Most akin would be the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, held in between best on best olympics in 2002 and 2006. I don't remember there being a ton of buzz to it, but it still happened.

I actually have fond memories of that tournament as I followed it quite closely. But, I'm a bit of a hockey fanatic and a lot of my more casual fan friends didn't take a lot of interest.

It was one of Jagr's best performances in that semi-final game, even though they ended up losing to Lecavalier's OT winner. He was unstoppable, they tried everything to get the puck off his stick and he'd just maintain possession in the zone. I promised myself that I wouldn't forget it.

The best thing for the World Cup would have been if Finland had won it in the Final. It would have instantly converted an entire country's worth of fans in terms of the legitimacy of the tournament.

It's a weird list.. I'll add this one too for consideration.

Burke and Luongo were the goalies.

Swedes with Sundin and Forsberg too!

Kris Draper’s 3-2 short side clapper might be my favourite unexpected goal of all-time. Czechs tied it again ~9 seconds later lol

It beats the All-Star game.

I don't think it will have massive historical significance, which was my original point.

People will watch it, cheer, and then move on. Like the 2016 World Cup which no one brings up very often.
Remember the 2016 best on best??.....I don't. But I think I watched most of it. ha!
Last night's game? Great first period. Average play after that. 3 on 3 non contact gimmick ending.
Lets just say ......Not exactly one for the history books.

I think it still would take place. The NHL wants their own hosted tournament where they get all the revenue. It would not hold a lot of prestige though.
As much of this event being a corporate, revenue-generating event, I think it's a true attempt at a compromise between players and NHL team management.

Players want to represent their country, and they've been clamouring since 2016 for the NHL to allow them to return to the Olympics.
NHL teams, aside from revenue, don't want to accept that their best players could get injured and therefore shorten their careers and return on investment.

Certainly, Bettman's announcement re: 8 team World Cup represents this idea.

World Cup 96 of course and for people who understands Swedish. This was for the first change of the game :D

Lasse Granqvist is the GOAT of play by play guys. I haven’t heard anyone like him. Granted I only know two languages.

No stutters, not a stumble, no corrections. Impeccable. He’s the tech9 of play by play guys.

It is a joke that you can't win more than you have since you have more ice hockey players to choose from.

Hey, they let you out from under the bridge or wherever it is you live when you aren’t trashing Canada.

It wouldn’t be much of a sport if Canada won every tournament. You are welcome.

The 1994 game was competitive, but it wasn’t pros. The skill level didn’t come close to the 96 World Cup game. That was truly a great game, played at a super high level of skill and competitiveness.

Oh, don’t worry—I’d never live under a Canadian bridge. Too much whining about how ‘the game belongs to us’ echoing from above. Canada doesn’t win every tournament because hockey needs competition, not a participation trophy for the country that invented it.

Also you are the primary country crying about it not being best-on-best.
Fix your NHL schedule, problem solved.

Watched all three. Has to he 2025. That game lived up to the billing. 1st, than nearly 8 minutes of 3 on 3 warp speed

These are some really novel and revolutionary comments, I salute you.

Glad you recognize brilliance when you see it. Must be a refreshing change from all the recycled ‘Canada owns hockey’ and 'we have the most gold medals!’ as a coping mechanism.

Yes, facts make for good coping mechanisms in general.

Here, I made up a special medal for you to be employed as your own personal coping mechanism.

Wear it with pride!
