I think it still would take place. The NHL wants their own hosted tournament where they get all the revenue. It would not hold a lot of prestige though.
It's possible, but the urgency wouldn't necessarily be the same.

Most akin would be the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, held in between best on best olympics in 2002 and 2006. I don't remember there being a ton of buzz to it, but it still happened. It's possible, but the urgency wouldn't necessarily be the same.

It's a weird list.. I'll add this one too for consideration.
I actually have fond memories of that tournament as I followed it quite closely. But, I'm a bit of a hockey fanatic and a lot of my more casual fan friends didn't take a lot of interest.
It was one of Jagr's best performances in that semi-final game, even though they ended up losing to Lecavalier's OT winner. He was unstoppable, they tried everything to get the puck off his stick and he'd just maintain possession in the zone. I promised myself that I wouldn't forget it.
The best thing for the World Cup would have been if Finland had won it in the Final. It would have instantly converted an entire country's worth of fans in terms of the legitimacy of the tournament.
Remember the 2016 best on best??.....I don't. But I think I watched most of it. ha!It beats the All-Star game.
I don't think it will have massive historical significance, which was my original point.
People will watch it, cheer, and then move on. Like the 2016 World Cup which no one brings up very often.
As much of this event being a corporate, revenue-generating event, I think it's a true attempt at a compromise between players and NHL team management.I think it still would take place. World Cup 96 of course and for people who understands Swedish. This was for the first change of the game
Canada’s worst forward 5 on 5, excellent 3 on 3 tho lolMarner finally shows up after 60 minutes...... for 3 on 3 non contact. ha!
It is a joke that you can't win more than you have since you have more ice hockey players to choose from.Canada manages to win the World Championships more than anyone else despite only hosting it once in a hundred years.
Try harder I guess.

Hey, they let you out from under the bridge or wherever it is you live when you aren’t trashing Canada.
It wouldn’t be much of a sport if Canada won every tournament. You are welcome.
Oh, don’t worry—I’d never live under a Canadian bridge. Too much whining about how ‘the game belongs to us’ echoing from above. Canada doesn’t win every tournament because hockey needs competition, not a participation trophy for the country that invented it.
Also you are the primary country crying about it not being best-on-best.
Fix your NHL schedule, problem solved.
