Thought we were the stronger team for most of the game. That goal where Marino just completely lost the puck and it turns into a rush for Montreal probably doesn't happen if he is 100%. The Habs generated some good chances but we had a lot more of the puck and had a lot of good setup plays that just didn't turn into shots due to a flubbed pass here or there. I'm willing to chalk that one up to a few guys not being 100% and playing their 5th game in 8 days. If they have so many defensive breakdowns tomorrow I'll be more concerned.

This is Vitek's first regulation loss in almost 2 months. Hell of a run he was on.
He didn’t break the streak record then right? It was a great run and we need him playing well as much as anybody over the next bunch of years….. but I didn’t want him breaking that record.

people are putting way too much stock in a dud game in a tuesday night against a last place team.

turn the page and move on, these games happen. they’ve been playing too well lately to take this as some larger indictment of the team
Except we’re in a tight race where every point matters. we can’t afford to throw away points to teams we’re supposed to beat.

Meh, I don't think we're catching Carolina and even if the Rags pass us it might serve us better to start the playoffs at MSG considering we're the top road team in the league.

Right now we're still struggling to win on home ice and I could see us easily being too tight if Game 1 was at the Rock.

So, about Josh Anderson… anyone? :sarcasm:
I remember Craig Rivet raving about him on The Instigators when Anderson was with the Blue Jackets.

But it seems for every game like last night there are two clunkers where he is all but invisible.

And always leery about players who have twice as many goals as assists; with an horrendous plus/minus.

Seems like he plays more for Josh Anderson and his paycheck than for the players around him.

As for the playoffs, we’re 15 points over the line with 3 games in hand on both Wild Card teams. There’s no true tight race.

I don’t really care where we slot for the playoffs at this point to be honest.

Devils just played one of their best games of the year at home against one of the top teams in the league before last night's dud.

Watching the Rangers lose to those same Jets - who were playing the second game in a back-to-back - I don't see the Rangers catching the Devils.

Nor am I worried about the Devils playing at home.

Last night's loss was a stubbed toe but unless it turns into a string of losses I don't see a reason to panic.

Yup, last night’s game was frustrating, sucks that Vitek didn’t have his best night while Montambeault did, the Habs capitalized on most of our mistakes and we didn’t on theirs and that we seemingly had some sick guys.

But there were still some positives. We overwhelmingly carried play and controlled the puck. If we play that game 100 times, we’d win it 85-90% of the time.

Was with you until the "overwhelmingly controlled the puck" part.

Game fit the pattern of most of the Devils losses.

Fell behind and then were either unwilling or unable to go into the hard areas and make hard plays (with the Mercer goal being one of the few exceptions).

Passing the puck around the perimeter and lobbing shots from long range (playing catch with the goalie as one coach would say) is different from controlling the game.

Devils loss last night stopped a 6 game home winning streak.

"Right now we're still struggling to win on home ice"

Devils had a 6-game home winning streak snapped with that loss.

Why do some here forget that?

While I’d agree with the folks who say our defense was worse than the shot total indicated…what you’re saying is simply untrue. The devils created plenty of their own scoring chances.

Because it took like a month and a half to win six in a row between the bye and a couple of long road trips

Plus tbh the first four of those games went to OT, it’s not like we were particularly dominant until the last two of the streak.

Severson says they were flat

Nico says they weren't ready from the beginning

Coach says he saw it practice, they were sluggish. Came out flat and they were tired.

Hockey's Future no they dominated. Look at my chart.
Yeah, they’re more emotionally invested in the game and want to believe everything is in their control. Meanwhile their goalie was making saves when he wasn’t even looking and Vitek was off. Moving on.

That's fair.

Though I do think the loss to a bottom-feeder like the Habs at home stung a ton to where that was forgotten momentarily.

Now if you'll excuse me, I apparently need to "get over it" which is advice I just received recently....so yeah. :squint:

To be honest, I feel like we've generally beaten teams we were supposed to. Good teams still lose to bottom feeders. I don't feel like we've lost a ton to them.

Not my favorite player at all but when he is on his game he can be pretty dominant in a way, not necessarily on the score sheet.

For the plus/minus i think it’s pretty normal on a last place team so i wouldn’t really give attention to that.

I seriously don’t think he plays for himself, i think he’s trying, he’s just not the smartest player ever so he gets his goals by creating chaos in the offensive zone more than creating smart plays, if it makes any sense? lol

But yeah, he’s really not the most consistent player.

I was joking with you guys because i know it’s way less sexy thinking you’d get Anderson instead of Meier

They definitely started out flat in the 1st period, but from the second half on we absolutely dominated them.

After the 1st period we had 1 goal on 30 shots and they had 3 goals on 9 shots (not counting empty net). That isn't normal and it hasn't happened to this team in a while.

It's pretty common for us to have slow starts but pick it up as the game goes on. That's what happened but their goalie stood on his head and got a little luck. Whatever, shit happens.
