemed to let us sustain the play we had in Pittsburgh.

Tonight - the second game at home after the 4 games on the road - was the post road trip letdown. Mentally even more than physically and especially in our defensive focus.

They "dominated" the game because of score effects and that they fell behind. Using MoneyPuck's numbers, at the time of the Montreal first goal the Habs had a .37 to .06 xG advantage. At the time of the second Habs second goal, it was 1.1 to .9 xG advantage in favor of Montreal. At the time the Habs made it 3-1, the xG advantage was 1.2 to 1.12 in favor of the Habs.

Basically it was an even game until the Habs took a two goal lead and score effects went into over drive. The Devils are overall this year a better team. That is what happens when a lesser team grabs a multigoal lead and doesn't give it right back. They tend to be conservative and sit back and the better teams shows urgency to get back in it. Had Montreal not gotten that lead or if the Devils had gotten a quick one back, I'm not sure that dominate gap in play would have emerged.

Definitely we had the chances. But the way we were not playing defense, it was a game we were going to have to win 5 to 4 or something if we were going to win it.

As I just said, post 4 game road trip let down. You see it all the time, even with very good clubs. The one thing Ruff kept mentioning was fatigue.

And I'm not even going to say "at least Bratt scored" 'cause I'm too pissed off that the Devils lost to THIS team.

A 5-2 score should've been the Devils being the ones scoring 5 and the Habs scoring 2.

What a joke of a game.

I gotta be honest, I don't really care if we finish 2nd or 3rd in the Metro...especially given our road record.

of course I do care if we can somehow get 1st and beat out Carolina, but I am not sure thats in the cards.

Very frustrating night, mostly bc of the opponent you expect to get two points out of that. But on to the next one. Need a bounce back W on Thursday.
