They've been getting really bad in the last few years. Barely developing any real NHL prospects, as well. I wonder what happened. Can any Swiss fans tell us what's happened in recent years that now they are having drafts where they don't even have any guys drafted? They had the 1OA not too long ago.

Its sort of a combination of many factors. A few bad birth years with rather pedestrian prospects is probably the main cause for this specific team but cant explain the more underlying problems of our junior programm. One of the biggest issues that has been identified by experts is that our junior coaches for the lower age groups are much worse than those from the top nations. In addition to that coaches from the u17 and u20 elit teams are more concerned with winning championships to advance their own coaching career than in developing the players properly. So they force them into defensive systems wich halts the development of their creativity. Another problem is that in Switzerland there are not enough programms that allow the better prospects to focus soley on hockey. A lot of them still complete an apprenticeship and school besides hockey and are overwhelmed by the workload.

On the pro level the NLA clubs are a problem as well. Our prospects dont get enough good minutes (including special teams) in the NLA when they turn 17/18 like they do in the DEL for example. The Clubs are in general to concerned with immidiate success and neglect their junior programm with some exceptions like the ZSC Lions or Zug. Instead of developing prospects they just sign the best available players on the market. This has led to medicore swiss players making way more money than they are worth. Now there are discussions allow up to 10 roster spots to import players to lower the salary demands of swiss players, wich willow worsen the situation for young prospects further if it gets implemented. Those problems have been identified for years now but nothing is happening, mostly because the clubs dont want any reforms and the federation doesnt really have any influence, compared to them.

Once they started playing the right way and getting back to basics they played well. Finland is up and everyone is good from here on in, they need to keep playing this way going forward.

Great to see Byfield have a night he needed because we sure as hell need him, he will feel a lot better about his game after tonight.

this game is proof we are in the right frame of mind and positive habits ( maybe some early penalty troubles aside) to take on the Finns.
Kicked Byfields tires enough in the past so good to see him have some fun and contribute in a big way.
No reason to think we can’t take number 1 seed to the quarters.

Hockey is a funny game. One of the only sports where when one team runs up the score anyone who gets a goal looks almost ashamed they did so.

When Perfetti scored Canada's #8 last night he looked like someone stole his lunch money, then sulked back to the bench looking for consolation by the coaching staff. Poor kid.
